Romania is preparing for a “Super Election” – Presidential vote on Nov 25 & Parliamentary vote on Dec 1.

The country is currently led by the unlikely coalition of the Social Democratic Party (left) and the National Liberal Party (right), but for the election they are running separately. These “establishment” parties are both pro-European, and will likely receive a sizeable portion of the votes. In general, most political actors in Romania are different flavors of Euroatlantic integration supporters.

However, in recent years, several new players emerged on the scene that have Russian sympathies. Despite the proximity to Ukraine and frequent cases of Moscow’s drones flying into Romania, these pro-Russian candidates are strong contenders in both the Presidential and the Parliamentary race.

There are at least two parties vying for Parliament seats and one Presidential candidate that have Russian ties:

▪️George Simion and his far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) party. A football hooligan turned politician emerged onto the scene in 2020, and is explicitly pro-Russian. He repeats Kremlin narratives and advocates for the “reunification” of Romania with Moldova, as well as Ukrainian lands where Romanian minorities live. He is declared “persona non-grata” in both Ukraine and Moldova because of his politics and suspected ties to Russia, which he denies.
Simion is currently polling 4th in the Presidential race at 11%; however, given the unpredictability of the results, he may proceed to the second round of the elections. His AUR party has rapidly risen in the polls since September. It’s projected to receive 21% of the vote, behind only the Social Democrats.

▪️The SOS party and its leader Diana Șoșoacă are an off-shoot of the AUR party with an even more radical stance. Șoșoacă has long advocated for closer relations with Moscow, met with Russian ambassador to Bucharest, and often makes anti-Western statements. On this platform, she managed to get a seat in the European Parliament this summer – however, she has since received a 7-day suspension in Brussels due to her fascist, antisemitic rhetoric, and may be recalled.
She is trying to make a comeback in domestic politics. Initially, Șoșoacă registered for the Presidential race, and was polling at about 10% - however, the Constitutional Court somewhat controversially banned her from participation, as she has systematically undermined Romania’s constitution and presents a risk to the country’s democracy and security. She has refocused her efforts on the parliamentary election; her party SOS is currently projected to receive 7% of the vote.

Earlier this week, Romanian media Digi24 reported that Russia was working to influence the Romanian elections through intermediaries, such as organizations, affiliated or Russian-funded entities, possibly also through candidates for President. Though several investigations are underway, and indeed some inauthentic activity on social media was identified, the ruling government denies that any foreign interference activities have taken place.

This election will be one to watch in the coming weeks.

❗️A maritime traffic C-Lion1 cable running from Santahamina, Finland to Rostock, Germany, has been cut - IS media.

Data traffic connections in the submarine cable are down.

It is unclear whether the damage is the result of sabotage or, say, weather conditions.

C-Lion1 cable was introduced in 2016. The cable is nearly 1,200 kilometres long and is buried at a depth of about three feet. The cable runs near the Nord Stream gas pipeline.

The aftermath of the Russian strike on Odesa.

"These are not random strikes - these are telling strikes. After the calls and meetings with Putin, after all the lying gossip in the media about alleged 'holding off' on strikes. Russia demonstrates what it's really interested in: only war. And this signal is worth being heard in all parts of the world, from the halls where members of the G20 group meet, to all the capitals of the world," - President Zelenskyy.

President of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdoğan reportedly intends to present his plan to "freeze" the Russian-Ukrainian war at the G20 Summit in Brazil - Bloomberg, citing sources.

Allegedly, the plan will include the following:

▪️ Ukraine will postpone discussions on NATO membership for at least 10 years;
▪️ Creating a demilitarized zone in eastern Donbas, where Russia has controlled significant territory since 2014; Erdoğan will offer to station international troops there as an additional guarantee and provide Ukraine with military supplies as compensation for agreeing not to join NATO, according to the agency.

The G20 Summit will be held in Rio de Janeiro on Nov. 18-19. The conference will be chaired by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. During the forum, the transfer of the presidency to South Africa will take place. According to Russian media, Putin will not attend the summit "in order not to embarrass Silva due to the ICC warrant." Lavrov will be there instead.

As I've said repeatedly, the most important for Ukraine are real and effective security guarantees that will enable lasting, sustainable peace.

Le Figaro has removed from the article a sentence about France and the United Kingdom allowing SCALP and Storm Shadow missiles to hit Russia's territory. It was reported yesterday.

