Compared to their first album, it’s great to hear how ALTESIA further developed as musicians and composers, now offering more tempo, heaviness, and new stylistic elements, like background orchestration, death metal vibes or jazzy moments.The vocals convince again with amazing melodies, just would have deserved more support by the mixing at some points.

There’s a modern influence from bands like Meshuggah and Gojira, although these are not overtly referenced, and seem to just add a certain power to some of the riffs. Finally, we get a good portion of dissonant death metal – think of a band like Ulcerate, for example.

An incredibly musically ambitious album that is executed as well as it is envisioned. 7 years in the making, Holoceno combines progressive sludge metal with elements of avant garde and zeuhl. It contains incredibly creative songwriting, jaw-dropping instrumental solos, and technical musicianship. it genuinely feels like a historical piece of art.

This is extreme metal at its best – passionate, dark and deliciously dramatic and the band’s faultless execution is matched by a production that perfectly realises their dark vision. Essential listening, ‘Barus’ is a masterclass in brutality.

Derev‘s first released track “Futile” was a pleasant surprise: it’s melodic and creative, and it has a fantastic video with a perfectly chosen voice. That one track led me to an interview with the band, and I get to know both them and their planned EP release “Leap of Faith“.

The set showcases the band’s ambient prog rock credentials enhanced with oriental features. Dreamy Pink Floyd like atmospherics are also in evidence as Derev stretch around lush items like “Slipping Down Again”. Soundscapes are vast, enticing and mysteriously absorbing, and musicianship is nothing short of jaw-dropping. Finely-honed song-craft comes into play throughout the set, either bolstered by the muscular riffing of “Turab” and “Futile” or the contemplative nature of “Delayed”, a number stuffed with exciting moments. It all comes as a testament to Derev’s unique musical vision, in addition to the band’s ability to stretch out accordingly.

This debut (mini) album is short, but with a rich variety. It showcases a talented group of musicians who are still exploring a range of linked, but different, sound palettes. I think they could well be onto something, if they can focus their compositions and style with some stronger hooks. Leap Of Faith is a strong opening statement and is a recommended listen for those musical culinary types, who enjoy songs that mix and blend influences from different cultures.

Derev’s technical chops are clear, even on this debut, but in the progressive field this quality can almost be taken as basic. What will perhaps make them stand out is a lyrical seriousness well channelled by the singing.

The whole time and every time I have listened to “Deprivation” I cannot help but think Dawhn are some how Opeth’s Russian fraternal twin. They have so much in common yet are somewhat completely different. The heavy, most death or doom, sections are quite similar yet both bands have their own sound that is just slightly different than the other. Where Opeth’s lighter sections are more influenced by classic/prog rock, Dawhn seem to touch on a bit of folk/traditional. Opeth stretches their ideas out into long, epic songs, while Dawhn can compress the same sentiment into much more compact but no less striking form.

A triumphant shapeless Entity!
To conclude, this Russian band let you amazed with all the elements that they can blend together to sound like one of a kind metal outfit. I think the front cover is a very good example to describe Dawhn´s musical approach. In the picture you can find a shapeless kind of monster/entity and beneath it, there are a bunch of shadows that resemble human figures. That´s how I see their music, a monster that has many forms and we are just powerless and baffled as listeners, sort of empty; ready to receive dark wisdom through their music. Here we go again careless records with another underground gem from mother Russia. Hails!

With Colors II, Between The Buried And Me are revisiting similar musical themes to the album’s predecessor. While there may be nods and throwbacks to the original album for the keen eared listener, such moments are in no way forced, and considering how much content there is crammed into Colors II, a lot of the easter eggs may fly by unnoticed. Regardless, Colors II is in no way dependent on an existing love of Colors. Not only does it stand up on its own, but it is a phenomenal creation of modern progressive metal.

It's twisted, unhinged death metal that takes the best elements of old school death metal, dissonant death metal, technical death metal, even progressive and jazz music. Their death metal is wonderfully concocted, full of unpredictable twists and turns, while retaining ample causticity and drive throughout. There’s just so much happening at all times, it’s both mind-boggling and exhilarating as one attempts to decipher it all over the course of several listens – it’s impossible to fully wrap your head around this fascinating beast of an album at one go.
