I’m proud of my little 84TB amateur data fortress I assembled; now to collect the basics of a media bunker.

Most of this I got a couple of years ago when it was reasonable: 3x 8TB M2 drives for my motherboard, and 2x 22TB WD Reds.

I recently got sick and tired of the hard drive clicking from the Sata bays (seriously Windows, you win; I give up) and so I moved them to an external SATA enclosure (went with a Terramaster one) and it instantly solved all my problems with noise. Easy setup, and so far a wonderful product. Connected to a USB 3.2 the damn drives are as fast as they ever were SATA direct.

Then I got to thinking that I have four SATA ports open and I really want to max this beast out before prices go any crazier so I bit the bullet on four Samsung 4TB 870 EVO drives…. ouch. They were as cheap as $200 a few months ago and I just got fleeced for $470 each on them, but everything I’m reading suggests if you don’t own it now, you won’t own it until 2028. And who knows how far our personal freedoms and information will be restricted by then.

I already have a massive collection of roms, old retro video game magazines, and adult stuff. But now with this much space I’ve got my eyes on getting some extremely high bit rate movies and tv seasons. I’m also open to suggestions for what else you’d include in your media bunker.

Canadian Register of Historic Places to Shut Down

Anyone happen to be archiving this in thier efforts already?

Article: https://nationaltrustcanada.ca/online-stories/alarm-as-canadian-register-of-historic-places-to-shut-down

In December 2025, Parks Canada shared with provincial and territorial partners that the Canadian Register of Historic Places (the Register) would be taken down in spring 2026. The existing database is at the end of its technological life. There is no plan for its replacement.

The Register is an online searchable database of historic places in Canada which have been formally recognized for their heritage value by federal, provincial, municipal or territorial authorities. It is administered by Parks Canada and is publicly accessible on its dedicated website historicplaces.ca.

The Register was launched in 2004 as part of the Historic Places Initiative, a collaboration between the federal, provincial and territorial governments to improve protection of the country’s historic sites and to foster a culture of heritage conservation in Canada. The provinces and territories invested millions in creating the Register. Their initial response has been described as ‘shock and disappointment’.

There are approximately 13,500 historic places listed on the register. It is a vital tool for the heritage community and particularly for those jurisdictions who rely on it as the system of record for historic designations.

A download of their listings is being provided to each participating jurisdiction. These downloads, in the form of excel tables, do not include images. Work is underway in some provinces and territories by government officials and heritage organizations to ensure that critical information is saved.

Porn Download Question?

Hi yo. So I'm downloading porn from some official professional pay sites. Not just like some random torrents or reupload sites.

Most of the. Are fairly straight forward. Download the video files in various resolutions and you get an MP4. But sometimes they'll offer the same "content" but in different formats. Like MP4 1080 or WMV 1080 or AV1 4K.

When the claimed resolution is the same, but different video formats or files (however you want to put it) are offered, what's the best choice to go with? For example, I mentioned WMV. I mostly only see this as an option for videos dated around 2010 +/-.

I'm somewhat technically inclined. Like my general mindset is that the larger the file size, the higher the bitrate will be. But I don't know too much about the different file format or containers.

Western Digital - WD Red Pro NAS drives on back order?

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone is experiencing the same issue I am having with Western Digital right now. Since Thanksgiving of 2025, Ive been trying to buy WD Red Pro 24TB drives direct from the Western Digital website. However, every time I go there, the drives are unavailable to purchase - instead of an Add to Cart button, there's a Sales Inquiry button.

I take it this is down to the various AI companies buying up hardware to populate new datacenters. Much like RAM prices have spiked due to demand, we can't buy any from Western Digital because they're supplying drives to the AI companies first.

CRF or ABR (multi-pass) for encoding?

I thought I'd ask here for a more neutral ground to ask which method of encoding is generally regarded as best? In the Handbrake community its nearly 90% favoring CRF, but conversely nearly every well established group uses ABR, so which method of encoding is best to you and why?

