Karnataka IT Minister Priyank Kharge on August 6, Wednesday came out against the Narendra Modi-led BJP saying that the party assumed power in the Centre claiming to be a "game changer" but has been reduced to a mere ‘name changer’ government. He was reacting to the Union government's specu;ated plan of renaming India as 'Bharat'. Taking to social media, Minister Kharge said before 2014, India was competing with developed countries like America, Russia and Britain.
"The Modi government that came to power claiming to be "game changers" is just "name changers"! Before 2014, India was competing with developed countries like America, Britain, Russia. Now, in the name of Gujarat model, UP model, they have created "Manipur model" by sowing hatred between castes and races. What else can be expected from the BJP other than name changes, which has put India in the position of patting itself on the back with Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka? Competent rulers bring change in India and not change the name of India," Priyank said.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that the Modi-led Central government’s move to rename the country as Bharat is not required. He maintained that the Constitution mentions the name of the country as India and is a name which is agreed upon by one and all. "There is no need for renaming it," he added.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said that "The Central government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, out of fear of our Indian National Democratic Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), are up to changing the name of Republic of India into Republic of Bharat".
"One can observe that the BJP and Central government are seeing their defeat in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The Indian currency has the name India on it and attempts are made to change it," Shivakumar stated.
The Uttar Pradesh police have registered an FIR against Tamil Nadu Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin for his remarks against ‘Sanatana Dharma,’ and also against Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge who later expressed support to these views. The Civil Lines police station under UP’s Rampur district has booked both the Ministers under sections 153A (promoting enmity) and 295A (insult to religion) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The First Information Report was registered on September 4, based on a complaint filed by a person identified as Ramsingh Lodhi.
At a Sanatanam (Sanatana Dharma) Abolition Conclave organised by the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers Forum on September 2, DMK leader Udhayanidhi had said that Sanatana Dharma must be eradicated, saying it was against the idea of social justice. The complainant called Udhayanidhi’s speech comparing Sanatana Dharma with diseases such as dengue, malaria and COVID “indecent”, saying it had hurt his religious sentiments. He claimed that Udhayanidhi’s remarks could adversely affect the maintenance of enmity and harmony between different groups on the basis of religion.
The complainant also objected to Congress leader Priyank Kharge endorsing Udhayanidhi’s views. Both DMK and Congress are part of the INDIA alliance of opposition parties.
Speaking at the Sanatanam Abolition Conclave, Tamil Nadu’s Youth Welfare and Sports Development Minister Udhayanidhi had said, “I congratulate the organisers for naming the conference as 'eradication of Santana dharma' instead of 'opposing Sanatana Dharma'... There are certain things which we have to eradicate and we cannot merely oppose. Mosquitoes, dengue, corona and malaria are things which we cannot oppose, we have to eradicate them. Sanatanam is also like this. Eradication and not opposing Sanatanam has to be our first task.” His remarks drew backlash and were condemned by BJP leaders and other right-wing groups as they interpreted it as advocating for ‘genocide’ of the followers of Sanatana Dharma.
Udhayanidhi had later clarified that he had not called for genocide. He said that even Prime Minister Narendra Modi had often called for a ‘Congress-Mukt Bharat’ but it doesn’t mean that he is calling for all Congress members to be killed. He further accused the BJP of twisting facts as a “regular habit.”
Following the controversy, Karnataka’s IT Minister Priyank Kharge defended Udhayanidhi’s remarks. “Any religion that does not promote equality, any religion that does not ensure that you have the dignity of being a human being is not a religion according to me. Any religion which does not give equal rights or does not treat you like humans is not a religion, so it is as good as disease,” he said.

TwitterThe Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to hear the writ petition filed by the president and three editors of the Editors Guild of India (EGI) challenging the FIR lodged by Manipur Police for releasing an alleged "biased and factually inaccurate" report on Manipur ethnic conflict.
The FIR was registered against the president of the EGI, and three editors -- Seema Guha, Bharat Bhushan and Sanjay Kapoor. The four had visited Manipur last month to study the media reportage of the ethnic violence and the circumstantial aspects.
The report accused Manipur media of writing "one-sided reports" to create a narrative in favour of the Meiteis and listed several fake news articles.

Article 1 of the Constitution says, “India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States” and goes on to talk about what constitutes Indian territory. This means that the Constitution recognises both ‘India’ and ‘Bharat’ as the official names of the country. How were both these names added in the Constitution and what did the makers of the Constitution feel about the names?
