32 Teams/32 Days: New York Giants
# 32 Teams/32 Days
# Team: New York Giants
Division: NFC East (3rd, 3-3 in Division)
Record: 6-11
Playoffs: Lol
PFF Rank: 32/32
Quick History: After a decade of mediocrity, the arrival of Schoen and Daboll were like a blessing from above. For those who have been around, you’ve likely noticed the lack of Giants highlights. While there have been some noteworthy plays, we haven’t had any explosive playmakers in a few years. We finished 2022 with one of the slowest WR corps in the league, a WR1 who might’ve finished top 40 in yards, a TE who finished with both eyes, and some question marks at offensive line. However, the Giants also saw the emergence of All-Pro players Andrew Thomas and Dexter Lawrence, who have become bedrocks of the trenches.
But in a division with two playoff caliber teams and the Commanders, it’s far too soon to celebrate.
# 2023 DRAFT:
Round 1, Pick 24: Deonte Banks, CB. Maryland. The Giants traded their first (25), 5th (160), and 7th (240) to Jax to move up one spot to draft Banks as a CB2 opposite Adoree Jackson. Banks had a trial by fire, but had a successful rookie season with a few injuries. Banks would end the year with stats comparable to Sauce Gardner, beating him in passer rating against and completion percentage allowed.
Round 2, Pick 57: John Michael Schmitz, C, Minnesota. Arguably the best center in the draft, Giants hit one of their biggest needs. Schmitz was projected to go in the first, but slipped to the second. JMS progressively got worse during the season, which indicates bad OLine coaching. This culminated in a pass block grade of "0" against the Rams in Week 17.
Round 3, Pick 73: Jalin Hyatt, WR, TN. The Giants traded their third (89) and fourth (128) to snag a speedy WR who can stretch the field and make the most of Daniel Jones' beautiful deep ball (119.3 passer rating, 3rd in NFL in 2022). Hyatt would finish his rookie season without a TD.
Round 5, Pick 172 (Comp Pick): Eric Gray, RB, Oklahoma. Eric found a home as a punt returner. Eric shortly became homeless.
Round 6, Pick 209 (from KC): Tre Hawkins, DB, Old Dominion. Tre “Ball Hawkins” immediately impressed in training camp, locking down the veteran Shepard and stayed in step with the speedy Hyatt on deep balls. His success stayed in the preseason, and Hawkins would spent most of the season on the bench.
Round 7, Pick 243: Jordan Riley, DT, Oregon.
Round 7, Pick 254 (Comp Pick): Gervarrius Owens, S, Houston.
The Giants seemed to come out of the draft strong, hitting not just areas of need but drafting three players that were all mocked to be first round picks (Banks, Schmitz, Hyatt). Trading Toney to Kansas turned into a great short-term deal for both teams, as Toney played a key role in Kansas City’s Super Bowl win in 2022, and Schoen turned the picks into a trade for Darren Waller and had a potential starting corner in the sixth.
# Free Agency Deals:
Daniel Jones, QB: 4 year, $160 million, $82M guaranteed, $35M in incentives, and an out after the second year.
Saquon Barkley, RB: Franchise tagged. Turned into a one year, $11 million deal with bonuses.
Sterling Shepard, WR: 1 year, $1.317 million with $38.125 per game active roster bonus. No guarantees until Week 1.
Isaiah Hodgins, WR: 1 year, minimum salary.
Jamie Gillan, P: 2 year, $4M deal with $1M in incentives. The Scottish Hammer had an inconsistent 2022 season, but did well enough to get an extension.
Wyatt Davis, OL. Played one game in 2022. 1 year, $940K.
Matt Breida, RB. 1 year, $1.4M with $500K guaranteed.
Nunez-Roches: 3 year, 12M, 7.5M guaranteed
Bobby Okereke, LB: 4 year, $40 million, $22M guaranteed
DARREN WALLER, TE: Traded the Toney pick (#100) for Waller and a 6th. 4 year, $45M with $8.25M guaranteed after one year. Essentially a one year prove it deal that gives Daniel Jones an immediate weapon so long as he stays healthy. One of my favorite players in
maintenance went...elsewhere. I win. 5-4-1.
* Acrisure Stadium (aka Heinz Field) - Pittsburgh Steelers: This ain't no aluminum stadium, we're talking American steel, baby! My blows only serve to anger the stadium. A flurry of yellow engulfs me. My God...the towels...I forgot about the towels! My last memory is the stink of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania entering my nostrils. 5-5-1.
* Paycor Stadium - Cincinnati Bengals: Definitely a beauty, but from Wikipedia: *"The construction of the stadium was funded by taxpayers to tune of $555 million, the largest public subsidy for an NFL stadium at the time. The Bengals had threatened to leave Cincinnati unless the city agreed to subsidize the stadium. In 2011, The Wall Street Journal described the stadium deal as "unusually lopsided in favor of the team and risky for taxpayers." Since then, additional costs have been imposed on taxpayers related to the stadium. By one estimate, taxpayers will have paid $1.1 billion by 2026, the year in which the 26-year deal expires."* I smile and crack my knuckles, feeling the support of the locals as I pound its pretty little facade. 6-5-1 me.
# AFC South
* NRG Stadium - Houston Texans: I don't stand a chance, as this stadium is a critical part of public safety during hurricanes and floods for Houstonians (Houstonanites? Houstonmen?). I realize I cannot beat it and move to forfeit. I'm greeted with 2 feet of surging water, sweeping me away. I use my last breath to argue that this is outside the stadium and doesn't count, but the ref has also been swept away and cannot process the appeal. 6-6-1.
* EverBank Stadium - Jacksonville Jaguars: Finally, practically a gimme! I sleep in and arrive the stadium just in time for the fight. I glance around and spot a swimming pool filled with beautiful women! I check the clock; still time! I slick back my hair and stride over, hoping to join in some traditional Jacksonville breakfast of Fireball whiskey and more Fireball whiskey. As I near the closest pool, it dawns on me: These are Jacksonville women. My blood runs cold. The sun-bleached hair...the sun-damaged skin...my God, the melanoma! Has no one around here heard of sunscreen?! I turn to run and slip on the wet deck, hitting my head and providing sweet relief to being trapped in Florida. 7-6-1 stadiums.
* Lucas Oil Stadium - Indianapolis Colts: A venue I am very familiar with, giving me the upper hand. I whisper "Tom Brady..." Anger in the building rises as it responds "January 21, 2007." Ok, that's fair. "What's that banner up there? 2014...I can't quite make it out..." The roof slowly opens but gets jammed. EZPZ win. 7-7-1.
* Nissan Stadium - Tennessee Titans: I stumble to the stadium, still drunk from the night before. My head stings as some memories come flooding back...tequila shots...mechanical bulls...telling women I thought country music was totally awesome even though it's all corporate swill nowadays...getting branded in the back of a Toyota Tacoma as part of some initiation or possibly sex thing? No way I'm winning this. I step onto the field, littered with Coors Light and Modelo cans. No Bud Light? Weird. Turns out there was yet another Kenny Chesney concert here last night and the stadium is more hungover than I am. We agree not to fight and just chill in the quiet with some Gatorade instead. 7-7-2.

