II. TAXES AND DUTIES. Differences.

1. VAT (Value Added Tax)
A key distinction between the tax systems of most countries and the USA is the presence of VAT. The USA is the only country in the top 10 economies without a federal VAT. Instead, it has a Sales Tax (next, ST), which is significantly weaker than VAT since it’s levied only once, on the final retail consumer. VAT, by contrast, is paid at every stage of production or sale, including wholesale transactions, while ST applies solely to retail purchases.
Also In the USA, there are 5 tax-free states (AK, DE*, MT, NH, OR).
*Delaware stands out as a unique state where many crypto ETFs and trusts (e.g., Fidelity, Bitwise, Franklin) are registered due to its lack of state income tax (for non-residents) and numerous other tax benefits.
Avg. combined ST in the USA: 7.12% (NY - 8.87%, TX - 8.25%, CA - 9.5%, DC - 6%).
VAT Rates:
• EU: 20–25% (Germany - 19%, France - 20%)
• China: 13%
• India: 15–18% (GST, an equivalent of VAT)
• UK: 20%

2. IMPORT DUTIES (Average Tariff Rates on Imported Goods*)
• USA: 3.3%
• EU: 5%
• China: 7.5%
• UK: 4.5%

3. AUTO (Avg. Import Tariffs on Foreign-Made Cars)
• USA: 2.5%* (passenger cars), 25% (trucks and pickups)
• EU: 10% (gasoline passenger cars), 22% (trucks) + surcharges for electric vehicles from China: 18–43% (Tesla - 7.8%, BYD - 17%)
• China: 15%
• India: 60% (gas engines <3L), 100% (gas engines >3L)
• UK: 10%

4. ADDITIONAL TAXES.
The EU and China impose duties on certain goods (e.g., cars, steel, aluminum, cement, etc.) for emissions via ETS (Emissions Trading System) and CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, starting 2025) — environmental taxes based on emissions per ton of CO2.
While we won’t dive deep, these generated $43 billion for the EU in 2023 and $350 million for China.
In the U.S., these taxes don't exist…