The discussion on the “Name and territory of the Union” was taken up by the Constituent Assembly on September 18, 1949. Incidentally, it is on September 18, 2023 that the special session of the Parliament has been convened.
During the Constituent Assembly discussions, BR Ambedkar moved an amendment to Article 1, which said, “India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States”. This was received with differing opinions by the members of the house, most of whom were in support of ‘Bharat’ but had doubts regarding ‘India’ or with the way the sentence was framed.
In the research paper titled ‘India, that is Bharat: One Country, Two Names”, scholar Catherine Clementine-Ojha cites what retired IAS officer V Sundaram had to say about the nation’s name: “According to V Sundaram, it is because ‘Bharat’ was thought to be too Hindu by the drafters of the Constitution that they introduced ‘India’ as a guarantee to the minorities that they would not be Hinduised.” This acquires significance when one considers the political context in which the Constitution was drafted. “[The Indian] Constitution was drafted under the extremely difficult circumstances of the immediate post-Partition period, just two years after horrendous chaos and bloodshed”. She refers to the period after Partition as a time “when the unity and stability of the newborn country were in doubt.”
Points raised by the Constituent Assembly members
Hari V Kamath, a member of the Constituent Assembly from the Central Provinces and Berar, suggested that Article 1 be read as, “ "Bharat, or, in the English language, India, shall, be and such" instead of “India, that is Bharat …”.
Seth Govind Das, also a member from the Central Provinces, felt that the drafting committee was not declaring the name of the country as beautifully as was necessary. “‘India, that is, Bharat’ are not beautiful words for the name of a country. We should have put the words ‘Bharat, known as India also in foreign countries’. That would have been much more appropriate than the former expression. We should, however, at least have the satisfaction that we are today giving to our country the name of Bharat,” said Seth Govind.
Meanwhile, Harigovind Pant, a member from the United Provinces, moved an amendment to change the name of the country as ‘Bharat’ or ‘Bharat Varsha’ instead of ‘India’. “I am gratified to see that some change in the name has at last been accepted. I, however, fail to understand why the word 'Bharat Varsha' is not acceptable to the House when the importance and glory of this word is being admitted by all here,” said Pant.
He went on to say, “So far as the word ‘India’ is concerned, the members seem to have, and really I fail to understand why, some attachment for it. We must know that this name was given to our country by foreigners who, having heard of the riches of this land, were tempted towards it and had robbed us of our freedom in order to acquire the wealth of our country. If we, even then, cling to the word ‘India’, it would only show that we are not ashamed of having this insulting word which has been imposed on us by alien rulers.”
On the other hand, members like Pandit Thakur Das Bhargava were in support of naming the country ‘India’. “I have no serious objection to it. It is a fact that we cannot live in isolation from the rest of the world; we have centuries old connections with England and the rest of the world. The world will always know us by the name of India. But so far as we are concerned, in our hearts and souls our country shall always remain as Bharat,” he said.
In a tragic incident, a four-year-old boy was killed after he fell into an open manhole in Greater Hyderabad on Tuesday, September 5. The incident occurred at Pragati Nagar in Bachupally on the outskirts of the city. The shocking visuals of the child falling into the open manhole were captured on CCTV cameras.
The boy, who was seen walking behind a man, was swallowed by the manhole which was overflowing following heavy rains. While the man took a long step to avoid the manhole, the boy failed to notice the pit and fell into it. The man looked back but could do nothing as the boy had disappeared. He then informed the boy’s family.
After being alerted by the locals, municipal authorities launched a search for the boy. The Disaster Response Force (DRF) also joined the search operation. As the drainage line joins a nearby lake, rescue workers began searching in the lake. The body of Mithun Reddy was found in the evening.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday, September 5 said that the mentality that killed Mahatma Gandhi, who lived a very pious life, also killed Gauri Lankesh, Narendra Dabholkar, Govind Pansare, and M.M. Kalburgi. In his remarks at programme 'Sarvadhikaarada hottalli deshavannu marukattuva kalpane' (Rebuilding of nation in the times of dictatorship) organised by Gauri Memorial Trust in memory of slain journalist and activist Gauri Lankesh at the town hall, he said: "Mahatma Gandhi lived a very secular life. Those who could not tolerate this mentality killed him. Gauri Lankesh is not with us today but her indomitable spirit is with us."
