🔆India is hosting the 46th meeting of ATCM: What is ATCM?
The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India, through the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (📌click here), will host the 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM 46) and the 26th Meeting of the Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP 26) from May 20 to 30, 2024, in Kochi, Kerala
The ATCM and meetings of the CEP are pivotal in the international community's ongoing efforts to safeguard Antarctica's fragile ecosystem and promote scientific research in the region
The Antarctic Treaty, signed in 1959 and entered into force in 1961, established Antarctica as a region dedicated to peaceful purposes, scientific cooperation, and environmental protection. India is also a signatory since 1983. (📌click here)
India’s first Antarctic research station, Dakshin Gangotri, was established in 1983. At present, India operates two year-round research stations: Maitri (1989) and Bharati (2012).

🔆Bodi Hills
✅A massive forest fire in Tamil Nadu's Theni district has claimed ten lives of trekkers who had gone mountain trekking in Kurangani hills in Bodi foothills.
✅Bodi hill is located in the Theni district, Tamil Nadu bordering the state of Kerala.
✅It is part of the southern Western Ghats.
✅Munnar, the popular hill station is near to this region.
✅West Bodi hill was selected as the site for the India’s ambitious India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO), project.

✅The Kabini River is an important tributary of the Cauvery.
✅It is a perennial river, 150 to 200 m. wide and has a course of about 240 kms.
✅It rises in the Western ghats in North Wayanad in Kerala State as two streams i.e. the Mannantoddypuzha and Panamarampuzha.
🔆Taiwan Strait:
✅The Taiwan Strait, or Formosa Strait is a 180 km-wide strait between mainland China and the island of Taiwan.
✅It runs between the coast of Fujian (Fukien) Province, China, and the island of Taiwan.
✅The strait is part of the South China Sea and connects to the East China Sea to the north.
✅The strait’s seafloor is mostly a continental shelf extending out from the Asian continent, with Taiwan on the outer edge.
✅It is relatively shallow. It has an average depth of about 490 feet, and a minimum depth of 82 feet.
📍Islands:
✅The biggest islands along the Taiwan side include Penghu (or Pescadores), Xiamen, and Pingtan.
✅The Xiamen and Pingtan Islands are administered by the People’s Republic of China, while the other three islands: Penghu (or Pescadores), Kinmen and Matsu are under the administration of the Republic of China (Taiwan).
🔆Sea of Japan
✅Sea of Japan, marginal sea of the western Pacific Ocean
✅It is bounded by the Japanese archipelago, Sakhalin, the Korean Peninsula, and the mainland of the Russian Far East.
✅The sea is separated from the East China Sea to the south by the Tsushima and Korea straits and from the Sea of Okhotsk to the north by the La Perouse and Tatar straits.
