Personalized Nutrition for Depression: Impact on the Unholy Trinity
New Paper by USERN Interest Group
🌀Recent studies indicate that MDD is also associated with changes in the gut microbiota and that the latter is mainly modulated by diet.
🌀Microbiota-based personalized nutrition aims to provide an individual-specific diet that will yield the maximum benefit from a given diet since the gut microbiota is accounted for the variations that individuals present in response to a given food.
🌀This review, presents and discusses 5 possible outcomes of using microbiota-based personalized nutrition. Harnessing this approach is essential to design more accurate therapies to prevent and treat MDD or to even help in drug metabolism, especially in the case of antidepressants.

Innate lymphoid cell subsets and their cytokines in autoimmune diseases
New Paper by USERN Interest Group
🌀Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) are an important type of innate immune cell, whose role has been highlighted in recent years.
🌀ILCs are responsible for some of the inflammation in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases.
🌀In this review, we discuss the role of ILCs in the immune response, as well as their involvement in various autoimmune diseases.

Neuronal and glial CSF biomarkers in multiple sclerosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis
New Paper by USERN Interest Groups
🌀CHI3L1 was the only marker with higher levels in MS than CIS. GFAP levels were higher in PMS versus RRMS, and NFL, t-tau, and CHI3L1 did not differ between different subtypes.
🌀Only levels of NFL were higher in patients in relapse than remission. Meta-regression showed influence of sex and disease severity on NFL and t-tau levels, respectively and disease duration on both.

Association of PTPN22 single nucleotide polymorphisms with chronic spontaneous urticaria
New Paper by USERN Interest Group
🌀Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is thought to be an autoimmune disease in a subpopulation of patients. Protein tyrosine phosphatase-22 (PTPN22) polymorphisms are considered to be one of the strongest contributing factors to autoimmune diseases.
🌀Polymorphisms of the PTPN22 gene are associated with an increased susceptibility to CSU in the studied Iranian population.

Primary immunodeficiency associated with hypopigmentation: A differential diagnosis approach
New Paper by USERN Interest Group
🌀Primary immunodeficiency diseases (PIDs) are a group of more than 400 disorders representing aberrant functioning or development of immune system. Hypopigmentation syndromes also characterize a distinguished cluster of diseases.
🌀Hypopigmentation may also signify a feature of genetic diseases associated with immunodeficiency, such as Chediak-Higashi syndrome, Griscelli syndrome type 2, Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome type 2 and type 10, Vici syndrome, and P14/LAMTOR2 deficiency, all of which are linked with dysfunction in vesicular/endosomal trafficking.
🌀As an aid to clinician, distinguishing the pathophysiology, clinical phenotype, and diagnosis as well as treatment options of the six mentioned PID disorders associated with hypopigmentation are described and discussed in this review.

Comparison of Losartan and Amlodipine Effects on the Outcomes of Patient with COVID-19 and Primary Hypertension: A Randomized Clinical Trial
New Paper on COVID-19 by USERN Interest Group
🌀Controversy exists regarding the drug selection in hypertension (HTN) management in patients with COVID-19.
🌀There was no priority in losartan or amlodipine administration in COVID-19 patients with primary HTN in decreasing mortality rate, hospital and ICU length stay. Further studies need to clarify the first-line anti-HTN medications in COVID-19.

Novel Product for the Management of Coronary Ruptures Happening during Percutaneous Coronary Interventions
New Paper by USERN Interest Group
🌀Coronary artery perforation during percutaneous coronary interventions is a rare but dreaded complication.
🌀One of the treatment methods for this complication is the injection of an obliterating material into the ruptured vessel.
🌀We will introduce a novel material named "Spongostan" for embolization with significant advantages over available treatment options.

Low Vitamin D Status at Admission as a Risk Factor for Poor Survival in Hospitalized Patients With COVID-19: An Italian Retrospective Study
New Paper on COVID-19 by USERN Interest Group
🌀Preliminary findings suggest a relationship between lower serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels and incidence and severity of COVID-19.
🌀A high prevalence (100%) of hypovitaminosis D in patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19, suggesting a possible role of low vitamin D status in increasing the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and subsequent hospitalization.
🌀The inverse association between serum 25(OH)D levels and risk of in-hospital mortality observed in our cohort suggests that a lower vitamin D status upon admission may represent a modifiable and independent risk factor for poor prognosis in COVID-19.

Corticosteroids in idiopathic granulomatous mastitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis
New paper by USERN Interest Group
🌀Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is an inflammatory disease of the breasts with an unknown etiology. Corticosteroids are one the primary options of treatment.
🌀We assessed the effectiveness of corticosteroids on IGM by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis.
🌀This meta-analysis showed that managing IGM with only steroids may be less effective than the combination of steroids and surgery. This combination approach may result in a lower rate of recurrence and side effects in these patients.
