Righteous Artemius of Verkola
Artemius was born in 1532 in the village of Dvina Verkola. The son of pious Russian peasants, Cosmas and Apollinaria, Artemius was a child who was courageous, meek and diligent in every good deed. Even at the age of five, he was different from other children in his rare piety. When Artemius was twelve years old, he went with his father through a great forest where they were taken by surprise by a thunderstorm. A clap of thunder broke right over their heads, and the child Artemius fell dead. His grieving father, unable to dig a grave, covered the boy's body with branches and journeyed home. Twenty-eight years later, the village reader saw an unearthly light in the forest. Upon approaching the light, he found the body of Artemius intact and incorrupt. Many were healed of illness as soon as they touched the body of Saint Artemius. A monastery was built in the village, called the Verkola. In 1918, the Bolsheviks chopped his holy relics into pieces and threw them in a well.

If I was forced for some reason to be in Romania, in the Romanian Church, I would do what the Romanian Chruch does. When your Romanian you do what the Romanians do. Its more then just the way you think, its the rhythm of your life. This is tradition vs conservatism - we are against abortion, we are against gay marriage - yes, yes, yes, this is all true, but its more then that - its more then just the way you think. Its the rhythm of your life, and the rhythm of life has been established in the local Churches. I don't know what part of the rhythm of life of America, you can live in order to be a traditional American Orthodox... you can, you can do it, but sometimes it comes across as comical - it doesn't matter if you have southern food on Pascha, or Russia, or Greek - not what I'm talking about - its something much deeper. You have to be able to discern this yourself, you have to be able to understand yourself - what do you consider traditional you don't like. America has its own way of thinking about things, and everybody that is born and raised here has been infected here - its been said that every revolt, [every disaster] in society is because of the negation of hierarchy, Americans don't like hierarchy by nature, they want to be independent. You bring it into Orthodoxy, its disastrous - its very disastrous. Many other things... but this is part of traditionalism. You must be conservative to be Orthodox, but really need to be traditional to - and find what it is. You aren't going to lose your identity by adopting Greek customers, or Russian customs, or Romanian customers - Americans are very afraid - first they have a problem finding out who they are, next they are afraid they are going to lose it - be a little more flexible about these things, get into the practice, the pious practice - that's where the spiritual life is transferred.