Digital Storage in Fireproof Document Safe

I recently purchased this fireproof document safe and while it'll primarily be holding papers, I would like to possibly keep a flashdrive or other digital storage medium in there as an additional backup along with secure cloud storage. Is a conventional thumb drive "safe" (I recognize this is a relative term here) in a fire in a document box like the above, or should I take addittional steps?

[This is sort of adjacent to the topic of this sub but I think it's still relevant -- mods feel free to remove if excessively off topic.\]

Best way to manage 2+ Disks without NAS

Hello guys,

currently I'm having one HDD (in an enclosure) connected to my homelab for media usage. I'm thinking about expanding a little bit (adding 1-2 more disks to expand storage) but also I would also consider one parity disk. What would be the best and budget friendly way to do it? NAS are quite expensive. I was thinking about buying a 4 bay enclosure with JBOD (+ adding snapraid and mergefs), but the reddit community warns about some of enclosures causing data loss.

Thanks in advance for help!

Recipe Dredger: A Dockerized Python tool for mass-archiving structured recipe data from sitemaps to Mealie

I love finding great recipes, but the modern "food blog" experience is becoming a nightmare of life stories just to get to the ingredients list. Worse, I’ve had too many bookmarked favorites vanish behind 404 errors or paywalls years later.

I wanted a middle ground: I want to support the creators **(they need the ad revenue to keep creating)**, but I also need a clean, offline, searchable database of the food I actually cook.

**So I built "Recipe Dredger."**

It’s a Dockerized Python tool that mass-archives recipes from a curated list of 100+ high-quality blogs directly into a self-hosted **Mealie** instance. *(Note: It has experimental support for Tandoor, but I use Mealie).*

**The Philosophy (Import vs. Steal):** My goal isn't to "steal" content, but to build a personal library index. I treat this tool like a super-powered RSS feed or a card catalog.

It aggregates the data so I can search 50,000+ recipes by ingredient locally, but **my wife and I still make a point to click through to the original source/comments when we're actually cooking.**

This workflow ensures the data is preserved locally on my server (fighting link rot), but the creators still get the traffic they deserve when we actually use their work.

**The Technical Specs:**

* **Sitemaps over Crawling:** It parses XML sitemaps to find post URLs efficiently rather than blindly crawling links.
* **Structured Data Only:** It scans specifically for [Schema.org](http://Schema.org) `Recipe` JSON-LD. If it’s not a structured recipe, it skips it.
* **Source Link Retention:** The script explicitly prioritizes the `url` field in the import, ensuring the "View on Site" button in Mealie is front-and-center so you can easily jump to the creator's page.
* **Polite Archiving:** I included strict delays to respect server load. It’s a marathon, not a DDOS.
* **Deduplication:** It checks your local API first to avoid re-downloading what you already have.

**Bonus: Ready for Local AI / RAG** For those running local LLMs (Ollama, etc.), this script effectively creates a pristine, structured dataset of recipes. It is perfect for RAG setups—you can ask your local AI "What can I cook with lentils and heavy cream?" and it can hallucinate answers from *real* recipes **rather than hallucinating glue on your pizza.** :)

**The Result:** I now have a local "Data Lake" of thousands of recipes. I can search "Oxtail" or "Sourdough" and get instant, clean results from curated sources, with the peace of mind that if the blog goes offline tomorrow, the recipe is safe on my server.

**Repo:**[https://github.com/D0rk4ce/mealie-recipe-dredger](https://github.com/D0rk4ce/mealie-recipe-dredger)

I’m actively expanding the source list. If you have reliable sites with good sitemaps that you want to see preserved (and supported!), let me know.

Spent the first weekend of 2026 organizing my digital life.

I have a pile of old hard drives and SSDs from like 2015-2024 that I promised to sort through. I set up a sorting station on the living room floor (easier than hunching over a desk).