Why was Peyton’s final season (2015) so awful compared to previous seasons?
Post-neck surgery ([Sept. 2011](https://sinicropispine.com/history-peyton-mannings-neck-surgeries/)), he:
* Set an NFL record for TD passes in 2013 (55)
* Won an MVP award the same year
* Threw 35+ TD passes in 3 straight seasons
I know a neck injury is very serious, but yet he accomplished all those things, and more, in the first 3 seasons after returning. Then comes 2015.
* 9-17 TD-INT ratio (5.1 INT%)
* 67.9 passer rating
TL;dr why was his final yr so bad vs. previous post-neck injury yrs?

What player is rated too highly by people who only look at stats? Personally, I think it might be Derek Carr because his stats are padded by garbage time almost every season.

Who was the worst QB ever to play for your team?
For us it was hands down Akili Smith. Wasted the 3rd overall pick on him (and turned down the entire Saints draft's worth of picks to do it) only for him to look like how I would imagine a random fan being pulled off the street to play QB for an NFL team would look.

Only 3 times in NFL history has a QB who lost his first Super Bowl start gone on to win a Super Bowl in his career
There have been 67 Quarterbacks to start a Super Bowl game. Of these, 36 of them lost the game in their first start.
Only three quarterbacks in that pool have come back to win the Super Bowl in their careers.
-Len Dawson lost the first Super Bowl ever, and then won the fourth Super Bowl with the Chiefs. It should be noted that Dawson had already won an AFL championship in 1962 prior to the invention of the Super Bowl.
-Bob Griese lost his first Super Bowl start, and then won two in a row with the Miami Dolphins.
-John Elway lost his first three Super Bowl starts, and ended his career on back-to-back titles with the Broncos.
Each of the other 33 have failed, at least thus far, to win the Super Bowl. Of course, some of them are still active. Assuming Matt Ryan is indeed retired, it's possible that Jared Goff, Jimmy Garoppolo, Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, or Brock Purdy could buck this trend. Although as you can see, they have a lot of history to overcome.
What do you guys think is the reason for this trend?
Edit: For context, here are the stats for the other 31 QBs who won their first SB start:
11/31 won at least one more Super Bowl in their careers.
15/31 made at least one more Super Bowl in their careers, compared to just 6/36 for the losers.
Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford, and Joe Flacco could all technically raise these numbers if they were to make/win another Super Bowl as well.