"Not only Mahatma Gandhi, Gauri Lankesh, they are writing threatening letters to all those who follow Basavadi Sharanas, Ambedkar, Buddha's ideology and oppose caste inequality and religious conflict," he said, assuring that the anti- social elements who are writing threatening letters to the writers, will be arrested and brought to justice no matter how powerful or influential they are.
"Gauri's soul will find peace only when the accused who killed Gauri are punished. I have discussed this with the police officers and got the information. In the over a thousand page charge sheet submitted, over 500 witnesses have been named. We have got information that the trial of the case is also going on quickly in the court. The professionalism and effort of the investigation team will not be wasted." He said that he is sure that the accused will be punished.
"Gauri Lankesh was the voice of the voiceless in the society. When I first became Chief Minister, Gauri met me dozens of times. But never once did she meet me seeking help for the newspaper, for her family, or for personal work. She came to seek solutions for the problems of tribals, farmers and workers," he said, expressing his sadness that Gauri was killed by those who could face her ideologically.
Former Kerala Minister KK Shailaja Teacher congratulated Siddaramaiah for defeating the ideology of the BJP and the RSS, which divided the people on the basis of caste and practiced corruption. Farmers leader Rakesh Tikait presided over the event, while human rights activist Teesta Setalvad, political activist Angela Rangad, multilingual actor Prakash Raj, Shailaja Teacher, Supriya Shrinate, Muslim Union leader Yasin Malpe, and former minister Anjaneya presented their thoughts.
Karnataka Agricultural Marketing Minister Shivananada Patil on Tuesday, September 5 sparked of a controversy after saying that the compensation package of Rs 5 lakh given by the government is resulting in more number of farmers's suicides. Speaking to reporters in Haveri, he claimed that the reporting of farmers’ suicide is creating panic among people.
"There are few who have died due to drinking liquor. There are those who died due to heart attacks. We have started to provide Rs 5 lakh compensation from 2015 for the farmers who committed suicide. Since then, the numbers have been rising. The media should also take note of this development. In 2020, more than 500 farmers had ended their lives. In 2021 more than 600 had committed suicide. But, if you consider FIRs, it is your mistake. The farmers are committing suicides for various reasons. Even deaths due to love cases is also considered as farmers’ suicides," he said.
"I don’t understand how newspapers are giving figures without cross checking. There are officers and before reporting, one should cross check with them. The relatives, thinking out of greed, that if the complaint is given as suicide due to crop loss, they will get compensation," he claimed.
"If the farmers meet injustice, there will be no delay in compensation. The legislators are pressured naturally by people. The wrong reports will create panic. Do not come to conclusion that death of a farmer is a case of suicide. The reason for death is not only loans, crop loss. There will be personal matters. Even the death due to snake bite is also reported as suicide," he added.
The farmers and activists have slammed Patil for his statements and demanded his resignation. Mallikarjuna Ballary, General Secretary of District Farmers’ Association, said that the organisation will provide him Rs 50 lakh and let him commit suicide. He also stated that the organisation would surround Patil and stage protests wherever he goes.

Following the incident of caste-based discrimination against a cook from the Dalit community, Karur district collector Prabhushankar visited the Panchayat Union Primary School on Tuesday, September 5. In a symbolic gesture of solidarity, the collector had his breakfast served at the school by Sumathi, who belongs to the Arunthathiyar community, which is categorised as Scheduled Caste. The Collector made a surprise visit to the school after half the students did not avail the newly-introduced free breakfast scheme in government schools, as the cook belonged to a Dalit community. He then interacted with the parents warning them of the consequences if they continued to discriminate against the government-appointed cook.
The incident took place in the Panchayat Union Primary School located in Velanchettiyur village near Aravakurichi, Karur district. The school has 27 students. According to authorities, some parents belonging to the Backward Caste and Most Backward Caste communities refused to send their children to school and prevented them from eating the government-provided breakfast, solely because the food was cooked by a Dalit woman.
As per news reports, more than three Backward Communities opposed Sumathi preparing the food, and declared a boycott against her. Following this, District Collector Prabhushankar and the authorities from the Education Department made a surprise visit to the school.
During his interaction with the stakeholders, a man from the Thottia Naiker community (Most Backward Caste) protested against Sumathi and said that if she continued to work there, his kids would not eat the food. This led to a heated argument following which the collector directed the police to take him to the police station.
