“I once met a young archimandrite wearing a laymen’s clothing at the airport. He was going abroad and introduced himself, "I am Father so-and-so," he said. "Where is your cassock?" was my answer. Of course, I did not bow to him [to receive his blessing].
☦️Saint Paisios

“I am proud of the cassock I wear and consider it more valuable and seemly than every other kind of garment, even than the royal purple robes of kings. I consider myself unworthy to dress in such a modest, honorable and holy garb, which was honored by numberless monastic Saints, monk-martyrs, confessors and Saints. I am saddened and pity those clerics who reject the cassock and who shave their beards.”

Politicians want us to forget about eternity and the salvation of our soul. They want us to be always preoccupied with endless political squabbles. But in any case, the ed thereof is a disgrace, as in politics they cry 'Hosanna!' to you one day and the next day it is 'Crucify him!' Political systems come and go, whereas God's truth is changeless and eternal. They want the Church to change, but the Church never changes because God's truth is changeless.

My child, be careful with this world which is like a theater. For poor and ignoble people on stage in the theater wear the clothes of kings, tycoons, etc..., and appear to be different from what they really are and fool the audience. But when the show is over and they take off their masks, then their true faces are revealed.

Accurate 👃

“Must you not turn away from them since they are the common disgrace and infection of the whole world? Have they not come to every form of wickedness? Have not all the prophets spent themselves making many and long speeches of accusation against them? What tragedy, what manner of lawlessness have they not eclipsed by their blood-guiltiness? They sacrificed their own sons and daughters to demons. They refused to recognize nature, they forgot the pangs, of birth, they trod underfoot the rearing of their children, they overturned from their foundations the laws of kingship, they became more savage than any wild beast. What deed of theirs should strike us with greater astonishment? Their ungodliness or their cruelty or their inhumanity? That they sacrificed their children or that they sacrificed them to demons?”

The only person who is free is the one who lives for Christ.
☦️Saint John Chrysostomos

In truth there is only one freedom – the holy freedom of Christ, whereby He freed us from sin, from evil, from the devil. It binds us to God. All other freedoms are illusory, false, that is to say, they are all, in fact, slavery.
☦️Saint Justin Popovich

Freedom doesn't mean that I do what I want, because many times by doing what we want, we do the will of the devil. Freedom is seen in man's discernment, in his ability to choose between good and evil. Man ought to be mindful of the fact that he can live freely only in truth, and that there is much delusion in this world — against which he needs to guard himself.

🇷🇺☦️ Russian Orthodox priest, Father Nicholas Kotelnikov (66 years of age) has been violently murdered in the Muslim-majority city of Derbent (Russian Caucuses, Dagestan).

The extremists slew the Orthodox priest in the Church itself, cutting his throat.

The Orthodox Christian church guard was armed with a gas pistol, but was not able to stop the intruders and was also killed during the invasion of another Orthodox Church in the next door city of Mahachkala.

Dagestan, the former territory of southern Khazaria & Avaria, is one of the least Orthodox Christian regions in all of Russia:
-20 Orthodox Churches
-1,700 Muslim mosques
- 3 Synagogues (Talmudic mountain variety)

Father Nicholas served as an Orthodox priest for 40 years, had 3 children and 6 grandchildren.

I believe we have just witnessed the suffering of yet another Martyr, or two, for our Lord Jesus Christ.
Memory Eternal Fr Nicholas 🙏🏼

Sacred Scripture itself confirms that sulfur evokes the stench of the flesh, as it speaks of the rain of fire and sulfur poured upon Sοбом by the Lord. He had decided to punish Sοбом for the crimes of the flesh, and the very type of punishment he chose emphasized the shame of that crime. For sulfur stinks, and fire burns. So it was just that Sοбомιτεs, burning with perverse desires arising from the flesh like stench, should perish by fire and sulfur so that through this just punishment they would realize the evil they had committed, led by a perverse desire.

In the future Judgment, the condition of each person will be revealed in an instant, and each person on his own will proceed to where he belongs. Each person will recognize, as if on a television screen, his own wretchedness, as well as the spiritual condition of others. He will reflect himself upon the other, and he will bow his head, and proceed to the place where he belongs. For example, a daughter-in-law who sat comfortably with her legs crossed in front of her mother-in-law, who with a broken leg took care of the grandchild, will not be able to say, “My Christ, why are you putting my mother-in-law into Paradise without including me?” because that scene will come before her to condemn her. She will remember her mother-in-law who stood with her broken leg in order to take care of her grandchild and she will be too ashamed to go into Paradise — but there will be not place for her there, anyway.

THE POWER OF THE PROSKOMIDIA PRAYERS

There was a young couple in Greece in the 1940s. They had only been married for 6 months.

The young man was a miner, and there was a terrible accident in the mine. Everyone got out, except him. Back then they did not have the equipment to be able to excavate quickly.

So the foreman went to the young bride & told her “We are very sorry. But by the time we dig through, it will probably take about a month, and your husband will definitely be dead by then. The area is so small…no food, no light, no water. Nothing to help him survive.”

So she did what a good wife would do. She did the σαράντα-Λειτουργo, where she had the priest serve Liturgies for 40 days for her husband’s soul. And every day she would go to church and she would light a candle for her husband. And she would give a Phosphora and wine to the priest. This went on for 37 days. And the end of the 37th Liturgy, an old woman came to the church from a village about a day and a half away, and said to the priest, “Father, we need you. We don’t have a priest and someone is about to die.”

