People who've only gotten to know me in the last 10 years, or young men I've tried to help mentor to some extent during the last few years; they might look at me and see a man with a wife, children, a home and voice. But they didn't see everything that came before.
I'm not going to claim to have had 'a rough upbringing' or anything like that. I grew up in a happy household, in a nice part of England. But... I was a weird, awkward, shy, spotty teenager. I worked a bunch of shitty minimum-wage jobs. I've played in numerous bands, continuously since I was 16, most of which weren't taken seriously. I've been rejected by girls, and felt like my whole world crumbled. I've been beaten up, and failed at too many things to mention. Hel, I considered myself a damn Communist in my late teens, being one of the 300 'kettled' at Oxford Circus in the 2001 May Day protest.
I just feel it's important for disillusioned young men to know that it can be a long, winding road to reaching your goals. In fact, the longer and windier, the better the man you end up being. Take life one step at a time - don't expect everything to fall into place in your early twenties - enjoy the journey!

Listening is absolutely essential to interviewing. It makes your guest feel respected and comfortable, and enables you to react fluidly to what he says. Also, if you aren’t visibly listening, the audience will take their cue from you and phase out.

A hearth of heart & home
Relaxing, conversing, laughing & connecting by pub fireplace such as this one, is truly one of those places I feel most at 'home'. The crackling flames, the chatter of punters, a shaking dog's rattling collar, the merriment of laughter, it's an all encompassing atmosphere that is deeply embedded into our human existence.
The stories which a fireplace of this age could tell; the political ramblings, the ranting of government, the whispered secrets, the exposed lies, the cheers of welcomed home loved ones, the tears of those missed, the disagreeing neighbours, the reconciled friends, the tales told & the songs sung.
Only in a couple of generations, we've had our community's heart & communal home chipped away at, a subtle force to disband & divide us, & eroding our sense of togetherness, our sense of being One. Now, more than ever, the importance of rebuilding relationships, nurturing neighbours, crafting communities, is vital to unify us against those that truly mean us harm.

Sometimes clarify or summarise what the guest has just said. The audience are expecting to hear you as well, not just the guest talking non-stop. That would be mind-numbing. Your interventions shouldn’t dominate, but break up the interview into chunks; this refreshes the audience’s attention every so often.
