On May 23, 2000, thousands of Lebanese rushed the facility in southern Lebanon and liberated 144 Lebanese political prisoners. Over the years, the prison held thousands of people who took part in any kind of resistance against the Israeli occupation. Lebanese prisoners were subjected to brutal forms of torture. Rana Harbi described it as "one of the most ruthless detention and interrogation centres in the Middle East."

Only two days following this historic day, the resistance in southern Lebanon forced Israelis to withdraw from the country after 22 years of occupation.
