🇷🇼 UK initiates detention of migrants ahead of deportation to Rwanda

The United Kingdom has commenced the detention of migrants as part of preparations to relocate them to Rwanda within the next nine to 11 weeks, as announced by the government on Wednesday (May 1st).

This marks a significant step in Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's immigration strategy. Officers were observed entering homes and escorting individuals in handcuffs to secure vans in undisclosed locations. Operational teams within the Home Office are working swiftly to detain individuals slated for relocation, with further activity planned in the coming weeks. The first deportation flights, slated for early July, are a cornerstone of Sunak's immigration policy, aiming to deter risky Channel crossings.

Despite government assurances, human rights organizations anticipate legal challenges to prevent the flights, citing concerns over the welfare of migrants.

🇹🇩 US plans talks with Chad to reevaluate troop presence

The US military intends to resume discussions with Chad within a month regarding the revision of an agreement permitting the presence of troops in the country, a senior American general announced on Wednesday.

Last month, the US announced the withdrawal of most of its 100-strong troop contingent from Chad, prompting concerns over the future of security operations in the Sahel region. Despite this temporary withdrawal, Chad has expressed interest in maintaining a security partnership, particularly in combating terrorism.

The decision to withdraw troops temporarily coincides with Chad's upcoming presidential election, with analysts predicting the incumbent's victory. The US reassures its commitment to security cooperation in the region, with Chad and Niger playing pivotal roles in counterterrorism efforts.

Rwanda: Civil servants mount court challenge over new law

The Rwanda scheme was turned into law. It is:
1) Hopelessly complicated
2) Ridiculously expensive
3) Pathetically underwhelming in terms of numbers of migrants to deport compared to the numbers arriving

And it is also clear that it was done against the wishes of large swathes of those civil servants who will need to implement it.

To the amazement of absolutely no one (except perhaps Mr Sunak), it is unsatisfactory for both sides of the issue. For some it doesn't seriously deal with the issue, for others it is a human rights nightmare.

And anyone with more than 2 functioning brain cells knows that it was put together in desperation. "WE NEED TO BE SEEN TO DO SOMETHING... ANYTHING...".

And that is where we are now.

➡️ Too expensive? Well, let's add untold court costs to the mess.

➡️ Unwieldy design? Add in that many of the civil servants will drag their feet. And likely more so, given the courts' involvement.

➡️ Low numbers? Incredibly, they are unable to locate most of the migrants targeted for deportation. Therefore if it even truly gets off the ground, it can be expected that the programme won't achieve even the low numbers it was aiming for.

Oliver Hardy: "Another fine mess..."

🇲🇱 Escalating humanitarian crisis grips northeastern Mali as armed groups besiege major towns

In northeastern Mali, a humanitarian crisis intensifies as armed groups with ties to the Islamic State lay siege to key towns, leaving around 80,000 children at risk of malnutrition, according to locals and aid organizations.

Ménaka, under siege for four months, faces soaring food prices and a scarcity of essential goods like medicine. The deteriorating situation has trapped thousands of children in dire conditions, prompting urgent calls for action.

Despite promises from Malian leaders to combat the armed groups, the government's control has diminished, exacerbating the crisis. The ongoing political turmoil further complicates efforts to address the escalating humanitarian emergency.
