This sort of nanny state legislation seeking to dictate specific behaviors inevitably infantilizes a population. It shouldn't be the government's responsibility to force individuals to abstain from behaviors that only harm themselves, it should be a personal responsibility.

The sort of drugs that should be illegal or restricted are those that cause individuals to act out on their surroundings in damaging or negative ways that will potentially harm other people. The government coming in and outlawing something like tobacco is obviously an overreach of power.

Such needlessly authoritarian acts like this will always precede social instability and coincide with other draconian legislation. Either the population will yield to such legislation and become increasingly subdued and degraded by that submission, or they will eventually act out against such abuse of power.

I guess this is part of the consequences of having bloated and inefficient social programs that are difficult to pay for and maintain. Canada chose to introduce assisted suicide to cope with the insufficiency in the medical system and now the UK is introducing even more legislation to reduce personal freedom for basically the same reason.

I learned recently that raccoons are one of the most intelligent animals on the planet. Apparently they can pick locks. No that's not a joke.

This racoon appears to be self aware, he is excited about what he created.

We live with a mythology that the natural system is fundamentally lower than us, subjugated by us, and ours to manipulate at will. I think t's important that we recognize that we are this racoon, just a little smarter.

You look at his face and you can see your own emotions mirrored in an animal that is completely detached from the human experience. You can practically read his mind.

The painting means something to him. He knows he created it. He is excited by this new discovery. He is using introspection on a basic level, viewing himself as the creator, experiencing pride and satisfaction in that creation.

As humans we have a self-righteous tendency to believe in our personal experience as the origin of meaning. As if meaning isn't reflected in every facet of the universe.

I'm a little annoyed about how suddenly everyone is noticing when genocide happens.

That's great and all, don't get me wrong, it's certainly good that people are looking at what Israel is doing a calling it what it is.

I just wish people were less selective about when they notice this sort of atrocity. Radio silence for 20 years while the US invades several countries and kills millions. Total dismissal of China currently operating camps for various ethnic groups. Nobody cares at all.

I guess it just bothers me when people aren't consistent.
