The original plaster allegorical figure of Night has been in the Agen Museum of Fine Arts since 1913, but has been considered lost since 1972. The first marble version of the model, 1.9 m high, was commissioned by Sicard from the French government in 1905 for the Parc Saint-Cloud.
The sculpture shown is a smaller version, and to date it is the only known example of this size. The anatomy is exactly the same as the aforementioned life-size Sicard marble, but the drapery is different: the figure is covered from the waist down, while the sculpture commissioned for the gardens of Saint-Cloud is completely naked. The figure stands in a sensual pose that is reminiscent of Michelangelo's composition, in particular his allegorical figure of the Night in the tomb of Giuliano de' Medici in Florence, which similarly raises one hand to its forehead.
