🇷🇺Rules for determining if a noun is masculine or feminine

1. Look at the last letter of the word:
2. If it is a consonant, or “й”, the word is masculine.
3. If it is “а” or “я” it is feminine.
4. If it is “о” or “е” it is neuter.
5. If it is a soft sign “ь” then it could be either masculine or feminine. (relative to the above four, this doesn't happen to often)

There are very few exceptions to these rules, but there are five notable ones which occur mainly because of physical gender.

▪️ Папа – (Daddy, Papa) – Is Masculine
▪️ Дядя – (Uncle) – Is Masculine
▪️ Дедушка – (Grandfather) – Is Masculine
▪️ Мужчина – (Man) – Is Masculine
▪️ Кофе – (Coffee) – Is Masculine

📢 How to pronounce the Russian letter Ы

This vowel does not have an equivalent in English.

If you want to hear the ы sound in an English word see on the words milk or city.

So, in other words, when you say see, you smile. When you say city, you don't. This is the easiest way to explain difference between ы and и.

Explaining the mimics—just try to push your lower jaw forward as much as possible when you try to say ы.

🔊 The hard sign (Ъ) and the soft sign (Ь)

the hard sign – Ъ ъ (твёрдый знак) [tvyórdy znak]
the soft sign – Ь ь (мягкий знак) [myáhkii znak]

What do they do?

The hard sign makes the preceding consonant sound harder. The soft sing makes it softer. In transcriptions, we mark with ' the soft consonants and with ” the hard ones. For example:

мать mat' – mother

съесть s”est' – to eat

🔊 What should you do when you come across new words?

When you are reading something in English, don't look up every new word or expression or you will soon get fed up. Only look up something that is really important for understanding the text. When you have finished reading, look back at what you have read and then perhaps look up some extra words and write down new expressions that interest you.

Similarly when you listen to English don't panic when you hear some new words or expressions that you don't know. Keep listening and the overall meaning will often become clear.

When you read or listen to English it is sometimes possible to guess the meaning of a word you don't know before you look up or ask its meaning. Decide first what part of speech the word is and then look for clues in its context or form.

💬 Russian Spelling Rules

Here are the so called Russian spelling rules. They are just used to make pronunciation of a word clean when soft consonants might make this difficult. Generally, you will notice that the consonants these rules apply to are the consonants that don't exist in English.

▪️Spelling Rule 1: Ы - И
Never write the letter "Ы" after the letters 'Г, К, Х, Ж, Ч, Ш, Щ' instead use "И"

▪️Spelling Rule 2: unstressed O - E
Never write an unstressed "O" after the letters 'Ж, Ч, Ш, Щ, Ц' instead use "E"

▪️Spelling Rule 3: Я - А
Never write the letter "Я" after the letters 'Г, К, Х, Ж, Ч, Ш, Щ, Ц' instead use "А"

▪️Spelling Rule 4: Ю - У
Never write the letter "Ю" after the letters 'Г, К, Х, Ж, Ч, Ш, Щ, Ц' instead use "У"

✌️ Hi guys,

I know that this channel should contain more info to help you to learn Russian.
Sorry for that. I'm trying to figure out what material to publish here.

Only rules and vocabulary are boring for you so I have an idea to add books in Russian, movies, tv-shows, music, facts about Russian-speaking countries and so on

🙄 Do you like the idea?

Spelling rules

Remember! There are two important spelling rules in Russian:

1. Never write ы, ю, я after г, к, х, ж, ч, ш, щ; instead write и, у, а.
2. Never write an unstressed о after ж, ч, ш, щ, ц

I order to apply Rule 2 accurately, it is important to know which syllable of a word is stressed. Unfortunately, there is no foolproof way of knowing where a word is stressed... other than to make a point of learning where the stress is when you first come across the word!

🍽 On the Menu

If you were in a Russian bar or café, here are some words you might see on the menu:

Меню - Menu
Кофе - Coffee
Чай - Tea
Молоко - Milk
Кока-Кола - Coca-Cola
Лимонад - Lemonade
Сок - Juice
Борщ - Russian beetroot soup
Суп - Soup
Торт - Cake
Водка - Vodka
Пиво - Beer
Вино - Wine
Вода - Water
минералка с газом - Mineral water (with gas)
минералка без газа - Mineral water (without gas)

When you ask for water is a bar it's best to ask for mineral water (минералка). If you simply ask for water (вода), it will sound like you are asking for tap water, which is not normal in Russia. When you ask for mineral water you should specify if you want it still or sparkling (с газом/без газа). Be careful, when you order vodka in Russia, you will generally get straight vodka.

🇷🇺Russian is almost phonetic language, because you pronounce all of the letters in the word.

🔻The word ‘молоко’ – 6 letters, 6 sounds.
Therefore, if you know pronunciation rules, you can read any Russian word.

🇬🇧It’s not like in English.
🔹For example in the word ‘thought’ there are 7 letters and only 3 sounds.

When Russians learn English, they learn words together with transcription (pronunciation)

🔻There are some exceptions though: in the word ‘здравствуйте’ the middle ‘в’ is not pronounced.