I used my Anker SOLIX C1000 Gen 2 to power the external drive docks and my laptop so I didn't have cables trailing across the room. Consolidated everything onto the NAS. 10 years of photos organized. Feels good to start the year with a clean slate.

Is Raid 5 Still A Bad Idea In 2026?

I've generally seen that RAID 5 is discouraged in favor of RAID 6 due to the likelihood of disk errors during rebuild. Most of those sources were pretty old. Is Raid 5 Still A Bad Idea In 2026? Was planning on running 3x Samsung 990 4tb NVME SSDs in RAID 5. Are rebuild errors still an issue? At these prices I can't add any more redundancy. I know to avoid Hardware RAID.

EDIT: The array would be purely for redundancy and contiguous space, NOT as a primary backup solution. I have a separate drive that array would backup to.

Is there an easy way to copy DVD to computer but keep the MENUS and everything intact?

hey guys, quick question about archiving.

I'm trying to copy dvd to computer for a bunch of old collector's edition movies and some interactive kids' discs that my toddlers love.
I tried the standard method everyone recommends. It works great, BUT it strips out everything else. It just dumps a list of 20 different .mkv files (Main movie, featurette 1, featurette 2, etc.). I lost the menus and structure. I have no idea which "title_04.mkv" is the blooper reel and which is the deleted scene.

Is there a modern tool that can just copy the entire DVD to computer? I prefer a 1:1 digital copy, menus and all.

Edit: Apologize for the missing info. I'm using Windows 11.

How to effectively create torrents

Hi guys,

I am new to data hoarding and so far my collection is mostly video media backups.

My collection is already 4ish TB, but in the future when its larger I am wondering what the most effective way of sharing the library would be.

Some of the torrents im no longer seeding had very few seeders and I would like to be a permanent seeder in the future, space is just an issue right now. I am torrenting on one PC and then transferring to the NAS for an added layer of security, which im not sure is 100 percent necessary.

Any tips or tricks for sharing massive libraries?

Advice needed to expand storage.

I am needing to expand my storage, at the moment I have 6x 16tb 1x18tb 1x22tb in my fractal R5. I have the ASROCK Z690 PG Riptide motherboard with all sata slots filled. I have an ASROCK arc a380 gpu and a Intel X520-T2 10 Gb/s, Gigabit Ethernet PCIe x8 Network Adapter installed. Is there any expansion card for more sata or sas drives I can install considering I have a GPU and Nic card already installed?

SanDisk ditching WDBlack/WD Blue for "Optimus" branding - thoughts?

Just saw SanDisk's CES 2026 announcement that they're retiring the WD\
Black and WD Blue product lines in favor of new "Optimus" branding across their consumer SSD lineup.

On one hand, I get the consolidation - Western Digital owns SanDisk, and having WD_Black, WD Blue, SanDisk Extreme, SanDisk Ultra, etc. has always been a bit confusing.

But "Optimus"? Are they trying to distance themselves from the whole WD brand reputation issues (the SMR debacle, the older reliability concerns)? Or is this just marketing wanting a fresh start with a gaming-focused name?

My concern: WD_Black actually had decent brand recognition among gamers and enthusiasts. Starting over with "Optimus" means throwing away years of mindshare, and it's going to create confusion during the transition period when both old and new branding are on shelves.

What's your take - smart rebrand or unnecessary confusion? Is this SanDisk trying to separate themselves from WD's baggage?

What are we all doing with our Seagate shucked shells? Creative Uses?

For the first time I grabbed a bunch of Seagate drives over the holidays, as have many others here. What is everyone doing with the shucked shells? I usually buy WD and keep the shells in good shape (except the clips) so I can ship off and sell the decommissioned drives the new ones are replacing. The shells give the drive a bit more shipping durability and make it easy for the buyer to validate the disk. These Seagate shells almost require destruction to harvest the drive... is everyone just chucking them in the recycling bin?
