Part 2: A Glimpse of Compassion
Part 2 of 3

I first encountered Hamed one day as I was walking out of my house. I saw a young boy rifling through trash bags, even climbing into a dumpster in search of food. The sight of this child, living in such dire conditions, broke my heart. I approached him and gently asked, “What are you doing?” He looked up and nervously asked, “Did I do something wrong?” I replied, “No, I just want to understand why you're digging through the trash.” He told me, “This is how I survive. I do it to support my younger brother.”

I was left speechless. “Where are your parents?” I asked. He replied, “They were killed by a plane that hit our house a few years ago. My youngest brother, who was only three, and my two older sisters, died too. Only me and my brother survived.”

I told him, “Come with me.” He hesitated. “Where?” he asked. I asked, “Are you hungry?” His eyes welled up with tears. “I haven’t eaten in two days. The last food I had, I gave it to my brother so he could eat.”

The virtue of sending ṣalāh (supplications for peace) upon the Prophet ﷺ on Friday begins from sunset on the night of Jumuʿah (Thursday night) and finishes at sunset on the night of Saturday (Friday night). Moreover, sending ṣalāh upon him during the day of Friday is better than during its night (Thursday night).

تفضيل الصلاة على النبي ﷺ في الجمعة يبدأ من غروب الشمس ليلة الجمعة وينتهي بغروبها ليلة السبت، والصلاة عليه ﷺ في نهار الجمعة أفضل من ليلها

Part 3: The Gift of Kindness

We walked to a nearby shawarma restaurant, only to be met with hostile looks. As we reached the entrance, I noticed Hamed had stopped at the door. I said, “Why are you waiting? Let's get you something to eat.” He explained, “They won’t let me in. They said I’m not allowed.” I reassured him, “You’re with me. Don’t worry.” Hesitantly, he stepped inside, his eyes still full of fear that the owner would scold him. I told him, “Order whatever you want.” Before he could do so, he asked, “Can I also order food for my brother?” I smiled and said, “Of course, go ahead.” The joy that lit up his face as he placed an order for himself and his brother was priceless.

I asked him to wash his hands and face, and when he returned, he looked different—clean, no longer stained by dirt from the trash. As he walked back toward me, a man grabbed his arm and angrily demanded, “What are you doing here?” Fear flashed across Hamed’s face. I shouted, “Leave him alone! He’s with me.” The man quickly apologized, “Oh, sorry, Ya Mualim,” and hurried away.

As the food was served, Hamed said, “I need to go back to my brother so we can eat.” I nodded. He looked at me with a glimmer of hope—a reminder that, even in a world full of hardship, there are still good people around. In poverty, the poor are often looked down upon, but our religion teaches us compassion, urging us to help the less fortunate and share what we have.

A Muslim is the brother of another Muslim. He does not oppress him, nor abandon him. (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

One of Thousands: A Story About Hope, Part 1 of 3

Part 1: The Struggle for Survival

At just ten years old, Hamed found himself alone, wandering the streets after a Russian warplane took the lives of his parents. With no family left to care for him, he fought daily to survive. But rather than beg, Hamed chose to make his living by collecting plastic and aluminum cans to sell, hoping to earn a few Turkish Lira to stave off hunger.

He found shelter in a dilapidated apartment building, its broken windows offering no protection from the bitter cold. Its only function was to shield him from the relentless rain. Each day was a struggle against hunger, fear, and an overwhelming sense of loneliness.

Like so many orphaned children, Hamed had no access to education, no protection, and no one to turn to in his darkest moments. Yet, despite the harshness of his life, he never lost hope, and, most importantly, he never lost his faith in Allah.

Walking behind a Janāzah and stepping through a graveyard is a powerful reminder for the one who reflects. You pass by graves of those who were 9, 17, 25 and 90, proof that death spares no one and has no age.

The angel of death comes without warning, indifferent to our plans, our dreams, or how much time we thought we had left.

As you walk, remember that one day, it will be us beneath the soil, shrouded and alone, as voices whisper, ‘I knew that brother…’

This life is but a fleeting shadow, but the Hereafter is eternal. Prepare now, for the grave is not the end—it is the beginning of the true test.”

Death spares no one. Give charity while you have the opportunity. The Angel of Death comes without warning—perform good deeds while you still can. Give charity while you are alive, for when you are in your grave, you will wish you had done more.

Their resolve echoes the eternal truth: ‘Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me.’ (26:62). These are the children of a nation that rises from ashes, fueled by faith that no oppression can extinguish.

Through their steadfastness, Allāh’s victory will emerge, for how many a small group has overcome a large group by permission of Allāh.

To the tyrants of today, you will never be victorious, for you are facing a nation that loves death for Allāh’s sake the way you love life.”
