ELI5: If we are always surrounded by germs, how come we only get sick a couple of times a year?

A lot of viruses and bacteria can survive days and weeks on surfaces, we are exposed to hundreds of sneezes and coughs from the people around us every day, our phones are apparently dirtier than toilet bowls and we eat food prepared by others in not necessarily germ-free conditions. How come most of us just get sick just a couple of times a year if we have probably been exposed to the same germ numerous times in the days, weeks and months leading up to the sickness?

Why YSK: It's snowball effect that you should check and always prevent it in your pet, if the bloating continues to escalate into GDV (Gastric dilation and volvulus) it will be life threatening for your pets, Every pet owner should know or be reminded always about this , my pet has gone to better place early due to my carelessness I thought she was just full and tired, I still can't stop my tears flowing whenever I remember carrying her to vet shivering and suffering from bloating, I wish there would be more helpful guides that removes bloating for dogs in the internet so that people that can't afford vet can be saved and not be drowned in guilt of not saving them.

Or rather backwards incompatibility. With the Switch 2 being officially announced I became curious about how a game system could not have backwards compatibility. I don't really understand computers or how a game system works but to me they are basically just computers that run on their own OS. My understanding of a new console is that they basically just add a better processor and up the graphics or whatever and put it out, so why would a game developed for the previous system not work on a newer system?

The 8 Show

Minor spoilers ahead!! I'm pissed at the reaction to thos show; it feels like a lot of people hate on it because they think it's piggybacking off of Squid Game, and I really don't feel that way. Squid Game was cool but it didn't really have substance to me, it felt like a game for the most part, it felt like that's what the showrunners treated it as. But The 8 Show, I believe, has such a fucking fantastic message that ot portrays so beautifully. I think the cruelty of 8th Floor and 6th actually shows you what it's like being in the shoes of someone poor going up against someone rich. I think 4th floor and 5th floor being 'slaves' to the upper floors, and, somewhat by choice, not helping the lower floors is also fucking spot on. The lower floors stick together -- except one of them really needs the money, and will do anything to get it, including hurting the people around them. I was bothered by some plot holes, but i can explain things like 2nd locking them all up by... Well, they didn't want more time, but now that they have it... And 5th being naive and delusional makes sense, too, to me at least. Lots of whacky shit, but it's so raw and intense that I think it did its job well. And with the ending, I think it tied things up well. I did NOT like the games, I did NOT like the brutality, as a matter of fact I was so disturbed i cried at some parts and the only reason i didn't skip things was cuz i didn't wanna miss story, or miss the emotions that came from things like 3 fucking HOME RUNNING 1'S HEAD. Chills.It's not for everyone. But I've been poor all my life, and i have had a lot of friends and family in different places. All the different systems of hierarchy and power that are put in place is what gets people killed. As an anarchist and anti-capitalist, the message resonated with me, not manhy shows or movies I've seen capture just how genuinely brutal and uncaring the systems are while somehow making sure to keep every character somewhat empathetic or understandable. Except 8. Fuck 8. Great show, the hate is undeserved, i don't think it's really about the story so much as what it's trying to tell you.

ELI5 - Why don't gun dogs need hearing protection?

Saw a few videos of people at bird shoots (UK) and they use the dogs to fetch downed birds.I'm lead to believe that dogs hearing is better than a humans, so why don't they have some form of hearing protection? Is it just something that's ignored or are do dogs ears work differently?

YSK, hospitals all across the US, don’t want to call you patients anymore, you are customers now.

I wish there was someway to make people more aware of this. In training, textbooks, new policy, internal documents, ect, hospitals are pushing to replace “patients”, with “customers”. Or “clients” at best. When I first received my medical training, some years ago, I had never heard of this. Now it’s all over everything. Learning materials, education stuff, internal policy, you name it. Why YSK: This seemingly small change represents the direction healthcare in the US is continuing to head in. When you are ill, when you need care to save or heal your body, you don’t have a right to help. You are not a patient, you are just a customer, and customers must pay. In the US, your health is not a right. The most basic things needed to live your longest life (with teeth), are for sale. And if you cannot purchase, go die or waste away. *im furious about this and refuse to use the word in any of my practice. Wonder how long that will last.

ELI5: Why does a round pipe flow better than an oval or rounded rectangle with an identical cross-sectional area?

Designing an exhaust system but I'm running into a clearance issue that oval pipe would solve, but everything thing I've read states that oval pipe has lower flow and higher pressure at the same velocity.Why? If the area is the same shouldn't flow rate be the same? It's not like a square which has corners that cause turbulence and drag.