So the priest turned to the young bride and told her, “I’m sorry. We are going to have to stop at 37 days. There is an emergency I have to attend to & I will need to leave.”

Well, on the 40th day, the mine workers broke through the collapsed mine. And they discovered the young man still alive! Everybody was amazed! “How can you still be living?” The young man said, “Brothers, I cannot explain it. But at a certain time in the morning I received a candle, some wine & some bread. But during the last 3 days none of those things happened & I felt that as if I was going to die.”

The prayers of the Church saved him….The Proskomidia prayers. And that old woman…that was the Devil. He could see what was going on, and he did not want that young man to live.

Prayer has great power.

The most powerful prayer is the Proskomedia. When the priest takes a piece of the offered bread, the Prosforo, puts it on the paten….and that piece represents us.

This seems like a very clear attack on our monasteries. Geronta Ephraim left a rule that services in his monasteries would until the end of time be in Greek. This is for very good reason. I personally believe that the growth Orthodoxy has seen the last few years in this country is not the flourishing of Orthodoxy here that was prophesied. That time hasn’t arrived yet. I feel strongly that many of the converts of the last few years came to Orthodoxy for the wrong rieasons and don’t have an Orthodox fronima. If they did, the language of the parish/monastery wouldn’t even be a topic of conversation. People today are trying to change the Church. The Church cannot be changed. It is perfect as it is. The Greek language that the Bible and our Divine Liturgy was written in was/is perfect. This doesn’t mean that salvation is exclusive to Greeks. Quite the opposite is true. Fr. Josiah is wrong here. Very wrong. We are all human and wrong at times. It’s ok. Saint Paisios explains it best:

"The Greek tongue has within it the fiery Tongues of Holy Pentecost! No other language can render so adequately the dogmas of the faith. This is why the Good Lord even provided for the Old Testament to be translated into Greek by the Seventy (Septuagint), and for the New Testament to be first written in Greek. Anyone seeking to study the Christian doctrine without the knowledge of Ancient Greek is very likely to fall into serious error. And here, we have abolished the teaching of Ancient Greek in our schools! Soon we'll have Germans teaching Ancient Greek at our universities. That's what it will probably take for some people that realize the value of this language. But I suppose, unless they are embarrassed, they will not realize what they have done. Then they will say, "Can you believe that the church has been preserving and using ancient Greek all along!"

Looks like an interesting read:

"The Invention of the Jewish People" by Shlomo Sand is a controversial and thought-provoking book that challenges traditional narratives about Jewish identity and history. Sand, a historian at Tel Aviv University, argues that many of the common beliefs about the origins and continuity of the Jewish people are modern inventions.
Here are ten key lessons and insights from the book:
1. The Myth of a Homogeneous Jewish People: Sand argues that the concept of a singular, homogeneous Jewish people with a common origin is a modern invention. He suggests that Jewish identity has always been diverse, with various groups converting to Judaism throughout history.
2. The Khazar Hypothesis: One of Sand’s most contentious points is the revival of the Khazar hypothesis, which posits that the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe are largely descended from the Khazars, a Turkic people who converted to Judaism in the 8th or 9th century. This challenges the traditional belief in a direct descent from the ancient Israelites.
3. The Role of Conversion: Sand emphasizes the significant role that conversion played in the spread of Judaism. He argues that large-scale conversions in the ancient world created diverse Jewish communities, which undermines the idea of a pure, ethnically distinct Jewish lineage.
4. Invented Traditions: Sand contends that many Jewish traditions and narratives, particularly those that emphasize a continuous and unbroken lineage from ancient Israel, were constructed in the modern era, particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries, to serve nationalist purposes.
5. The Exile Myth: Sand challenges the widely held belief in a mass Jewish exile after the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE. He argues that there is little historical evidence for a large-scale forced displacement and that many Jews remained in the region or migrated voluntarily over time.
6. Nationalism and Identity: The book explores how Jewish nationalism, particularly Zionism, influenced the construction of Jewish historical narratives. Sand suggests that the desire to create a cohesive national identity led to the reinforcement of certain myths and the suppression of alternative histories.
7. Historiography and Political Agendas: Sand critiques the historiographical methods used to study Jewish history, arguing that many historians have been influenced by political agendas. He calls for a more critical and nuanced approach to understanding the past.
8. Cultural and Religious Plurality: Sand highlights the cultural and religious plurality within Jewish communities throughout history. He points out that Jewish practices and beliefs have varied widely across different regions and periods.
9. The Role of Memory and Myth: The book examines the powerful role of memory and myth in shaping collective identities. Sand argues that historical myths can have a profound impact on contemporary politics and social cohesion.
10. Reimagining Jewish Identity: Ultimately, Sand calls for a reimagining of Jewish identity that embraces its historical complexity and diversity. He advocates for an understanding of Jewishness that is less focused on ethnic purity and more on cultural and religious pluralism.
"The Invention of the Jewish People" by Shlomo Sand offers a provocative and challenging perspective on Jewish history and identity. By questioning long-held beliefs and examining the political and ideological motivations behind historical narratives, Sand encourages readers to critically engage with the past and reconsider the foundations of collective identity.
