YSK you usually do not need to replace all 3 AAA batteries
At /r/YouShouldKnow
Why YSK: Devices that use 3 AAA batteries, like a small flashlight, do not always drain them evenly. Often 1 battery is drained and the other 2 are just fine, but people replace all 3 because they don't have a battery tester to know which is the bad one.

ELI5: Why do credit card charges get applied almost instantly, but refunds take weeks/months?
At /r/explainlikeimfive
From a technology perspective, why do credit card charges get applied almost instantly, but refunds take weeks/months? It's almost too convenient for the businesses huh? There are many instances where I refunded something at a store like Costco (yes even reputable businesses like Costco) or Walmart, and I never actually got the refund on my credit card. Most people probably don't even check their credit card statement on that closely, even less people will probably even remember the refund, so these businesses are basically stealing your money indirectly. In the last year I've already ran into this three times only because I'm one of the few people who read over every single transaction in my credit card statement and compare with receipts. But heaven forbid if you bought something but that charge didn't go through, never going to happen in a million years. It's like the APIs they're using for charges is top tier while the APIs they're using for refunds was programmed by a capybara.

ELI5: Just watched a video on Deepwater Horizion. Can anyone tell me why the firefighting ships use water on an oil fire??
At /r/explainlikeimfive
So since I cant post pictures or video you'll have to look it up but since it was such a large event I'm pretty sure most people have seen the pictures and videos by now.But as I was watching a video about Deepwater horizion I noticed in the footage all of the rescue ships are using water to try and put out the blaze. Now If I'm not mistaken, isnt putting water on an oil fire a bad thing? or are they mixing chemicals into the water?Explain it like I'm 5 lol

Gabby Petito Doc and the prevalence of DV
At /r/netflix
I wasn't going to watch it just because I feel that there's an oversaturation of true crime docs out there, many of which are made irresponsibly or with little regard for the victim(s), so I felt neutral-meh at first. Then I decided to throw on the documentary anyway and I'm really glad I did because we need to talk about intimate partner violence more.I remember when the case first came to light before her remains were found and I was sad for everyone, but I also thought to myself, gosh missing white woman syndrome in full swing again, OF COURSE the media is jumping on this when there are other missing people whose cases are in need of publicity too-- but the thing is, DV needs to be discussed and I'm glad this documentary came out so we can continue this discussion. Younger generations like Gabby grew up with the internet-- and the notion of presenting their lives in a carefully curated way, cutting out the stuff they don't want on the socials is like a reflex at this point. And it can make us forget that we do not know what happens behind closed doors. People don't talk openly enough about DV. Years ago, I started reading Justine Van Leun's piece on Nikki Addimando ("The Evidence Against Her") and the line that always stuck with me was, "The only good domestic violence victim is a dead one." Reflecting on the doc made me realize how prevalent DV is, but that we don't know about it usually until it has escalated like with Gabby. A few years ago, a high school acquaintance of mine was killed by her boyfriend in a murder-suicide. She was in the middle of her residency in Family Medicine in Utah. No one had any idea her boyfriend was an abuser. You can't know what happens inside a relationship. Poor Gabby and her family. What a fucking tragedy. Such a senseless murder. And fuck the Landries. There was DV in my house when I was a child and I remember the lengths my grandparents took to shield their son and blame my mother(!!) and I was seething with rage on behalf of Gabby and her family. How dare they. And it shatters my heart when I think about women like Gabby (and Nikki, my high school classmate, and the many other victims, including my mom). Gabby behaved like a classic DV victim-- downplayed Brian's actions and blamed herself as an instigator-- he had her completely under his manipulative thumb that she couldn't bring herself to tell the cops that yes, the bruises were made by him, yes, he had put his hands on her. Gabby was so young. I appreciate that the documentary made her a 3-dimensional person-- not just a van-life influencer. She seemed very spirited and kind, and honestly-- I think she would've been a great documentarian. Call it in if you see someone fighting with their partner. Keep an eye out for your friends if their partner is isolating them from their loved ones. Also, not actually related, but aside from the LE officers who utterly failed Gabby, FBI agent Loretta Bush seemed like a total badass.

Every show I like gets cancelled
At /r/netflix
Title. It’s seriously unbelievable how many shows get cancelled after their first season. For me, the first big hit was Marco Polo. So good. It got cancelled on a cliff hanger. Its high production cost was cited. Fine, I guess. 1899- had me hooked in the first few minutes. Cancelled. Archive 81- 8 episodes. The first one was slow to get through, granted, but by the end it was easily one of my favorite horror/suspense shows. CANCELLED. And it’s certainly not the production costs since very little special effects were used. There were more shows that got canceled, obviously, but these were the three that really got to me. Seriously considering cancelling Netflix now since all they seem to care about is producing trash. “New on netflix” flair because it’s ironically relevant.

YSK: If your medication gives you lots of sideeffects, ask for a Cytochrome p450 Genetic Test
At /r/YouShouldKnow
So you may know that your liver is responsible for breaking down lots of toxins as well as medications we take, but did you know that one of the enzyme families that do this vary a lot in effectiveness from person to person? Basically, depending on your own personal genetic makeup you may metabolize drugs way faster or slower than other people, and this can lead to a lot of variation from person to person in terms of effectiveness and sideeffects and so on.This goes for a bunch of different medications like antidepressants, painkillers, statins (against high cholesterol) and many more. Your doctor can actually do a genetic test on you (blood sample) to see which specific version of these genes you have so they can figure out which medication works best for you!Why YSK: This can have a big impact on what medication works best for you and in my experience doctors very rarely test for it unless they suspect anything.