Speaking to TNM, Prabhushankar said, “The issue came to our knowledge after we found out that half of the students did not have their breakfast at the school for a couple of days since the scheme was launched. When one of our officials went there and inquired about the matter, we came to know there was an underlying issue between Caste Hindus and Arunthathiyars and they oppose Sumathi continuing as a cook.”
“During the discussion, most parents agreed to send their children to avail the breakfast scheme, except one man from Thottia Naiker community. He insisted that he would not allow his kids to have breakfast.”
The Collector disclosed that he was taken to the police station where he was warned for practicing caste discrimination against the woman, and the action that could be initiated against him under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. He was later let off. “But, if the people fail to comply again, the district administration would definitely take stringent action against the perpetrators,” he assured.
TNM learnt that the district administration warned the parents about the consequences if they failed to allow their kids to eat breakfast at the school and continued to discriminate against Sumathi.
The new breakfast initiative was introduced by Chief Minister MK Stalin on August 25 for students of class 1 to 5. A total of 17 lakh students across the state would be benefited under the scheme. The Tamil Nadu government has allocated Rs 404.41 crores towards this scheme.
The Madras High Court on Tuesday, September 5 observed that the continuation of jailed minister V Senthil Balaji as a member of the Tamil Nadu government without portfolio after his arrest does not augur well with purity of administration and Constitutional ethos. The court also said that the continuation of Balaji as minister also does not serve any purpose.
A bench of the Madras High Court comprising of Chief Justice SD Gangapurwala and PD Audikesavalu said that Chief Minister MK Stalin should be advised to take a decision on continuation of the arrested minister in the Cabinet in the light of the observations made by the court. The court was responding while disposing of a bunch of writ petitions challenging the government's decision to let Senthil Balaji continue as minister in the Cabinet.
It is to be noted that Tamil Nadu minister Senthil Balaji was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on June 14 in a case related to money laundering. The minister had complained of chest pain immediately after the arrest and was admitted to Oramandur Government hospital, and three blocks in the heart were detected. He was later shifted to Kaveri hospital after Madras High Court allowed his plea to conduct surgery in a private hospital.
The Congress on Tuesday, September 5 said that it will participate in the Parliament's Special Session convened by the government and raise the issue of inflation, unemployment, losses in Himachal Pradesh and other northeastern states due to heavy rains, violence in Manipur and Haryana's Nuh among other issues. Addressing a press conference here at the party headquarters after the Parliament's Strategy Group meeting at the residence of Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, which was also attended by party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and several other Congress MPs, party MP Gaurav Gogoi said: "We discussed the important issues in front of the country, including economic issues whether it is inflation, unemployment."
Gogoi said that the losses in Himachal Pradesh and in northeastern states due to flood and landslides due to rain were also discussed. He said that during the meeting, the Manipur violence issue was discussed as people were still camping in the relief camps. "We will also raise the issue of Adani Group... and our demand for a JPC and the violence in Haryana's Nuh, due to the divisive politics of the BJP. These are the main issues in front of the country, but what is surprising that a special session has been called and the BJP itself is unable to clear what are the important agenda," Gogoi said.
He said that the Parliament is of the country and the government has accountability towards country and has to maintain transparency. "Our stand is clear that the Parliament belongs to people of the country and we want the issues of people in the Parliament discussed and we are ready for giving suggestion and participate in the session. Now it is up to the government to tell the agenda," he said.
Meanwhile, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said: "When a Special Session is called, the agenda and subject is shared with all parties and discussions are held with everyone. For the first time, we are seeing that suddenly that when the meeting of INDIA bloc was taking place in Mumbai then to divert the attention from INDIA a special session was announced. We don't have the knowledge of what will be taken up in the session."
He further said that on all the five days government business is mentioned to be taken up during the Parliament's Special Session. "After INDIA bloc meeting we will say that we will like to discuss the issues of people and we want that under which rule discussions can take place in Parliament. It is impossible that for five days it will be only government business. What will we do there, will we there be as a mute spectator and only listen to the praises for the Prime Minister?" Ramesh asked.
He also said that issues of economic, political, foreign politics, border issues should also be discussed in Parliament Session. "We hope that during this special session, the opposition will be taken along," Ramesh said and added that we would demand that under any rule there should be a detailed discussion on all issues.