Today, this line has disappeared from the material. The text has only information of other media that US President Joe Biden allowed Kyiv to use ATACMS missiles.

There are no official comments on this yet.

Anti-war rallies organized by the Russian opposition took place in several cities across Europe—from Lisbon to Vilnius and Batumi.

The largest turnout was in Berlin, where around 1500–2000 people attended (some estimate it was as many as 6000–7000).

Protesters called for the withdrawal of troops from Ukraine, freedom for political prisoners, and a trial for the Russian dictator.

These are strong slogans. However, it would be more accurate to replace “Putin’s war” with “Russia’s war” and to remember that the AFU are the ones leading the resistance against the terrorists.

I believe that among these protesters, there were undoubtedly people who genuinely hate war, care deeply about Ukraine, and want to help.

Unfortunately the truth is that demonstrations and marches do not have any impact on the war right now. Especially not demonstrations and marches in Berlin that attempt to influence the authorities in the Kremlin.

Real help that can actually make a difference right now is concrete support for the AFU. We are in a crucial moment in the war. Support the people who, for the third year now, are in the trenches with weapons in their hands, defending their families from Russia.

Meanwhile, several days ago, information appeared that Russia may be planning to step up its sabotage campaign by damaging undersea Internet cables.

Moscow’s special services have been hard at work in Western countries. We have seen numerous examples of their operations in recent months: from attempts to send explosives via DHL, to hacking European satellites and transmitting Russian propaganda.

The recent activity and rhetoric of Kremlin officials suggests another special op may be in the works.

Back in September, US intelligence detected increased Russian military activity around key undersea cables. CNN’s sources suspected that Russia was planning to sabotage “critical communications infrastructure.”

Everything was silent for two months, but this week, several things happened in quick succession that should set off warning bells:

▪️Newsweek broke the story that a Russian spy ship has been “loitering” off the coasts of Norway for about a month. Naval analysts think the ship is likely trying to locate undersea cables.

▪️Nikolai Patrushev, key aide to Vladimir Putin, issued an unsubstantiated warning that US and UK had the capacity and were planning to attack undersea fiber optic cables.

▪️On Friday, an internal communique from the Russian Central Bank was leaked in the media. The document asks the CB’s subsidiaries to prepare for an exercise " disconnecting access to the foreign segment of the 'Internet' network in certain regions."

It increasingly looks like a classic Russian “false flag” operation is in the works. They pre-emptively blame Western countries for plotting to cut the cables, while making overt preparations for doing it themselves.

"The option of freezing the line of combat contact is unacceptable for Russia." - Peskov.

He added that the conditions formulated by Putin continue to be relevant and they are the ones that need to be met to stop the war.

By the way, one of the factors why Russia wants to seize as much land as possible is the desire of the Kremlin elite to make themselves richer by "restoring new territories."

The "restoration" of Mariupol was well developed. A large budget was allocated, most of which was stolen, and the buildings that were built were sold to Russians who moved to the Ukrainian resort city.

The territories that Putin wants are attractive and can be used to make a lot of money after the "freezing".

That is why the Kremlin elites will push for the most favorable conditions for themselves.

Since the beginning of this war, Romania has been one of the biggest and most ardent Ukraine supporters.

▪️Bucharest became one of Ukraine’s security partners, by signing a 10-year bilateral agreement. It bolstered cooperation between our countries, especially in the security of the Black Sea region and its demining, intelligence and counterintelligence, cybersecurity, sanctions, and Ukraine's recovery and rebuilding.

▪️Romania has provided weapons crucial to Ukraine’s defense from the invasion: armored personnel carriers, multiple rocket launchers, howitzers, artillery shells, grenade launchers, machine guns, and much more. They also lent us their Patriot complex to protect our skies.

▪️Ukrainian fighter pilots and marines are getting advanced training in Romania to further improve Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

▪️Romania accepted and continues to support and give shelter to over 170 000 Ukrainian refugees.

▪️The Romanian Black Sea port of Constanta was key in maintaining global food security and making Ukrainian grain shipments, when other routes were blocked by Russia.

Thank you for all your support, Romania!🇷🇴🇺🇦
As you prepare for two very important elections, I am hopeful that after the votes are in, our ties and mutual cooperation will only continue to deepen.
