Experts have long known the risks of charging a smartphone using a USB cord that can also transfer data. But a new research shows that even without data wires, hackers using a "side channel" can quickly find out what websites a user has visited while charging a device. Researchers warn that a malicious charging station can use seemingly unrelated data -such as a device's power consumption -to extract sensitive information. Be very careful before charging your phone at a public place. It is a better alternative to carry a power bank instead.

Concerns have been raised about social media misuse as fake news, morphed photographs and disturbing videos with fabricated local narratives can easily be circulated that can trigger tension and even communal rift in an area. To curb this, such a rule is being implemented.

Here’s how it works – victims receive a text message purporting to be from their banks, advising them that new direct debits have been set up. The messages ask victims to contact the bank on a number provided if these haven’t been authorized. When the victim contacts the ‘bank’ on that number, personal details are asked on the pretext of verification. Fraudsters then take control of the account and send payments.
In case you receive such a message, don’t ignore it (it may be a genuine message from your bank). Instead, do this - always call your bank using a number from a bank statement or a verified source, not a text message, and seek clarification.

All accounts opened from July 2014 to August 2015 will have to submit Know Your Customer (KYC) details and their Aadhaar number to banks and financial institutions by 30th April, and self-certify them to comply with FATCA regulations (Foreign Tax Compliance Act). In case the account holders are unable to furnish details and provide self-certification by the new deadline, banks and financial institutions have the option of blocking the accounts.
Those struggling to link their Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar because of their names being differently spelt on the cards can now simply upload a scanned copy of their PAN to get their work done. The income tax department plans to introduce an option on the e-filing portal, through which a taxpayer can link their Aadhaar without changing the name by opting for a One-Time Password (OTP), provided the person's year of birth matches in both documents.
FYI - Over 1.08 crore assessees have already Aadhaar-linked PAN, but the number is abysmally low, as there are over 25 crore PAN cardholders in the country, while Aadhaar has been issued to 111 crore people.
Indian cities are already among those with the poorest air quality in the world. Upgrading to stricter fuel standards is nothing short of an absolute necessity, and in this regard, only vehicles who comply with BS-IV norms (which set limits for release of air pollutants by vehicles) have been permitted to be sold from April onwards. While this is a nightmare for automobile manufacturers and dealers (because of large stocks of non-compliant vehicles), we salute this man who #DaresToBeDifferent :
"We don't inherit the world from our ancestors. We borrow the world from our children. Its not easy to take a stand different from peers. But we felt a deep compulsion to do so for our friends, the children of our friends and the friends of our children."

If you are an Android user - BEWARE!
Android apps are mining smartphone users' data by secretly colluding with each other. Apps can trade information, a capability that can lead to serious consequences in terms of security. It is common information that types of app fall into two major categories: malware apps specifically designed to launch a cyberattack; and apps that simply allow for collusion and privilege escalation. What is shocking is that the biggest security risks come from some of the least capable apps. So before keying in any information on your phone - be careful!

You’ll tell them you didn’t order them, and they’ll say “oops, that was another table!” They will say okay, let’s subtract that amount of the wrongly added dish. The scam is the service charge of 15% and luxury charge of at least 10% which is charged on the first and higher amount, and which they don’t cancel. To avoid this wrongdoing, make sure they make you a new bill with only the dishes you have actually ordered.

The popularity of online dating sites is only increasing with each passing day. Many have found their life partners via them, but, many more are being conned too. Welcome to the era of ‘romance scams’.
In a typical scam, the fraudster identifies potential victims through a dating site. He then tailors his personality to suit what the victim is looking for. Questions are asked of the woman so that the fraudster can ascertain how much money the woman has and whether it is worth pursuing. He will then aim to continue the relationship via Skype or email. This is an attempt to isolate the victim. The scammer will say he is working abroad and wants to meet the victim. But there will be something stopping him, such as a hospital visit. After coaxing the victim offline, the typical fraudster will ask for money after a couple of weeks, initially for small amounts, and more money will be requested thereafter. Once the money is transferred, he will vanish.
Here’s what you should do - do not transfer any money until you have met the person, and are sure of him, and always, always, click pictures of the person you meet via the internet, so that if something does go wrong, it is easier identify the fraudster.

Читать полностью…You answer the phone and the person on the other end says, “can you hear me?”, or “am I speaking to Mr. so-and-so?”. Seems harmless, right? Well, beware – this is the new ‘phone scam’! The idea of this phone scam is aimed at getting people who answer the call to say the word “yes”. It may not seem like a big deal at the time, but it's what the criminals can do later with that recording that's dangerous to you, your information and your identity. You say “yes”, it gets recorded and they say that you have agreed to something. Once they have a recording on file of your voice saying “yes”, scammers then use it to authorize unwanted charges on bills, credit cards and more. Some companies also use it to activate expensive plans under your name and falsely received consent in the form of “yes”.