Besides Kharge, several Congress MPs including Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Shaktisinh Gohil, Manish Tewari, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Pramod Tiwari, KC Venugopal, Rajani Patil, Ramesh, Manickam Tagore, Ravneet Singh Bittu, Syed Naseer Hussain, P Chidambaram, Shashi Tharoor, Gogoi and K Suresh arrived for meeting of the Congres Parliamentary Strategy Group at 10 Janpath here. The meeting at Sonia Gandhi's residence lasted for over one hour.
The Congress on Tuesday, September 5 termed the BJP government at the Centre "confused", saying that Prime Minister of Bharat Narendra Modi is going for the 20th ASEAN-India Summit. Taking a swipe at Modi, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, in a post on X, said: "Look at how confused the Modi government is. The Prime Minister of Bharat at the 20th ASEAN-India summit. All this drama just because the Opposition got together and called itself INDIA."
He also attached the picture of itinerary about Modi's upcoming visit to Indonesia which read 'Prime Minister of Bharat'. The itinerary was shared by BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra. Modi will leave for Indonesia during the night on September 6 and return to New Delhi late in the evening the following day (September 7). He will be attending the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) during ASEAN summit in Indonesia.
The ruling BJP and the Congress were engaged in a bitter war of words after the Rashtrapati Bhawan sent out invites for the G20 dinner of September 9 in the name of 'President of Bharat' instead of the usual 'President of India'.

Meanwhile, Ayodhya’s Tapasvi Chhawani Temple’s seer Ramchandra Das Paramhans Acharya on Tuesday reiterated his call and said that if required, he would increase the money from 10 crore and if needed he himself would do it.
Udhayanidhi Stalin, who is also the son of Chief Minister MK Stalin had in a programme organised by the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers Forum called for eradication of Sanatana Dharma, saying it resulted in caste injustice. Udhayanidhi's statement triggered backlash from many right wing groups, with BJP leaders from Amit Shah to JP Nadda coming out strongly against him.
While BJP leaders claimed that Udhayanidhi was calling for the ‘eradication’ or ‘genocide’ of followers of Sanatana Dharma, the TN Minister refuted this interpretation. He reportedly asked whether when Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for a 'Congress-mukt Bharat', he was asking for Congress members to be killed.

The Madras High Court on September 5 advised Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin to take a call on jailed DMK Minister V Senthil Balaji remaining part of the Council of Ministers. While passing an order disposing of a batch of petitions filed against V Senthil Balaji’s continuance in the state cabinet as a Minister without portfolio, Chief Justice of the Madras High Court Sanjay Vijaykumar Gangapurwala and Justice PD Audikesavalu observed that this did not augur well for “the purity of the administration” and constitutional ethos.
Senthil Balaji has been retained as a Minister without portfolio by CM Stalin even after his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on July 14 in connection with a money laundering case related to a cash-for-jobs scam in the state Transport Department during the previous AIADMK rule. The scam came to light in 2015 when Senthil Balaji was the Minister for Transport between 2011-2015.
There were three petitions filed in regard to his remaining part of the Cabinet – one by advocate ML Ravi of Desiya Makkal Sakthi Katchi, another by advocate S Mini Ramachandran and yet another by former South Chennai AIADMK MP J Jayavardhan. The petitioners wanted the High Court to intervene and exercise its powers under Article 226 (Power of High Courts to issue certain writs) of the Constitution to declare the Minister as unfit to hold the post.

The Tamil Nadu government argued that a person could not be disqualified from holding a Cabinet berth because an FIR was registered against him. Appearing for the state, Advocate General R Shanmugasundaram argued that it was the prerogative of the Chief Minister to decide on the members of his cabinet.

A five-judge Constitution Bench, headed by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, on Tuesday, September 5, reserved its judgement in the batch of petitions challenging the 2019 Presidential Order taking away the special status accorded to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, and its bifurcation into two Union Territories. The hearing of the case recommenced after three years, and went on for 16 days, starting from August 2. The bench also comprises Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, and Surya Kant.
The petitioners, in addition to challenging the special order, also challenged the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act that bifurcated it into Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
In March 2020, a five-judge Constitution Bench declined to accept the contentions of the petitioners to refer the issue to a larger bench of seven judges. The five-judge Constitution Bench, headed by the then CJI NV Ramana, reasoned that the earlier judgements rendered by the top court in the Prem Nath Kaul case and the Sampat Prakash case, dealing with the interpretation of Article 370, were not in conflict with each other. CJI Chandrachud and Justice Khanna are the new members of the latest bench as Chief Justice Ramana and Justice Subhash Reddy, who were part of the earlier bench, had retired.
