Assa approached slowly, the anger he had felt toward Rodney now gone. “Maybe you should’ve let me hit him,” he said, his gaze fixed on the horizon as Moroni stood still beside him.
“Yeah, maybe,” Moroni replied, still motionless, the wind stirring his mane.
Assa’s expression shifted slightly from surprise to irritation. “Why didn’t you tell them about the kiss?”
“I was going to,” Moroni’s voice was low, almost breaking. “But I couldn’t.” He lowered his head.
Assa turned completely to look up at him. From his angle, he could only see half of Moroni’s face, obscured by his thick mane, which, despite the wind, hid his downcast eyes. “Why?”
“He was here, alone, drinking. Nothing guarantees that he’ll change the path he’s on. In high school, I had a classmate like that. But Rodney... it seems like he’s already fighting something deeper, something he might not fully understand on his own. And I don’t know if there’s anyone giving him even a little help.” Moroni took a deep breath, adjusted his mane, and started walking.
Assa stood still for a moment, briefly reflecting on what Moroni had said. “So, Rodney is...”
“A boy your age with more questions than answers. Maybe Patrick saw that before we did—he seemed very calm about it,” Moroni said, now questioning the situation after meeting the kangaroo.
“He came home bruised,” Assa interrupted, walking to keep pace with Moroni.
“I’m not saying it’s okay to normalize those kinds of problems. I just think... maybe Patrick empathized with him at some point and decided to let it go. I don’t know,” Moroni concluded.
Assa continued walking beside him, matching his pace. “Yeah, his mind is strange...”
When they arrived home, Patrick was asleep in one of the rooms. He had dusted off his fur, and his face radiated a deep sense of peace. Assa and Moroni exchanged glances for a brief moment and silently promised each other never to speak of what had happened that afternoon.

Rodney struggled to free himself from Moroni's grip, even managing to elbow him in an attempt to inflict some damage. However, the lion’s hold was strong, though not entirely steady; his hand trembled as Rodney kept trying to pull away.
"I'm glad you're here," Moroni said, his sharp voice momentarily dropping into a low, grave tone, anger flickering in his gaze.
Rodney turned his eyes in the same direction as Moroni’s and noticed two uniformed officers standing nearby. His ears drooped, and he grumbled in frustration, resignation etched on his face.
"This kid has been selling alcohol, both at his school and, apparently, to minors as well," Moroni said.
Hearing these words, Rodney resumed his struggle to break free. "That’s not true!"
"Officer, the boy reeks of alcohol. Not only is he drunk, but he intercepted one of my sons and struck him after he refused to buy whatever he was selling from that bag over there," Moroni added.
"Sir, please release the young man. We’ll handle this calmly," one of the officers said.
Rodney straightened up as soon as Moroni let go, adjusting his shirt and brushing himself off. "I’m not doing anything," he mumbled, though it was clear he could barely stand without swaying.
As the conversation unfolded, Moroni testified about the alleged sales—a story he knew full well wasn’t true. Yet, he backed it up with a couple of photos he had taken of Patrick while they were eating. Meanwhile, one of the officers listened to Rodney’s account, which was vague and filled with gaps that Moroni’s narrative seemed to conveniently fill. When the officers inspected the bag, they found a few more bottles of beer, casting doubt on Rodney’s claim that the lion had handed him the backpack.
"Sir, this is a serious matter. We’re looking at underage alcohol sales, public intoxication, and the condition he’s in means we’ll have to take him in. However, if you wish to file a complaint, it would be crucial for your son to provide his version of events," the officer explained.
Moroni sighed lightly, feeling a flicker of concern despite how far the situation had already escalated. For a moment, he glanced into the depths of the alley and spotted Assa still hiding in the shadows. "Look, my son didn’t even feel the need to do anything. Apparently, they’ve known each other for some time, so I’m not interested in filing a complaint," Moroni replied.
"Even so, we’ll need to contact his family. We’ll have to take him with us in the meantime," the officer replied.
The second officer, who had been speaking with Rodney, approached and mentioned a key part of Rodney’s story—that Moroni had handed him the bag—which caused the first officer to hesitate and cast a doubtful look at the lion.
Guiding Moroni closer to Rodney, the officers waited for a response to the kangaroo’s claim. Moroni, meanwhile, searched his phone for a conversation.
Rodney: "Well, yeah, I sell stuff..."
Moroni: "Drugs?"
Rodney: "No! It’s other things that help me get by... Never mind, it’s just stuff I sell at school, homework and other things."
The back-and-forth continued for a few moments, but much of Rodney’s alibi began to crumble. Though he was being truthful about parts of his story, his inconsistent versions—likely influenced by the alcohol—only reinforced trust in Moroni’s testimony.
Rodney was placed in the patrol car. Although he sat silently, frustration was evident in his expression. One of the officers wrapped up a brief conversation with Moroni. "He will be okay?" Moroni asked.
"Yes, there’s not much we can do for now. We’ll ensure he gets some attention while we try to obtain his parents’ contact information. At the moment, he’s refusing to say anything else, but we already have his details. Usually, cases like this don’t go far, but we’ll make sure the boy gets home safely," the officer assured him before climbing into the patrol car and driving off.
Moroni remained standing on the sidewalk, the sun still high in the sky, but his expression betrayed a mix of doubt, perhaps fear, or even regret.
