Affordable glassware

Hey everyone, over the last couple weeks I've realized I'm in need of a new organic chem setup. Im not wanting to spend a fortune though as I know its very easy to do so. My previous set up was given to me so I'm not really familiar with what is a good or bad brand. I know chemglass and aceglass as well as corning are all very nice but they are also far from affordable for me. I know amazon is frowned upon for these things usually but I've heard good things about laboy. Any help would be great. For reference, I've been doing chemistry for a few years and do all sorts of experiments, lots of distillations etc... I've just never had to buy new glassware until now.

Is it worth it to continue if I hate it?

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy chemistry. The math is fun and I like learning about how it all works. However, I'm also struggling.

I'm currently at a place in time where I feel like I have zero time to actually dedicate myself to learning what's being taught and I can't stand labs half the time.

I mostly do what needs to be done however it's supposed to be done without actually understanding the why. At least that's how it feels. This is mostly because I have several lab periods in a week for three different classes and barely any time in between to actually study the concepts without worrying about other things.

I find it stressful, but I also find it fun. But I'm not passionate about it. I also love biology, but I'm hesitant on making the switch for fear of experiencing the same issue.

If I'm not passionate about chemistry like my peers, is it even worth it to keep going? Even if it means I'll only end up hating what I'm doing, or worse, being the idiot who makes it past the finish line by an inch?

Interview Prep for Synthetic Chemist

Hi, I’m a bachelors level chemist and have an interview for a Synthetic Research Chemist position coming up. I’m expecting some technical questions and was wondering what I should be prepared to answer? Since it’s an entry level role, I’m not expecting anything super advanced, but I imagine they may ask about general chemistry knowledge, simple synthetic route planning, troubleshooting, and instrumentation. If anyone has some insight as to what questions I should expect, I’d appreciate it. Thanks!

What is a good sealed container to store voc items (IE paints, thinners, coatings, etc)?

So 3 days ago I coated a cool red rolling shelf piece with Everbrite. I wore my 3M mask and the cartridge/filters. Welp I started feeling dizzy and out of it. Still do. Only last night did I notice the newly open cartridges pink/yellow had expired early this year. Ugh.
I took my shelf unit to my 2nd story balcony and put it outside to off gas and to dry on the 2nd night. I’m an idiot. The first night I closed my garage door and opened up all of my windows.

I’m trying to detox what I did to myself now. Damnit I have a festival this weekend.

But it made me think about the damn paint cans that painters/construction people put in my HVAC closet in my garage. Not a good place!!! I’m learning…good lort…I burned brain cells but I’m learning. What is a good deal container to put paint, thinner, etc in my garage. I’m getting it out of the HVAC closet (btw I live in a 4 story townhouse).

Thanks you smart people! Chemistry was one of my favorite classes in college!

Aqua regia reaction with organics? Any other way to break gd-dota?

I need to develop a way to recover gadolinium from urine. I was thinking anion exchange resin to bind it and eluate it at a later date.
Problem is gado-dota is pretty annoying to measure if you dont have advanced equipment.

I want to use arsenazol 3 but i need to find a way to break/digest it first.
Anyone know if aqua regia works? I know it works for inorganics but not sure if it works for organics

Gold testing acid question

Hey there, jeweler here!
I have this small piece of gold that I want to test for purity, I estimate it's between 10k and 12k (24k = 100% purity). Unfortunately I only have access to 14k testing acid, of unknown composition (not sure but probably nitric or sulphuric acid in unknown concentration).

I have this idea of adding 1 drop destilled water to 4 drops 14k testing acid, to lower the acid concentration to one that would dissolve lower karats. My amateur math suggests I would get 11,1k testing acid. Anyone have any experience testing/ refining gold has any idea if this logic follows or if this idea makes any sense?
Thank you in advance

How much chem do you need for Ochem?

I took chem 1 and 2 about 3 years ago and now have to take Ochem 1 and 2. I honestly do not remember much of chem 1 and 2 and am wondering how much of it is actually used in Ochem and what topics I should brush up on?

Fuel Cell Performance Testing

Hi everyone,

I’m a PhD student in Chemistry working on polymer membranes for fuel cells. Out of curiosity, I’d like to know how fuel cell performance testing is usually carried out in research labs.

For example, what kind of setups are typically used to measure voltage–current characteristics, power output, or long-term stability? Are these tests usually done in-house by research groups, or are they more often outsourced to specialized facilities?

I’m just interested in how different labs approach this part of the work.

Thanks!

The failure for thiolated -Aptamer binding onto Gold surface?

I tried immobilizing a thiolated aptamer on aluminum tape on a gold-plated watch, but the peaks I obtained by FTIR don't match those reported in other literature.

Is it necessary to reduce the thiolated aptamer with TCEP before use? Will it be affected if I use TCEP-HCl? Is it necessary to remove the TCEP? Can I directly attach the aptamer to gold?

Does lead react with copper to create an explosive?

Over a decade ago, when I was a kid I was messing around with a soldering gun a some copper tube's. I had a thin walled copper tube about and inch long and maybe a quarter inch in diameter. I crimped one end shut and filled it with lead solder, I believe it may have been flux core soldier, not sure if this is relevant, but after I filled the tube I let it sit for maybe a couple months to a year. One day for whatever reason I decided to heat the copper tube above a gas kithen range and hold it upside to melt the soldier out. After heating it for about ten minutes it exploded so violently that it blew a hole in top of the burner on the stove and landed me in the ER with shrapnel wounds. So do any of you know what may have been the cause, maybe a reaction between the copper and lead created some sort of explosive compound?

Any advice for someone looking to get into computational chemistry?

As the title says, I’m a 3rd year undergrad and quite interested in doing computational chemistry. If anyone here has done/is doing computational chemistry I’d be quite interested to hear what you think about the field and what advice you’d give to someone going into it. Specifically if there’s anything I should try to learn outside of the course!
