Socialists Celebrate Overwhelming Win in Venezuelan Local Elections
The ruling left-wing coalition in Venezuela is celebrating after winning 285 of the country's 335 mayoralties this weekend.
The pro-government socialist alliance secured 23 of the country's 24 state capitals, plus the capital district of Caracas itself, on a relatively high turnout.
President Nicolas Maduro described the result as a “historic victory for the Bolivarian Revolution.” "We are a true force, an empowered people...while the opposition went from 125 to 50 mayorships, they lost 75, there must be a reason," Maduro added.
Right-wing opposition forces maintained their strongholds in Eastern Caracas, however.
Venezuela has been ruled by a socialist government since the election of Hugo Chavez in 1998. Since Chavez's rise, the country has been in the US' crosshairs. In recent years, it appears to have weathered the worst of the US sanctions.
