The National Bank has announced that it will soon permit mobile money transfers to Safaricom.
Mamo Mihretu, the governor of the National Bank, reminded that non-bank telecommunications companies, fintech, and payment agents are invited to participate in the payment service sector, given that Safaricom Ethiopia, which has a license as the country's first private telecom service provider, will soon receive to provide mobile money services.
Allowing Safaricom to introduce the widely known M-Pesa mobile money transfer and payment service in Ethiopia.

Telebirr transformed into a super app.
To be unveiled today, March 23, at the Ethiopian Science Museum, Ethio telecom will unveil the newly updated super app - Telebirr, providing an array of services within a single interface, including e-commerce, food delivery, entertainment, utility bills payment, transportation, and more.
It marks another milestone for the state-owned operator as it continues to expand its mobile money platform in anticipation of the upcoming M-PESA.

BKMC and GCA announce online executive training for women
The Ban Ki-Moon Center for Global Citizen (BKMC) and Global Center on Adaptation announced the second iteration of the Online Executive Training for Young Women Leadership on Climate Adaptation from selected African countries, including Ethiopia.
With a blended learning approach of live zoom sessions and self-learning tools, over 20 weeks, the selected candidates will enhance their knowledge of Climate Adaptation, develop their leadership skills, and connect with professional networks.

EthSwitch raises capital to 3 Billion Birr.
To be used for the implementation of a revised five-year strategic plan, the capital aims to fulfill the demands of EthSwitch’s business and infrastructure needs, infrastructure development requirements, improve financial capacity, etc.

Ethiopia and Netherlands agree to launch a water management initiative benefiting over 10 million people.
The initiative, to be carried out through Nedamco Africa, a climate tech company, is aimed to reduce non-revenue water, increase water quality, and improve access to water by leveraging digital technology, according to the company.
“The solution will measure, report, and verify the outcomes of water management using digital twins in a fully digital and transparent manner,” it is stated.

UNCDF Digital and MinT to roll out a national survey on Digital and Financial Literacy in Ethiopia
UNCDF's Digital Financial Services for Resilience Programme in Ethiopia and the Ministry of Innovation And Technology- Ethiopia will roll out a nationwide survey later this year to assess the financial and digital literacy levels of Ethiopian citizens and the impact on digital finance activities.
Ahead of the survey kick-off, the parties will engage stakeholders to discuss in-depth the structure and delivery of the project. A stakeholders forum will take place on 28 March 2023.

Ahadu Bank has partnered with the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) as its 21st member, signing a memorandum of understanding with a focus on payment and transaction services.
According to Fortune Newspaper, the agreement allows traders to receive payment immediately after selling their products on the ECX floor through the bank’s payment gateway.
