About diverting to Aktau, Kazahstan I personally doubt that crew was pushed for it. But again it is hard to prove for now. I think flying to Aktau was the right decision in this case. They could manoeuvre there over flat terrain and crash landed saving at least part of passengers. In Caucasus mountains it would be 100% fatal crash with no survivors.
And also now we have the evidence that plane was shot down. If it had crashed in Russia no one would have shared images of the shrapnelled plane.

💭 🤔 🇪🇪  Russia may try to seize part of Estonia and is already jamming satellite navigation in the border city of Narva, – Politico

The main thing from the article:

🟠 Russians steal navigation buoys and launch reconnaissance drones;
🟠 Russia will seize eastern Estonia, justifying this by "its large population of ethnic Russians";
🟠 Next, according to the Russian plan, is to "force NATO to start a global war in response. The lack of a reaction will show that NATO's Article 5 on collective defense makes no sense".

Russia Rejects Any Revision of Conditions for Negotiations with Ukraine – ISW

Russian Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko emphasized that Russia would not back down "one iota" from its demands. In Istanbul, Russia insisted that Ukraine adopt a neutral status, barring NATO membership. Another demand was to limit Ukraine's armed forces to 85,000 personnel, similar to restrictions imposed on Germany by the Treaty of Versailles after World War I.

According to ISW analysts, the increased rhetoric from Russian officials reflects Putin's confidence in achieving victory over Ukraine.

"This remains unchanged despite the significant defeats suffered by the Russian army since then," the report states.

Finnish police considers a “Russian connection” in the case of damage to the Estlink 2 power cable

The Estlink 2 cable, with a capacity of 658 MW, running between Estonia and Finland, was disconnected as a result of an accident on December 25. Another line, Estlink 1, continues to operate between the two countries, but its capacity is only 358 MW.

Fingrid, the company responsible for the Finnish electricity grid, reported that two ships were near the cable at the time of the incident, but did not specify their identity. In turn, the MarineTraffic service, which tracks maritime traffic, reported that one of the vessels (Xin Xin Tian 2) was a container ship flying the Hong Kong flag, and the Swedish Aftonbladet added that the second vessel (the Eagle S tanker) was registered under the Cook Islands flag, was sailing from St. Petersburg to Egypt and is part of Russia's shadow fleet. At the time the cable damage was discovered, the tanker clearly slowed down.

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said that the malfunction would not affect the country's electricity supply. However, the police, in cooperation with border guards and other services, have launched an investigation into the incident, including considering the version of vandalism.

Plane in Aktau could have been shot down by Russian missile over Grozny - Euronews, citing sources in the Azerbaijani government

A surface-to-air missile from the Russian Pantsir-S air defense system could have been fired over Grozny due to the threat of a drone attack, the publication's sources said. Its fragments hit passengers and flight attendants.

Sources also told Euronews that the damaged plane was not allowed to land at any Russian airport, despite the pilots' requests for an emergency landing. Therefore, it was ordered to fly across the Caspian Sea towards Aktau in Kazakhstan.

A total of 38 people died in the crash of the Azerbaijan Airlines plane, said Kazakh Transport Minister Marat Karabayev. Including seven Russians, 23 Azerbaijani citizens and six Kazakh citizens.

Demand for military workers in the West has risen to a record high since the Cold War, writes the Financial Times.

According to the FT, global military spending has reached a record $2.443 trillion. Due to the increase in orders, defense companies in the US and Europe are looking for tens of thousands of new employees, and the hiring rate has increased to Cold War levels.

The publication studied the plans of 20 large and medium-sized defense and aerospace companies in the US and Europe and found out that they are planning to hire tens of thousands of people this year. For example, the three largest US defense contractors - Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics - have about 6,000 vacancies, and another ten companies intend to increase the number of employees by almost 10%.

“This is the most intense period for the defense sector since the end of the Cold War, the volume of orders has grown significantly in a relatively short period of time,” said Ian Pai, CEO of the European Aerospace and Defense Industries Association.

Companies are looking for employees of all skill levels, from trainees to managers, engineers, software developers and cybersecurity analysts, as well as welders and mechanics.

According to Antonio Liotti, head of human resources at the Italian engineering holding Leonardo, the search for new employees is now “even more intense than during previous conflicts, for example in Iraq or Afghanistan.”

The Norwegian-Finnish ammunition manufacturer Nammo has increased its headcount by 15% since 2021, to 3,100 in 2023, and by the end of 2030, the figure could double. Last week, Germany’s Rheinmetall signed an agreement with tire manufacturer Continental AG, according to which hundreds of people will be hired at the military equipment manufacturer. France’s Thales, which produces the Starstreak MANPADS, has hired 9,000 people over the past three years, and now has 81,000 employees.
