ELI5: Why were early bicycles so weird?

Why did bicycles start off with the penny farthing design? It seems counterintuitive, and the regular modern bicycle design seems to me to make the most sense. Two wheels of equal sizes. Penny farthings look difficult to grasp and work, and you would think engineers would have begun with the simplest design.

ELI5: Why do car manufacturers share certain models and sell each others cars rebranded?

I understand collaboration might help them reduce r&d and production costs. One thing is to share systems like the power train, chassis platforms, etc, But why do they go to the extreme of sharing the whole car and simply change the branding? I'm talking about cars like the Mazda 2=Toyota Yaris=Scion iA or Nissan frontier=Suzuki equator.Seems counterintuitive for dealerships to have to support a vehicle developed by a different OEM. Also seems like it could really hurt or benefit a brand reputation depending on the reliability of the car being shared.

CC do not match the audio?

I am hard of hearing so I tend to have subtitles/cc on whenever I am watching something. I watch a lot of anime, although I normally tend to watch it subbed, so maybe this is the same for other dubs?I began watching the original naruto in English and for the entire first season the cc was fine. But I start on season 2, and the captions are atrociously wrong. It felt more like they were summarizing what the characters were saying instead of actually captioning it. At one point, a character speaks in a very quiet voice and the captions say "Naruto...." when she was clearly whispering a full sentence. I thought maybe the cc and subtitles for the show got mixed up, and switched between them. Not only is that the not case, but the cc do not even follow the Japanese script. (From what I saw)I am just very confused and frustrated and was wondering if anyone else was having this issue? I was really enjoying myself but it's very frustrating to not be able to fully understand what's going on in it.

subtitles are so wrong

i am watching cassandra rn, the miniseries. my first language is spanish but i ALWAYS watch stuff on their native language bc i believe it's better and the actors' voices are part of the performance. so i know very little german –i'm learning–, but then one of the characters said something in english, and the translation had NOTHING to do with it. so i was weirded out, and switched it up to english captions. however, i can feel how sometimes instead of translating they change the whole order of sentences, and what got me mad the most is that in the first episode one of the characters said "merci" and the english captions said "gracias" ???? like what the hell they are two completely different languages.

If everyone can contribute, this means that every person has the privilege to change the code of the app. If this is the case how do they stop contributers from adding harmful codes to the code. My question is only for codes that is intended to harm the project, and it doesn't cover unintentional harms.

TV show recs similar to Supernatural & The Walking Dead?

Anyone have any recommendations for a new show for the hubby and I to binge watch together? We have finished Supernatural and The Walking Dead (I know there’s spinoffs of each I just have mixed feelings starting those tbh). We also really enjoyed Mindhunter but I don’t think that’s coming back. So something similar to that dark / suspenseful vibe probably, but open to hearing what other people have enjoyed!

ELI5: Why do certain regions seem to have a lot harder wood tree species?

In my anecdotal experience as a woodworker I keep noticing something.It appears like a lot of “exotic” hardwood species come from warmer/tropical climates like Southeast Asia, South America or Sub-Saharan Africa. It also seems like Australia is chock full of extremely hard wood species?Is this just a matter of selection bias? I haven’t found a map of Janka hardness overlapped with native tree ranges so I could just be flat out wrong here. Do these regions still have a lot of cheap softer local species that we just don’t see in America or Europe because we only import the fancy hardwoods?If my perception is actually accurate, is there something about these regions like their climate/geography/etc. that leads to evolutionary selection pressures for certain traits?
