*Peasants report intense shootings in the forests of Macomia*
The population of Macomia, in the Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, yesterday reported intense shootings and fear in the forests of the administrative post of Mucojo, 40 kilometers from the district headquarters, attacked two weeks ago.
The situation mainly affects peasants in the production areas of Nambine and Namigure, just over 10 kilometers from Mucojo, who, since the invasion by around a hundred insurgents of the main town of Macomia, have been following shootings in those forests on a daily basis.
"It's not easy, every day we see shootings in the Mucojo area. I don't have bags to bag the corn quickly, I don't know if I'll be able to get it all out", Dorteia Jerónimo, 40 years old, peasant and mother, told Lusa of four children.
The people do not know the origin of the intense and continuous shootings, but they are afraid of having to leave the countryside. "It's a possibility, we're scared, people don't know if it's our Defense and Security Forces or if it's the rebels, the truth is that there were shootings almost every day, there in Mucojo", said another peasant.
The administrative post of Mucojo, in Macomia, is an area considered of capital importance for the district and the province of Cabo Delgado, given its economic potential characterized mainly by fishing.
*Increase in the number of displaced people*
The attack by insurgent groups on the village of Macomia, one of the largest in recent months in northern Mozambique, the scene of an armed insurgency, caused almost 1,500 people to be displaced from May 10 to 14, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), in addition reports from the population about looting and looting from stores and other NGOs.
