It is necessary to watch The End, the very episode, so as to understand the premise of the show. It’s also quite a thrilling novelty to see the ship pre-accident with all of its usual crew going about their humdrum work. You see how life aboard the ship was, when things were “normal”, and it is completely different from what how it will be hereafter.

Tim Curry was a gifted comedic actor, frequently hilarious. He also did serious stuff, including Will Shakespeare and City Sugar (both 1978). But for people of my generation, his big moment might have actually been Home Alone 2. However, we should not overlook this song performance in 1986's The Worst Witch... such theatrical mannerisms and body language! Such lust, intensity and determination!
