Venereal belt Cestum veneris is the largest species of combworms, can reach a length of up to 2.5 m.
Adult combworms have a transparent gelatinous body of a ribbon-shaped shape, strongly elongated in width and flattened from the sides.
Eight rows of rowing plates shimmer with all the colors of the rainbow, and when moving, purple iridescences run through the entire body of the comb, thanks to which the venus belt received such a poetic name.
Representatives of this species lead a pelagic lifestyle, swimming due to the serpentine writhing movements of the ribbon-like body, which are provided by alternating contraction of muscle bands located along the flat sides of the body.
These combworms feed on planktonic crustaceans, which are caught and passed to the mouth by numerous antennae. In the dark, the ability of the Venus belt to glow is manifested.
Shrimp cleaners help various fish get rid of parasites that live on their bodies and in their mouth cavities.
For shrimp, these parasites are a way to diversify and enrich their diet. For pisces, it is a real deliverance from the irritants that bother them, and in gratitude they stand up to protect their assistants.
