◦ India’s tiger population rose by 200 in the past four years to reach 3,167 in 2022.
◦ According to the data, the tiger population was 1,411 in 2006, 1,706 in 2010, 2,226 in 2014, 2,967 in 2018 and 3,167 in 2022
◦ The number of tigers has almost doubled in the last two decades in the country.
◦ As many as 1,161 of India’s tigers are now in Central India, 824 in the Western Ghats, 804 in the Shivalik Range, 194 in the North-eastern states and 100 in the Sunderbans.
◦ The Western Ghats, which are home to the largest tiger population in the world, have shown a significant fall in the occupancy of tigers.
◦ Tiger occupancy has also declined in the states of Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana.
◦ The north-western states such as Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh now have more tigers outside reserves, requiring officials to step up habitat conservation.
◦ The period covered in the survey 2018 to 2022 also saw 551 tiger deaths, with 208 of them adults.

Navy Acquires $300mn Worth of Equipment from the US
The weapons are for the MH 60 'Romeo' choppers, the most advanced multi role helicopters currently in service with the Indian Navy. #CAbyMilitaryChoice @ssbchoice
The deal for MH 60 Romeo naval multi role helicopters was signed in February 2020, at an estimated cost of $2 billion. The delivery of all 24 anti-submarine helicopters is expected to be completed by 2025.
The fleet of 24 choppers will get additional Hellfire missiles and Mk 54 lightweight torpedoes.
The Hellfire missiles are a potent anti shipping weapon and can be used to take down other ground targets like tanks and command posts as well. They also have limited air to air capabilities as well.
The Mk 54 light weight torpedoes, which are also equipped onboard the P8I maritime aircraft, are known to be a very effective anti submarine weapon.

Contract worth more than Rs 32,000 crore for Army & Navy
The Ministry of Defence signed four contracts worth more than Rs 32,000 crore which includes missiles for the Army, and Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels and Missile Vessels for the Navy. #CAbyMilitaryChoice @ssbchoice
The inked contracts include 11 Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPV) and six Next Generation Missile Vessels (NGMV), to be constructed by Indian shipyards at an overall cost of approximately Rs 19,600 crore.
Another contract worth Rs 9,100 crore is for procurement of improved Akash Weapon System and 12 Weapon Locating Radars (WLR), WLR Swathi (Plains) for the Indian Army.
A contract has also been firmed up with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited for Next Generation Maritime Mobile Coastal Batteries (Long Range) and BrahMos Missiles worth Rs 1,700 crore.
In another contract, 13 Fire Control Systems (Lynx-U2) for the Indian Navy at a total cost of over Rs 1,700 crore are to be supplied by the Defence PSU Bharat Electronics Limited.

INS Androth is an Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC).
It is built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata for the Indian Navy.
Primary Role is to conduct anti-submarine operations in coastal waters, low-intensity maritime operations, and mine-laying operations.
