▪️Indus Waters Treaty
▪️The Indus system comprises of main Indus River, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas and Sutlej.
▪️The basin is mainly shared by India and Pakistan with a small share for China and Afghanistan.
▪️Under the treaty signed between India and Pakistan in 1960, all the waters of three rivers, namely Ravi,Sutlej and Beas ( Eastern Rivers) were allocated to India for exclusive use.
▪️While, the waters of Western rivers - Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab were allocated to Pakistan except for specified domestic , non-consumptive and agricultural use permitted to India as provided in the Treaty.
▪️India has also been given the right to generate hydroelectricity through run of the river(RoR) projects on the Western Rivers which, subject to specific criteria for design and operation is unrestricted.

▪️Mahananda River is a trans-boundary river that flows through the Indian states of West Bengal, Bihar and Bangladesh.
▪️ The Mahananda is another important tributary of the Ganga rising in the Darjeeling hills.

▪️ Mahananda originates in Himalayas: Paglajhora Falls on Mahaldiram Hill near Chimli, east of Kurseong in Darjeeling district at an elevation of 2,100 metres (6,900 ft).
▪️It joins the Ganga as its last left bank tributary in West Bengal.
▪️tributaries Balason, Mechi, Kankai and River Kalindri.

🔷Geographical Indication Tag and GI Tagged Products
Geographical Indication (GI) Tag is form of intellectual property, a certification or sign or name given to certain goods/products that are unique to a particular geographical region or location. According to the WTO Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), “Geographical Indications (GIs) are the indications which identify a good as originating in the territory of a member, or a region or a locality in that territory, where a given quality, reputation or characteristic of the good is essentially attributable to its geographic origin.”

GI Tag is given to the goods by the Geographical Indication Registry (headquartered in Chennai) under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. The Act however came into effect from 15 September 2003. The GI Act is administered by the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, who is the Registrar of Geographical Indications.
Importance of GI Tag:
The tag ensures the quality and essential attributes of a food produced in a specific location. It also ensures that none other than the authorized users can use the GI tagged product name.
Some important facts regarding GI Tag:
✔️The first product that was awarded the GI tag in India was Darjeeling Tea in 2004-05.
✔️The GI tag is valid for 10 years and after that can be renewed for next 10 years.
✔️Karnataka has the highest number of GI tags i.e. 47 products followed by Tamil Nadu (39).
