I am currently making my way through a 1972 BBC series, The Edwardians. The colour mastertapes for most episodes were lost due to the BBC's junking policy so they are only available in black & white. This is a shame because this is an excellent series, very well-written and well-made, and at a high dramatic level. The episode I have just watched is about Baden Powell, and it is a splendid piece of television that I really have to recommend to people. It is one of the best character studies I have ever seen.

It matters because she was the best teacher I ever had. She was always diligent, always honest with me, always had time for me, knew her subject thoroughly, and always pushed me to excel. Instead of noticing these things and being grateful, I concentrated on our rivalry… and forced it to an unpleasant head.

I wonder whether this reconciliation would have happened had I not “done the deed”. We will never know, but I do suspect that it ultimately led to a positive outcome that couldn’t have happened any other way. If so, I shouldn’t regret it so much.

I can imagine a new tradition, understood by everyone, of the “final night”. It would be spent in a cool room, or perhaps even outdoors, with one’s relatives and closest friends, and there would be much weeping the next morning when they awakened to find that the inevitable had happened, and their loved one had been released from all suffering.

Never interrupt the guest when he is reaching the culmination of an answer. I don’t think this needs explaining, but one does need to be reminded of it - including me, as I’ve inadvertently done it myself recently. It’s something to consider when you are thinking of interrupting: “will it do more harm than good?”

Whenever one critiques society or “people in general”, the danger is always that one is actually critiquing oneself, but obscuring this both from one’s audience and from oneself. The technique is to transfer one’s flaws onto “people in general”, those anonymous others who are innocent of the allegation but cannot reject it, instead of the truly guilty person.

Having flashbacks to my own teenage angst here. But it strikes me that this personal account by Woes holds true that men have to build there world view/experience whilst women mature into earlier and intuitively.
Perhaps that is why women grow up quicker, the male mind is a continuous project. The emergent teenage mind, quickened by puberty thrashes around trying to discover its place and capacity, its value.
A boys value is unknown and must be built, it is not inherent. The misunderstanding here is teenage Woes that Mrs Morton, all along was providing the whet stone that sharpens his vision. It was an adversity worthwhile and she had the wisdom to provide it. This essay is a very relatable example of the necessary tempering process the teenage boy must go through.
It should cause anyone to reflect upon past toughening lessons.

If someone kept a dog alive for five years with dementia, they would be prosecuted for animal cruelty. The common refutation to this is that it’s entirely different since humans are so different from animals. I don’t think that is a very convincing refutation. If anything, our consciousness and intellect make our suffering, and the fact of our relatives allowing us to suffer, even worse.

The Solonians cannot read their own ancient hieroglyphs, because the Earth Empire “overlords” have deprived them of their culture and history.
