Saint Philoumenos was born on Cyprus in 1913, one of 13 children in a devout Orthodox family. From an early age he practiced asceticism, prayer, fasting, reading scripture and lives of the saints and was known for his humility and kindness. At 14, he and his twin brother Elpidios left home to become monks at the monastery of Stavrovouni. After five years they were invited to join the Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, beginning half a century of devoted service to God's Church and its pilgrims in the Holy Land. In 1948, the saint stood before a bulldozer and prevented crazed jews from destroying the Holy Apostles monastery. Thirty years later, as abbot of Jacob's Well, he was regularly harassed by fanatical zionists who demanded that he remove crosses and threatened his life. On November 29, 1979 Saint Philoumenos was tortured, mutilated and killed in the church by a jew with an axe. The holy martyr's relics were found to be incorrupt and he was glorified in 2009.
