Photo by @TimLaman. Male Costa’s Hummingbird I shot a couple weeks ago in California. Hummingbirds are of course tiny, so I had to be within about two meters of the bird to get this shot, even with a huge lens. But the great thing about them is that they are not afraid of us slow-moving humans. So once I found a perch this male often used, it was just a matter of gradually moving closer with my whole big camera/tripod rig, and waiting for him to come and land again on his “mark”. Photograph by @simonnorfolkstudio “When I am Laid in Earth” … A visualisation of the receding Lewis Glacier on Mt. Kenya. A mapping of “time’s thickness” by pyrographically documenting glacial retreat.
Using long exposures made in the middle of the night, the resultant images stem from the simple act of walking with fire along the glacier’s previous boundaries - by working out GPS coordinates from old maps…
And fire, the primordial element that first provided a gathering point for human culture and, through the burning of fossil fuels, a rapidly changing climate.
The flame line in this image shows the Lewis Glacier’s location in 1987. The pond is called the Curling Pond. In 1987 it’s surface was 15m higher than it currently is, penned in by a high back-wall of ice - the glacier’s snout. The glacier has since receded about 120m.
I won a Sony World Press Award and a LensCulture Earth Award for these images that helped win a lot of publicity for Project Pressure, the small NGO who commissioned the original project.

Guadalupe Island lies about 165 miles SW of Ensenada, Mexico and not far from the US border. The clear water and plentiful numbers of sharks in the Autumn make it one of the best places in the world to view a Great White Shark underwater. Migration patterns of Great Whites in the Pacific Ocean remain a bit mysterious. A couple hundred individual great Whites are known to visit these waters before swimming mysteriously far offshore in the winter to an area with little feed or sea life known as the White Shark café.

The monkeys are usually acquired when the parent monkey is shot for food and the baby is kept as a pet. The monkeys are much loved and often spend much of their day sleeping on people's heads especially when they are young like this one.
