Yahya Sinwar, born in 1962 in Khan Younis refugee camp in Gaza, spent 23 years in prison. First arrested in 1982, he later met Hamas founder Ahmed Yassin and became part of his inner circle.
Sinwar co-founded Majd, which targeted Palestinian collaborators with Israel. In 1988, he was sentenced to four life terms for involvement in the deaths of two Israeli soldiers and four suspected Palestinian spies. While imprisoned, he learnt Hebrew to better his understanding of the enemy.
Sinwar was released in 2011 as part of a prisoner swap for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

The United States has designated the Palestinian prisoner support group Samidoun as a terrorist organisation, accusing it of being a "sham charity" that funds the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). Treasury official Bradley Smith claimed the group diverts humanitarian aid to support terrorism.
Canada, in coordination with the US, has also designated Samidoun a "terrorist entity."
