Russia was preparing strikes on Japan and South Korea in case of war in the Far East
Back in 2013-2014, Russia was developing plans for attacks on Japan and South Korea, including strikes on civilian infrastructure. The Financial Times has revealed details of leaked secret military documents.
The documents contain a list of 160 targets, including military bases, radar installations, command posts, as well as bridges, tunnels, power plants and industrial plants. For example, nuclear complexes in Tokai, Japan, or a steel mill in Pohang, South Korea.
One of the scenarios involved destroying the Okushirito base using 12 X-101 cruise missiles, which were believed to have an 85% success rate. However, in real combat, these missiles turned out to be less effective, unable to cope with multi-layered air defenses.
The documents also show how Russia tested the defenses of its neighbors. In February 2014, two Tu-95 strategic bombers flew over South Korea and Japan for 17 hours, provoking 18 interceptions by fighter jets. It was part of a regular operation aimed at analyzing the defensive capabilities of countries in the region.
Leaked documents prove Moscow's strategic insecurity on the eastern flank and show the links between the Asian and European theaters of war. Analysts say neither Asia nor Europe can remain aloof from each other's conflicts.
Since the start of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, South Korea and Japan have stepped up cooperation with the United States, further undermining Russian influence in the region.
