It's undisputed Mussolini was a life-long radical Marxist revolutionary activist before creating the Fascist Party.
Some background illustrates other progenitors of Fascism were also "ex-communists" (they never gave it up, just revised a bit) or leaning in that direction.
Founder of the German Workers Party, which later became the NSDAP, was Anton Drexler. The DAP was a merging of Drexler's group with another group called the "Political Workers' Circle" which was dedicated to "socialist economics".
Gottfried Feder, another key NSDAP party founder who wrote the original 25 points party program, was a staunch "anti-capitalist" economic socialist. Gregor and Otto Strasser were key party members and well-known for being economic Marxists. Otto Strasser later resigned from the party claiming Hitler was not anti-capitalist enough for his tastes and Gregor was shot in the Night of the Long Knives purge. Goebbels was a member of the Strasser bros' northern faction before shifting his loyalties to Hitler. In 1925, Goebbels said in a speech, "the difference between Communism and the Hitler faith is very slight".
The French fascist party "French Popular Party" was led "by Jacques Doriot and a number of fellow former members of the French Communist Party (including Henri Barbé and Paul Marion)." In 1920 Doriot "joined the French Communist Party (PCF), quickly rising through the party - within a few years, he had become one of the PCF major leaders. In 1922 he became a member of the Presidium of the Executive Committee of the Comintern, and a year later was made Secretary of the French Federation of Young Communists"
Mussolini's right-hand man in the Italian Social Republic was Nicola Bombacci, a founding member of the Italian Communist Party who sat on its central committee. His last words before being shot alongside Mussolini by fellow communists was "Long live Mussolini! Long live socialism!"
Last but not least, Oswald Mosley, founder of British Fascism was formerly an MP for the "democratic socialist" Labour Party and whose previous economic proposals while an MP were praised by socialist-leaning economist John Maynard Keynes. Mussolini himself heaped praise on Keynes as as inspiration for fascist economics: "Fascism entirely agrees with Mr. Maynard Keynes...[his] excellent little book, The End of Laissez-Faire (1926) might... serve as a useful introduction to fascist economics"
