"One after another the roots prevail as the cycle goes around,
Fading into one another and increasing as their appointed turn arrives.
For they are just themselves, and by running through one another
They become men and all the other kinds of creatures,
Now being brought together by love into a single orderly arrangement,
Now being borne asunder by the hostility of strife,
Until they grow together as one and the totality is overcome.
Thus, in that they have learnt to become one from many
And turn into many again when the one is divided,
In this sense they come to be and have an impermanent life;
But in that they never cease from alternation,
They are for ever unchanging in a cycle."
Empedocles, fragment DK 31B26
"I could conceive of a national war, but how many such wars have there been? One in a thousand years, perhaps; for the rest, among civilized nations especially, who reflect on it and know what they are doing, I confess I don't understand it at all. It could be said that glory explains everything; but, in the first place, glory only goes to the leaders; in the second place, this only evades the difficulty, for then I must ask precisely why this extraordinary glory is attached to war."
~ Joseph de Maistre
"Death, after all, is the eternal bride to whose arms the brave man must aspire."
— Jose Saramago

Some aspects of the primary female powers within the Þórr siðr.
Þórr’s wife Sif and his daughter Þrúðr are described with the imagery of the valkyries, flygjur, and dísir, all interchangeable names for the female guiding spirits which determine fate and the fate of family lines in Ragnarsdrápa 8 and 9:
(…) þás hristi-sif hringa (…)
“the shaking-Sif of rings”
(…) sú bœti-Þrúðr dreyrugra benja (…)
“that healing-Þrúðr of bloody wounds”

“In the end things must be as they are and have always been--the great things remain for the great, the abysses for the profound, the delicacies and thrills for the refined, and, to sum up shortly, everything rare for the rare.”
— Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil
"Long periods of peace foster certain optical illusions, among them the conviction that inviolability of home is grounded in the constitution which guarantees it. In reality, it is grounded in the family father, who, sons at his side, appears at the door axe in hand."
— Jünger

”Besides, it is a disgrace to grow old through sheer carelessness before seeing what manner of man you may become by developing your bodily strength and beauty to their highest limit. But you cannot see that, if you are careless; for it will not come of its own accord.”
— Xenophon
"Man's proper stature is not one of mediocrity, failure, frustration, or defeat, but one of achievement, strength, and nobility. In short, man can and ought to be a hero"

“What do we know ... of the world and the universe about us? Our means of receiving impressions are absurdly few, and our notions of surrounding objects infinitely narrow. We see things only as we are constructed to see them, and can gain no idea of their absolute nature. With five feeble senses we pretend to comprehend the boundlessly complex cosmos…”
