Former “People’s Governor of Donbas” Pavel Gubarev stated that the “SMO” (Special Military Operation) should never have been started. According to him, by the fourth year of the Great Patriotic War, “our grandfathers were beating the Germans, just beating them and pushing them back.”
“And we’re not beating anyone, not pushing anyone,” he said.

He also raised questions about the “goals of the SMO.”
“It’s not even clear what [the authorities] want… Do we need the territories for what? Who are we going to populate them with — Tajiks and Uzbeks? Or do we need to defeat Ukraine, to force it to capitulate? Then other questions arise. Why aren’t we striking supply routes, decision-making centers? Why aren’t we turning everything to dust?” he said.
He concluded by saying that the Russian authorities aren’t concerned about losses in the war:
“We’re taking losses, and no one even looks back at them. Why? Well, because the elite, they’re the ones holding the assets. They get everything. They’re like feudal nobility here. The most prominent petal on this beautiful feudal tree is the leadership in Chechnya — Kadyrov and his successor Adam,” he added.
This is not the first time Gubarev has made bold statements. Previously, the “veteran of the Russian Spring” criticized the “Putin regime,” which he claimed is based on fear. He estimated Russia’s losses at one million people and effectively called on the military to revolt if the war were to be frozen.
