In order to curb lifestyle diseases in the country, such as diabetes and obesity, the government is planning to increase taxes on harmful products such as cigarettes and sugar sweetened drinks such as Coke and Pepsi. The extra money collected by the government due to this will be used for various government spendings for improving health of the nation. Various measures will also be put in place to ban sale of such products in or near schools across the country.

If you deal with Citi Bank - here is some good news for you! Citi India is set to end the long and painful authentication process during phone banking, and replace it with a simple and short voice verification (voice biometrics). This would bring down the authentication completion time from an average 45 seconds to a maximum of 15 seconds, saving around 100,000 customer hours annually.
This is how it will work - customers can enrol to record their voice prints during normal conversation. During a call, the system will capture the voice track, accent and voice modulation. Each voice print is as distinct as a fingerprint, and it will be uniquely tagged and stored in the database. After it is tagged, the next time the customer calls, the system will immediately tell the phone officer whether the person is indeed the account holder.

In an attempt to boost tourism, and to bring to peoples' attention the hardwork done by miners, the government has launched a new adventure - you can now descend into a coalmine 500 metres below the surface near Nagpur to learn about fantastic machines (and to experience the hardships of miners). Two mines of Western Coalfields Limited--both active with their coal feeding power plants--about an hour's journey from Nagpur have been thrown open to the public by the state tourism authority - MTDC. This 'mine-tourism' - is the first of its kind in India.

Mumbai born Ashley Tellis could be the next US ambassador to India. Dr Tellis, a former White House official and renowned India expert, completed his bachelor's and master's degrees in economics from the St Xavier's College in South Mumbai before going to the US for further studies. After leaving Mumbai, the 55-year-old Indian-American policy wonk completed his PhD from the University of Chicago and went to hold important positions. Dr Tellis is currently a Senior Fellow, South Asia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a Washington-based influential think-tank. If appointed the next US Ambassador to New Delhi under the upcoming Donald Trump administration, Mr Tellis would replace Richard Verma, who was named to the post by outgoing President Barack Obama in 2015. Mr Verma will depart as US Ambassador to India on January 20.
