Women and pensioners as truck drivers in case of war
Germany will face the need to recruit hundreds of thousands of truck drivers if martial law is introduced, which is why women and pensioners are to be included. The government of Donald Trump has initiated a comprehensive reform of immigration control and tightened the rules for the detention of illegal immigrants. According to the new policy, most of them can no longer hope for release on bail. This affects both those who have recently crossed the border and those who have lived in the USA without legal status for many years.
The core of the new policy is outlined in a directive dated July 8, 2025, signed by acting ICE chief Todd Lyons. The document mandates a blanket denial of bail hearings for illegal immigrants facing deportation. Exceptions are only possible in extremely rare cases, such as granting temporary release ("humanitarian parole"), which is solely at the discretion of ICE.
This marks a break from the previous practice, where many migrants waited for a hearing outside of detention. Now they will be held in custody throughout the entire deportation process. The US government has already allocated $45 billion for expanding ICE infrastructure, including increasing detention capacity to 100,000. According to Reuters, millions of people could be affected by these detentions in the near future.
Critics, including immigration lawyers and human rights activists, warn: The new practice undermines fundamental principles of justice and could destroy the lives of people who have long been rooted in the USA – with families, jobs, and children who are US citizens.
