🇸🇴🇪🇸 Spanish warship rushes in to investigate suspected pirate attack off Somalia

A Spanish navy ship is sailing towards a Maltese-flagged commercial vessel that may have been hijacked by pirates off Somalia, the European Union's Somali counter piracy force said.

If confirmed, it would be the first successful hijacking involving Somali pirates since 2017 when a crackdown by international navies stopped a rash of seizures in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.

EUNAVFOR's joint operations centre in Spain said it received an alert on Thursday about the "alleged pirate-hijacked vessel" Ruen, which was approximately 500 nautical miles east of Socotra Island.

EUNAVFOR said the Spanish warship Victoria had been sent to the scene "in order to gather more information and evaluate further actions".

🇺🇬🇲🇲 Uganda trying to rescue 22 trafficked nationals held in Myanmar

At least 22 Ugandans are being held captive in Myanmar after being trafficked there for forced work, according to the Ugandan internal affairs ministry.

The Ugandan government says it is trying to rescue the 17 men and five women who were recruited by “local leaders” in the suburbs of the capital, Kampala.

The victims, who are believed to be aged between 22 and 30, reportedly thought they were being recruited to be employed in supermarkets in Thailand and to do other casual or domestic work.

Interpol said reports have been received from Ugandan law enforcement of several citizens being taken to Dubai for employment before being diverted to Thailand and then to Myanmar.

💰🇳🇬 World Bank to provide $750 mln for clean energy projects in Nigeria

The World Bank's fund for poor countries plans to provide a credit of $750 million for clean energy projects in Nigeria to increase the electricity.

The bank said that more than 85 million people lacked access to electricity in Nigeria as of 2021, with households and businesses reliant on expensive diesel and petrol generators.

It said the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up project will be financed by the International Development Association credit and provide access to new or improved electricity supplies to more than 17.5 million Nigerians.

It added that the project will leverage parallel financing of $100 million from the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet and $200 million from Japan's International Cooperation Agency in addition to over $1 billion of private capital.

🇿🇲 Zambian ex-president challenges withdrawal of benefits

Zambia's former President Edgar Lungu has gone to court to challenge the withdrawal of his retirement benefits.

Last month, Lungu was stripped of his retirement benefits and privileges following his decision to return to active politics.

His office was reportedly closed, staff and security deployed and the vehicles he had been given by the government withdrawn.

Lungu described the government's decision as an infringement of his fundamental rights.

Lungu says that other individuals who had held high public offices and retired were not subjected to such restrictions.

However, the country's Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha dismissed Lungu's plea, saying reinstating his benefits while he was actively engaged in politics would be contrary to the law.

🇸🇩 Sudan's RSF advances on Wad Madani as eight-month-old war spreads

Sudan's army was trying to hold off attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Friday near Wad Madani, a major city that had been sheltered from fighting and taken in hundreds of thousands of civilians during eight months of war.

Clashes in the area, about 170 km southeast of Khartoum, threaten to open a new front.

A takeover of densely populated Wad Madani, where some government and aid services have relocated, would likely trigger massive displacement and deepen a humanitarian crisis.

The RSF, a paramilitary force that has recently gained momentum with takeovers of major cities, said that it was seeking to destroy army strongholds and that citizens in Wad Madani and surrounding El Gezira state should be reassured.

🇸🇴 Ship hijacked off Somali coast, maritime organisation said

There are reports that a commercial ship has been hijacked off the coast of Somalia.

Britain's Maritime Trade Operation reported that the crew was no longer in control of the vessel, which was heading towards the Somali coast and was almost 700 nautical miles east of Bosaso.

It is not yet clear if this was an attack by Somali pirates or if it was carried out by Houthi rebels from Yemen.

The Houthi rebels have been attacking vessels in Red Sea shipping lanes in a campaign they say aims to support the Palestinians.

🇰🇪🇸🇦 Kenya secures 2,500 jobs in Saudi Arabia said the president

Kenya has reached an agreement to send workers to Saudi Arabia, the country's President William Ruto says.

Under the deal nurses and other skilled workers will go to the Middle Eastern country from Kenya, with 2,500 workers planned for the first deployment.

"Previously, we only sent domestic workers, but now we can export skilled labour to Saudi Arabia and other countries," President Ruto said, adding that the workers will receive a monthly salary of 200,000 Kenyan shillings ($1,300).

Ruto says he has been canvassing the world for employment opportunities for Kenyans, whom he said are globally renowned for their hard work.

Ruto has previously said that he wants more Kenyans to find work abroad to ease country's unemployment crisis and send back money to help with Kenya's dwindling foreign exchange reserves

🇳🇪 West Africa court orders reinstatement of ousted Niger leader Bazoum

A West African court ruled on Friday that the ousted president of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, and his family were arbitrarily detained and called for a return to democratic rule through his reinstatement.

The Niger coup was widely condemned, led to sanctions from the ECOWAS, and prompted widespread calls for Bazoum's release and his return to rule. Bazoum and his family referred their case to the ECOWAS Court of Justice in September.

Ecowas also has finally suspended Niger's membership after the ruling military junta refused to reinstate deposed Bazoum.

Another attempt by ECOWAS to gain a better bargaining position with Niger, nothing more. Especially considering the Bazoum was abandoned by France and the US.

🇨🇩 The opposition figure announces alliance M23 rebels to create political platform in DR Congo

A Congolese opposition figure, living in exile, on Friday announced the creation of a political-military "Alliance Fleuve Congo" with M23 rebels and other armed groups in order to "save the country". At the helm is Corneille Nangaa, the former chairman of the Electoral Commission.

The announcement was held in Nairobi, Kenya. The M23 "president" Bertrand Bisimwa also attended it.

Corneille Nangaa has announced that his platform currently comprises 17 political parties, two political groupings and several armed groups.

According to Nangaa, the aim of the "Alliance Fleuve Congo" is to "save the DRC", to re-establish its sovereignty and put an end to insecurity.

Since going into exile in recent months, Corneille Nangaa has continued to lash out at Félix Tshisekedi, whose victory in the December 2018 presidential election he had declared.
