🔆Mahadayi river
📍Why in news?
✅Karnataka’s decision to go ahead with a water diversion project on river Mahadayi has escalated its long-standing dispute on the issue with neighbouring Goa.
✅The Mahadayi/Mandovi Riveris described as the lifeline of the Indian state of Goa. The Mandovi and the Zuari are the two primary rivers in the state of Goa. Mandovi joins with the Zuari at a common creek at Cabo Aguada, forming the Mormugao Panaji, the state capital and Old Goa, the former capital of Goa, are both situated on the left bank of the Mandovi.
✅River Mahadayi originates from the Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary of Karnataka and flows into the Arabian Sea in Goa. Kalasa and Banduri streams are tributaries of Mahadayi.

🔆What is Campi Flegrei?
✅The strongest earthquake to hit Italy’s Campi Flegrei supervolcano region in decades struck recently.
✅Campi Flegrei (known as Phlegrean Fields in English) is an active volcanic area located in the vicinity of Naples, Italy.
✅Unlike the nearby Mount Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei is not characterised by a single volcano.
✅It is more of a volcanic system, with several centres situated within a caldera (the depression created when emptying magma chambers causes the roof of a volcano to collapse)
✅It was formed 39,000 years ago after an eruption emptied it of magma. According to a new hypothesis, this eruption could have been the beginning of the end of the Neanderthal.
✅One-third of it lies under the Tyrrhenian Sea, between the Italian mainland and the country’s island of Sardinia.
✅It is the largest active caldera in Europe. It is much larger than the cone-shaped Vesuvius, which destroyed the ancient Roman city of Pompeii in AD79 and is much more active.
✅It last erupted in 1538, after an interval of about 3000 years. This eruption, although minor in comparison, formed Monte Nuovo, a new mountain.
✅Scientists consider Campi Flegrei to be a supervolcano whose eruptions can have worldwide effects

✅It is located in the East China Sea between Japan, the People’s Republic of China, and the Republic of China (Taiwan).
✅The archipelago contains five uninhabited islands and three barren rocks, ranging in size from 800 m2 to 4.32 km2.
✅It is a natural island, a group of eight uninhabited islands
✅The Senkaku Islands dispute relates to a territorial dispute between China and Japan over a group of known uninhabited islands. Both Japan and China claim ownership of these islands. Senkaku Island is located in the East China Sea.

Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH):
✅The HKH region stretches 3,500 kilometres and spans eight countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan.
✅The range has numerous high snow-capped peaks, with the highest point being Tirich Mir or Terichmir at 7,708 meters (25,289 ft) in Chitral, Pakistan.
✅It is considered the Third Pole(after the North and South Poles) and has significant implications for climate.
✅It contains the largest volume of ice and snow outside of the Arctic and Antarctica.
✅The HKH region is the source of ten large Asian river systems: the Amu Darya, Indus, Ganges, Brahmaputra, Irrawaddy, Salween, Mekong, Yangtse, Yellow River, and Tarim.
✅The basins of these rivers provide water to 1.9 billion people, a fourth of the world’s population.
✅HKH may be divided into three main sections: the eastern Hindu Kush, the central Hindu Kush, and the western Hindu Kush, also known as the Bābā Mountains.
✅The inner valleys of the Hindu Kush see little rain and have desert vegetation.

📍Schengen area

India has three of these meteor impact craters:
1.Ramgarh in Rajasthan
2.Lonar in Maharashtra
3.Dhala in Madhya Pradesh.
Interestingly, these meteor impact craters are called Astroblemes.

🔆Mongla Port
✅The Port of Mongla is located in the Bagerhat District of Bangladesh. It lies 62 km north of the Bay of Bengal coastline.
✅It is situated at the confluence of the Pasur River and the Mongla River.
✅The Port is surrounded and protected by the Sundarban mangrove forest.
✅Mongla is the second largest seaport in Bangladesh after Chittagong.
📍Significance for India:
✅Provides strategic access to India's northeastern states (e.g., Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya).
Reduces distance and transportation costs for goods to and from these regions.
✅India Ports Global Limited (IPGL) has expressed interest in operating Mongla Port, which would be its third international port operation after Chabahar in Iran and Sittwe in Myanmar.
✅Expansion project: India and Bangladesh signed a MoU on the use of Chattogram and Mongla ports in 2015.
✅The MoU envisages the transit of goods from Mongla port to the northeastern states of India through waterways, roads and railways.
