Hilarion of Optina

Rodion Nikitich Ponomaryov, (April 8, 1805, village of Klyuchi, Novokhopersky Uyezd, Voronezh Governorate — September 18, 1873, Optina Hermitage) - hieroschemamonk of Russian Orthodox Church.
One of the most zealous defenders and preachers of the Orthodox faith.

We should try to have a good opinion of people. Only God knows the heart, but we can't judge them accurately.

You understand that if you reconcile your own heart to the one who is angry with you, the Lord will also reconcile his heart to you.

Seraphim of Sarov

(30 July [O.S. 19 July] 1754 or 1759 – 14 January [O.S. 2 January] 1833)
Born Prókhor Isídorovich Moshnín (Mashnín)  is one of the most renowned Russian saints.
He taught that the purpose of the Christian life was to receive the Holy Spirit.

Reading of the word of God should be performed in solitude, in order that the whole mind of the reader might be plunged into the truths of the Holy Scripture, and that from this he might receive warmth, which in solitude produces tears; from these a man is wholly warmed and is filled with spiritual gifts, which rejoice the mind and heart more than any word.

John of Kronstadt

Ivan Ilyich Sergiyev
(31 October [O.S. 19 October] 1829 – 2 January 1909 [O.S. 20 December 1908]) was a Russian Orthodox archpriest and a member of the Most Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church. He was known for his mass confessions, numerous miracles, and charitable work.

Praying, adhere to the rule that it is better to say five words from the heart than ten thousand words with the tongue. When you notice that your heart is cold and prays reluctantly, stop, warm your heart with some living image, for example, of your spiritual misery and blindness, or an image of the great, minute-by-minute blessings of God to you and to the human race, especially to Christians, and then pray slowly, with a warm feeling; even if you do not manage to read all the prayers in time, there is no harm, and you will receive incomparably more benefit from warm and unhurried prayer than if you had read all the prayers, but hastily, without sympathy.

Do some needlework, for this also drives away evil thoughts. This was given to a great saint by an angel.
Memorize something from the Scriptures, focusing your mind on it, and this also prevents the demons from entering in your lives.
This is a suggestion from the holy fathers.

St.Tikhon of Zadonsk

Timofey Savelyevich Sokolov (1724, Novgorod region –1783, Zadonskiy Nativity Virgin Monastery). Orthodox bishop and spiritual writer whom the Orthodox Church glorified (canonized) as a saint in 1861.
He cared about education,  opened many schools.

Hope for everything except God is vain; rotten is the support of every person, and a false shield of all created things. Therefore, leaving everything, let us flee to our reliable and invincible shield.
"It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. Better is it to trust in the Lord than to trust in princes" (Psalm 118:8, 9). Let some protect themselves by cunning and cunningly devised words, others by gold, silver, and their other treasures, others by rank - their hope will deceive them. We will defend ourselves in the name of the Lord and will not be ashamed. Look, Christian, be only God's, and the name of the Lord will protect you from all the attacks of the enemy.

You are constantly getting out of the right track. Try to immediately direct and put yourself back on the right track: if you get angry, suppress your anger; if you have a bad thought, reproach yourself, and so on.
Oh, how desirable such inner work is! It allows you to cope with all kinds of life situations, keeps you in a cheerful mood, and gives you a boost of physical strength, preventing and eliminating any nervous disorders, depression, etc.

He was the founder of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius near Moscow, what is now the most venerated monastic house in Russia.

Take heed to yourselves, brethren, I pray you, above all else, have fear of God and purity of heart and body, and love that is not hypocritical; and in addition to these, have charity and humility with meekness, fasting, and prayer. Eat and drink in moderation; do not love honor and glory, but above all else, beware and remember the hour of death and the Second Coming.

Sergei (Sergius) Alekseevich Mechev
(September (17) 30, 1892, Moscow - January 6, 1942, Yaroslavl) - archpriest, fourth child of Archpriest Alexei Mechev, saint of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Throughout his life, Saint Sergiy Mechev was a good shepherd to his flock, a beloved head of a church parish, and also an outstanding and unwavering witness of Christ who remained steadfast in his faith, ultimately rising to the highest form of service to Him, the feat of martyrdom.

