2024 Sachsenring Moto2 Practice 2 Result: For Better or Worse, Canet And Chantra In The Limelight
Although Saturday morning presented a more pleasant ambient around the Sachsenring, Friday’s benchmark went unchallenged in the final practice session for the lightweight class. It was a bittersweet result for Somkiat Chantra, who continued to lead the way on the combined timesheets despite starting his morning with a fast crash at turn 12 and missing the rest of the session. Behind the Thai rider, Aron Canet suffered a similar faith with a slightly different script, the Spaniard making a late jump to the top of P2 before tumbling out on the last lap.

2023 Sachsenring MotoGP Free Practice 2 Result: Oliveira Takes Over
The Sachsenring gave a warmer welcome to the premier class on Saturday morning, but the same familiar names hogged the limelight. After Jorge Martin held top spot for much of FP2, it was Miguel Oliveira’s turn to take control of proceedings until the chequered flag, leading the way by three tenths of a second over Martin. Maverick Viñales was also at the business end in 3rd, despite making his first mistake of the weekend with a late crash at the first corner.

Sachsenring MotoGP Friday Round Up: The Perils Of Turning Right, And Why Jorge Martin Is Favorite
Sachsenring MotoGP Friday Round Up: The Perils Of Turning Right, And Why Jorge Martin Is Favorite
The funny thing about Turn 11 at the Sachsenring is that everybody knows that it is a treacherous, treacherous place. You have just spent half a lap on the left side of the tire, you are cresting a hill where the wind tends to blow from your right, and unless it is 25°C or more, with bring sunshine, the grip when you flick right through Turn 11 and down the hill is going to be suboptimal at best.
The right side of the tire will let go as you drop off the crest and onto the right side of the tire, firing you through the gravel at 190 km/h or so. If you crash there, it is going to hurt. The gravel trap at Turn 11 has claimed more than its fair share of collarbones, scaphoids, ankles and more.
So what is most surprising about Turn 11 at the Sachsenring is that even though everybody knows it is so treacherous, they still insist on flinging themselves through the gravel on the Friday at pretty much every German GP. It has become a tradition.
This year, Turn 11 claimed 5 victims, including some pretty big names. David Alonso and Xabi Zurutuza in Moto3, Marc Marquez, Enea Bastianini, and Marco Bezzecchi in MotoGP. All of them were badly shaken up in the crash, with Marquez coming off the worst, fracturing a bone in his left index finger and major bruising to his ribs.
Let it go

Mike Webb Interview: How To Write The 2027 MotoGP Rules So The Factories Won't Find Ways To Cheat
Mike Webb Interview: How To Write The 2027 MotoGP Rules So The Factories Won't Find Ways To Cheat

After many long months of negotiation and analysis, the FIM and Dorna presented the technical rules for MotoGP due to be introduced in 2027. A capacity reduction to 850cc, a reduction in maximum bore size to 75mm, a ban on ride-height devices and further restrictions on aerodynamics are meant to reduce top speeds and give MotoGP circuits some breathing room, to slow the rate of progress.
Will it work? The history of MotoGP rule changes is that new restrictions tend to turbocharge innovation, as engineers try to find ways around the new rules put in place to obstruct them. So the task ahead of MotoGP's rule writers - Director of Technology Corrado Cecchinelli, ably assisted by Race Director Mike Webb and one or two other Dorna and IRTA staff - is to phrase the rules in such a way to prevent MotoGP engineers from driving a coach and horses through them.
In an interview I did with Corrado Cecchinelli for the Paddock Pass Podcast, he explained the ideas and concepts behind the new rules. Cecchinelli told me he defines the concepts he wants the rules to control, in agreement with the manufacturers who make up the MSMA [Motorcycle Sports Manufacturers' Association], and then Mike Webb turns those into the text to be included in the FIM Technical Regulations.

2024 Sachsenring Moto3 Practice 2 Result: Fernandez Leads Honda Resurgence
The much-improved conditions on Saturday morning allowed rapid progress on the timing screens in the lightweight class but it wasn’t until after the usual dawdling shenanigans begging for a penalty that Friday’s benchmark was outdone. Quite deservingly, it was Adrian Fernandez running in clear air that claimed the new lap record in the final five minutes of the session, while rookie Luca Lunetta separated the Leopard Racing duo later on to sneak into second position.

Silly Season Round Up: Mir To Stay With Honda, Seats Filling Rapidly, WorldSBK Moves
With Marc Marquez slotting into the second factory Ducati seat, prompting Jorge Martin to leave for the factory Aprilia squad, the other pieces of the MotoGP rider puzzle are starting to fall into place. With Assen now just under two weeks away, the rider market is starting to move.
Motorsport.com's Germán Garcia Casanova brings news of one of the most surprising moves on the market. Motorsport is reporting that Joan Mir is set to sign a new two-year deal with Repsol Honda. This is rather unexpected, as Mir has suffered a difficult first part of the season, and has been open in his criticism of HRC and the current iteration of the Honda RC213V. There were even credible rumors that the 2020 MotoGP champion was pondering retirement.
