Been with Netflix since 11/2012The latest price increase just made me realize it’s not worth it. I have other options and pay for other services now that weren’t available when I signed up with Netflix. Just feel like it’s time to say goodbye I’m sure I won’t miss it. Hell I or my family never really felt like there was anything we had to watch that wasn’t available somewhere else.

ELI5: Why isn't Earth's atmosphere being sucked away by the vacuum of space

If space is still expanding, shouldn't the vacuum of space be increasing as well? And if the vacuum of space does increase, how come it hasn't reached the threshold to overpower Earth's gravity that holds the atmosphere in place?

“Zero Day” Proteus Plot Q

At one point in the series, Valerie tells the Mullen that he should avoid going back home because that may be where the Proteus is being used on him. He sleeps in his office for like one or two nights and then starts going back home again. Did I miss something where they concluded that possible threat no longer existed? 👀I know he found that bug in the bird feeder in the last episode that Valerie had checked out and told him was probably nothing. But that just made me even more confused. 😂

ELI5 How are the chinese languages mutually intelligible in writing only?

i speak 0 chinese languages, obviously it baffles me that while cantonese, mandarin, shanghainese, etc are NOT mutually intelligible when spoken, they are in writing. how can this be? i understand not all chinese characters are pictographs, like mountain, sun, or person, so i cannot imagine how, with non-pictographs like “bright”, meanings just… converge into the same meaning? or what goes on really?

How can you tell if you’ve seen a show on Netflix?

There’s so many true crime shows on different streamers, I don’t know if I’ve seen that particular documentary. Like American Nightmare. I remember watching a documentary on that story, but Netflix has it as new as if I never watched it. But I swore I watched a documentary about the missing woman reappearing etc. Does NF erase bookmarks on the shows I watch, and makes them look like I never watched them? 🤷

The Way Havana Syndrome Was Brought To Life in Zero Day

Tell me it's Havana Syndrome without telling me it's Havana Syndrome was a subtle and brilliant move by Netflix in Zero Day. It was very interesting to see that they dared bring this sensitive topic to life as the US government finally admitted that there is indeed such a thing and it's officially referred to as anomalous health incidents (AHI).To the naked eye, viewers who aren't really in the know would see the symptoms as something related to more exposed mental issues such as Dementia, Alzheimers or even Schizophrenia. Netflix did a great job there. The alternative of directly confirming that it was Havana Syndrome would have been terrifying for inquiring minds. Leaving the culprit to the viewers's interpretation was mindful. The thought of goverments having the capability to remotely mess with people's brains is best left in the Sci-Fi, Horror or Dystopian genres. In general Zero Day and the topics discussed are beyond most people's comprehension of possibilities and capabilities meeting real-life. There were obvious political points that distract viewers from the overall themes given our current political climate. This will obviously lead to negative reviews from those who are too passionate about their political affiliations to see the series as anything other that political propaganda pushing conspiracy theories. A risk that Netflix willingly took for the greater good?There were some things that were the product of a bit of research and imagination. Other things were clear political warnings of the IFs.In the end, I sincerely wondered who the real consultants for Zero Day were. Some things in Zero Day were too real for comfort.

ELI5: Why didn't modern armies employ substantial numbers of snipers to cover infantry charges?

I understand training an expert - or competent - sniper is not an easy thing to do, especially in large scale conflicts, however, we often see in media long charges of infantry against opposing infantry.What prevented say, the US army in Vietnam or the British army forces in France from using an overwhelming sniper force, say 30-50 snipers who could take out opposing firepower but also utilised to protect their infantry as they went 'over the top'.I admit I've seen a lot of war films and I know there is a good bunch of reasons for this, but let's hear them.

But how do we know that? How did scientists detect that there is much more out there? As well as I remember, humanity has only been able to go to some planets and places in the universe. How do scientists then do the math resulting from these observations?

What's the definable difference between a member of one caste and another? And if there is no noticeable difference, how did people tell which caste to put somebody in to begin with?

I remember that for chess and other humanities subjects , I often did well but completely flopped in the STEM subjects.Then there were some that were able to soak up everything they learnt in class like a sponge. So as the question suggests, what's the main reason for people being talented in certain areas. Is it more of physchological thing or how our brains are wired or something else entirely?

There is word going around that no one should buy anything on February 28, 2025, in protest of all the awfulness going on in the US right now. I just saw a meme saying, "If you need something, buy it today. Tomorrow we boycott!" While I would love to hit the oligarchs in the pocketbook where it hurts (and I try not to buy anything most days), I feel like this just gives people a false sense of accomplishment. I have seen these one-day boycotts happen several times in the past, and I just don't understand the point.