Biggest names that retired in 2023/could retire in 2024,
So not sure if there was any official announcements yet for those who have retired in 2023 but who could retire and you think won't come back in 2024? I wanna say the biggest name that retired in 2022 was jj watt, but couldn't recall anybody who may almost be done to hang it up after 2023.
Also, looking ahead, who would be the biggest names who could hang it up after 2024? My mind immediately jumps to Aaron Rodgers, I know he said he may go past 2024 but he's after 40, and often invited. He's probably just doing it for some more attention.
Any other big names that could retire you think in 2024?

Rating NFL AFC Stadiums Based on How Easily I Could Beat Them in a Fight
[Based on this post from several years ago.](https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/vllhzh/power_ranking_of_nfl_mascots_based_on_how_easily/?rdt=50770) NFC stadiums to come at a later date after I've rested up from these fights.
# Context / assumptions
* Fighting limited to stadium grounds, fight to the death
* No outside weapons allowed by either party
* My opponent is a literal building where everything functions as designed (e.g. decorations like a pirate ship actually fire)
* I am fighting a literal building that, where applicable, does not need staff running functions (e.g. cannons can auto-fire)
* I’m a 6’0" and 155 pound male in his late-30s, reasonably in-shape but no meaningful fighting experience
# AFC East
* Highmark Stadium - Buffalo Bills: It's cold af in Buffalo, but this stadium is old and being demolished anyway. I basically just have to keep warm and wait for the inevitable demolition. EZPZ win. 1-0 me.
* Hard Rock Stadium - Miami Dolphins: This stadium will pull out every cheap shot in the book; sun in my eyes, flooding to make me slip. Honestly I'll take a beating, but the ref will step in and DQ the stadium for all these shenanigans. 2-0 me.
* MetLife Stadium - New York Jets/Giants: I enter the stadium to complete silence (so you know it's game day). Years of anguish as a Patriots fan, knowing what vile teams have made this place home. I've been training, preparing my body, my mind, my very soul. This is personal. I feel my pulse rise as I trot out through the tunnel, eager to avenge thousands of fans. My foot hits turf and I hear a **SNAP.** Torn Achilles. Well played, MetLife. 2-1 me.
* Gillette Stadium - New England Patriots: They've got muskets here. With my torn Achilles, ain't no way I'm taking down a stadium wielding muskets. 2-2.
# AFC West
* Arrowhead Stadium - Kansas City Chiefs: My Achilles healed, I feel a need to boost my confidence with a win. Arrowhead, though? Any damage I inflict will be met with instant death from the fans. I make my appeal to the ref that the fight is only supposed to be between me and the stadium, not fans of the team, but he says they live here so he can't do anything about that. I forfeit. 3-2 stadiums.
* Allegiant Stadium - Las Vegas Raiders: This stadium is something else! It tries to tempt me with slots at every turn, but I remain focused. I step onto the field and am hit with a blast of Las Vegas heat. Son of a bitch turned off the AC. It's like an oven in there. I desperately look for relief but only find more slot machines and ads telling me to gamble. 4-2 stadiums.
* Empower Field at Mile High - Denver Broncos: Having been to Denver before, I know all about altitude sickness. I arrive a week before my fight, training hard to get my heart pumping extra hard to get that oxygen to my brain and muscles. I pull up to the stadium only to find it engulfed in flames once more. He must have left the oven on when he was done cooking. Stadium forfeits. 4-3 stadiums.
* SoFi Stadium - LA Chargers/Rams: I'm in awe of such beauty! It seems almost criminal what I'm about to do. Fortunately they only need to worry about football games here every couple Februarys so I don't feel bad; they'll have plenty of time to clean up and rebuild before hosting fans of football. Smashy smashy! 4-4.
# AFC North
* M&T Bank Stadium - Baltimore Ravens: A solid stadium. No particular weapons that tip the scales in its favor. We fight from dawn 'til dusk with no clear winner emerging. It's a draw. 4-4-1 stadiums.
* Cleveland Browns Stadium - Cleveland Browns: Rage builds in me, sweat pours from my brow. This is where Deshaun Watson played. Then I chuckle at how much he got paid only to barely play. The Dawg Pound sits empty (which makes it slightly more threatening that game day when it's filled with fans that are dead inside) and a twinge of guilt hits for the pain I'm about to rain down. I brush away the fleeting feeling and get beating. It's surprisingly easy, almost like the money that should have gone into

Superbowl Winners who were not the best team in the league
Who's the team that beat the team they normally lose to 9/10 times, they just happened to be the 1 time. For example, the 2007 Giants were not better than the 16-0 Patriots, but it just happened the Giants were good enough that day to beat them. If that makes sense.