Conscience is nothing other than a natural or inherent law; therefore, conscience is similar to the law of God. For what the law of God teaches, conscience also teaches.
A man's conscience is like an alarm clock. If the alarm goes off and you get up knowing that you have to go to church, then you will always hear it, but if you don't get up right away, saying ,"I'll just lie for a while," eventually, you won't wake up from the call...

Silouan of Athos is famous for his example of humility and spiritual experience.

If we were humble, the Lord would give us to see paradise every day. But it is a misfortune that we are not humble, and therefore it is given to us to wage war with ourselves; to him who conquers himself, the Lord gives for humility and labor His Holy help.

He was a humble ascetic and man of prayer, who patiently and courageously bore the cross of physical illnesses throughout his life. He contributed in every way to the work of eldership in the skete, which he led for 14 years.

Every person, no matter what his life, is given his own cross by God, which everyone must bear with childlike obedience to the Heavenly Father; since it does not become easier from pusillanimity cowardic and impatience.

The chief disease which afflicts our time is the uncontrollable passion for pleasure, which spreads with each passing year and day. Everyone wants to live well and only enjoy themselves...
If you, Christian parents, want your children to be happy, then try to suppress this irrepressible passion for pleasure in them, teach them to be unpretentious and to be content with their situation. You will only make them happy when you develop in them the spirit that filled the Apostle Paul, who said of himself: "I am satisfied with the habits in which I am"...

Everyone needs a fire of temptations for testing and learning in patience.
Look at things from the point of view of how God's Providence cares for our salvation: for some more, and for others less, opportunities for patience and learning are needed, and for others the time has not yet come...
Temptations are a spiritual fair where many gain and many suffer loss.

Whole our life is a great mystery of God. All circumstances of life, no matter how insignificant they may seem, have enormous significance. We will fully understand the meaning of this life in the next time.
We must treat it carefully, but we leaf through our life like a book, page after page, without realizing what is written there. There is nothing accidental in life, everything is created by the will of the Creator.

Bishop Vasily of Kineshma

Veniamin Sergeyevich Preobrazhensky
(January 7 (19), 1876, Kineshma, Kostroma Province — August 13, 1945, Birilyussy village, Krasnoyarsk Krai) - bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church, Bishop of Ivanovo, and vicar of the Vladimir Diocese.
He was canonized as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church in August 2000.

Compassion and love are the Christian motives of every truly great deed. The greatness of every individual and every deed measured by the extent to which they are imbued with these motives. The longevity of a great deed is also largely dependent on this. A deed that aims to satisfy the petty vanity of its author is never lasting, and despite its sometimes dazzling successes, it soon crumbles like a brightly flaming rocket, leaving only the soot and smoke of a smoking shell.

Dmitry Alexandrovich Brianchaninov
(February 15, 1807-April 30 [May 13], 1867) stands out as one of the greatest patristic writers of the nineteenth century. This great Russian saint left to Orthodox Christians a compass by which we can check our direction as we traverse the complex path of spiritual life, to avoid the dark forests and pitfalls of spiritual delusion and pride.

Abstaining from gratifying the fleshly lusts brings purity to the mind, and the mind's view of the earth and all things earthly changes: it sees things that it had not seen before.
From here, its thoughts begin to ascend to eternity.

Our benefit isn't in the quantity of words, but in the quality. Sometimes you say a lot, but there's nothing to listen to, and at other times you hear just one word, and it stays in your memory for a lifetime.

Rather than think much and talk to yourself, it will be better to say a little: don't forsake me, O Lord my God, don't turn away from me...
And in this way we must act in every sorrow, and in sickness, and in poverty, and in distress, and in perplexity, and in all troubles, so that we may think less, and often turn to Christ our God and to His Most Pure Mother with a prayer, though brief.…

Où est l’Église? ☦️
