Births plunged to their lowest in half a century last year while foreign-born parents accounted for a record four in ten, official figures show.
There were 585,396 live births in England and Wales last year - down from 594,677 the year before and the lowest since 1976 (584,270).
It was also the fourth lowest in 100 years.
40 per cent of births (235,273) in 2025 were to parents where one or both were foreign-born.
The largest nationality of birth was Indian followed by Pakistan then Nigeria.

Dragon ball Z lore is still a hectic allegory for world affairs.
Frieza is an intergalactic tyrant, running a dictatorship encompassing many planets and nations. He’s obsessed with power, recruits & manipulates various mutant races to his own ends but gets nervous after witnessing the innate abilities of one race of warriors called the Saiyans.
Saiyans are excellent at fighting, they learn and develop at a superior rate. They’re efficient, organised and are happy to die in battle if they need to. They don’t mix with other races, if they encounter aliens they just kill them.
Frieza struggles to control the Saiyans and fearing they could overthrow him, makes a genocide plan to exterminate them all which leaves only a handful of them alive. Frieza lies about the genocide and makes it seem like a random accident.
But one of the surviving Saiyans (assuming his race’s “ultimate form” which is golden hair / green or blue eyes) ends up defeating Frieza in a feat of irony.
Frieza is a cruel, genderless alien, paranoid about control and escaping death, while the Saiyans are a strictly male/female race of fighters with a royal family and a Feudal system of government, they love competition and consider dying in combat the greatest glory.
What we are learning about children's screen time is scary.

Three female police officers walk up to a man sitting on a barrier and tell him he’s under arrest. He stands up, casually shrugs off the attempt to restrain him, and jogs away while they make a half-arsed comical chase.
This is British policing in 2026.
These are the people you’re supposed to call when you’re in trouble.
You’re meant to feel safe knowing that you can rely on them.
When forces lower physical standards, dropping the bleep test requirement from 5.4 to 3.7 in many forces, removing the upper body strength test entirely in 2016, and prioritising diversity targets and recruitment numbers over real competence this is exactly what you get. Public safety becomes optional.
Get rid of DEI.
These officers need naming and the body cam footage needs releasing.
