dangers of being a communist

to preface this I am mentally ill.

After this year of fucking around reading theory and debating in my social circle, I've decided that all my leftist navel gazing is useless if I don't actually do something about it IRL. My question is if it's actually dangerous (in terms of govt suppression etc...) to publicly be a communist (I live in NSW australia.) Thanks in advance for any insight.

Anyone familiar with Struggle La Lucha/Socialist Unity Party?

I recently stumbled on a website and some discussions about this organization. It appears that they're descended from Workers World in some way, as they have multiple articles about or written by Sam Marcy on their site, so they're in that tradition in some way. But I can't find anything about them online outside of their site. Anyone know what their origins are?

Genuine question from a baby Leftist

If there is no money in a communist society, how will resources be distributed since any officials that help in that distribution can't be paid? They don't necessarily produce anything so I'm just a bit confused there.

thoughts on bernie sanders?

hi friends!

i’m unsure if this has been discussed before, but i am interested in genuine criticisms of bernie sanders politics. he’s obviously very appealing to liberals—even those who might be more left-leaning than they know—but as a social democrat he’s views are still incongruent to communism.

https://twitter.com/internethippo/status/1350100448808632326?s=21 this is the tweet that made me curious.

Really struggle with reading theory.

Hi, for the past year or so I have been trying to engage more with Marxism-Leninism and the amount of reading that goes along with it and I'm not really getting very far.

When I was younger I read a lot, but since my late teens, untreated bipolar 2 and ADHD have been making it a slow-going and nightmarish process. I was on the mental health waiting list for 3 years in the UK until I finally got referred to a counsellor who was mainly just interested in helping me find work and cope with anxiety, so I finally just decided to go on an anti-depressant in 2019, which literally made my attention problems much worse (this hasn't gone away a year and a half later.)

Now for all of 2020 I have spent trying out audiobooks and podcasts and some other alternatives, but if I'm being honest it is very slow going and I sometimes have to listen to the same audiobook 7 or 8 times before I can actually recall even half the information. Unable to get any help on the NHS at all due to the pandemic and was already on a mental health waiting list (it's almost impossible to see a psychiatrist where I live unless you're at high risk of killing yourself.)

I guess I'm looking for any sort of alternative "reading lists", advice, just anything helpful. I get that it's not all about quoting theory, and I do get involved a lot in online discussion, but this is a weakness I would very much like to overcome. Thanks in advance.

Help me find a book

Reading about Erich Honecker I have found that a book was published around 2010 in Italy called “Appunti dal carcere” (meaning notes from prison) in which he talks about the last period of the DDR and how Gorbachev acted.
I can’t find the book anywhere, does anyone have a digital copy? Thanks

USSR and the construction of the Moscow Metro

Greetings Comrades! Today I would like to present to you one of the most significant Soviet Marvels, the Moscow Metro. It was constructed as a palace, with its own monuments and legends, yet it still holds many secrets to this day, with many people still searching for hidden bunkers, secret metro lines, and relics of the past.

'The most revolutionary thing one can do is always to proclaim loudly what is happening.' 102 years ago, on Jan, 15, 1919 German revolutionaries Rosa Luxemburg & Karl Liebknecht were murdered by the proto-Nazi Freikorps.

On this day in 1919, German Revolutionaries Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht were executed on the orders of the traitorous "Social Democratic" German Government.

Do you think the amount of books you read (on Marxism and other ideological ideas) determine your knowledge when discussing/debating these topics?

It feels like books can be summarized really well and there is much more information to be found out outside a book. I think it’s good to have the knowledge of the books in your head but is it necessary?

You cannot be Marxist and non-vegan.

Animals represent the lowest class in society; the sub-proletariat. It is easy to see how Marxist theories can apply to both humans and nonhuman animals.

Animals are enslaved to produce products for our capitalist society. They have no choice in the matter, and they can easily be slaughtered for deviating from the norms expected of them as an animal. They are alienated from their product, just like how the proletariat are alienated from the fruits of labour.

Furthermore, meat itself is inherently a symbol of wealth and the bourgeoise. For centuries, only the upper classes have been able to eat it, and even today it remains a symbol of wealth, Americanism and the Global North in general.

Being vegan is inherently apart of a more communist movement. Thoughts/discussion?

Just a question of curiosity - how many Eastern Europeans are here?

Is there any way to check the statistics? I'm doing a test, a survey on how many people from Eastern Europe want communism back and why.

Live surveys are unavailable, so i'm doing whatever i can. So far the numbers aren't that great.

I'm from Lithuania, a post USSR state. About only 1/20, if not less people want it back

The catch is that they don't want communism - they miss the USSR for the "traditionalist aspect" of it. Deffo not the economic aspects.

Is there a way i can do a survey here? Of course there will be westerners posing as Eastern Europeans, which i find funny as most from Eastern Europe want to move west, but at least it's something.

Where to buy theory books

So I’ve been buying pretty much all my books on theory on Amazon, which feels a little ironic. Would there be any source that I could buy books that is preferable to Amazon? I know there is a bunch for free online, but I am not a huge fan of reading on my phone/laptop. Any help would be appreciated.

Are there any older Russian/ex-Soviet citizens who defiantly call things like cities & monuments by their old names (like calling "St. Petersburg" Leningrad, or "Volgograd" Stalingrad)?

Just a really random thought that came into my head lol. I would imagine after about 3 decades-worth of "de-Russification" and "de-communization" measures that doing this now would turn some heads, but I can't imagine being a person who lived in one of these cities for so long and then the next day being forced to call it by another watered-down name. Though I would like to think there are like some 80 or 90 year-old folks who remember how things really were, and refuse to give up the revolutionary legacies of these names ...

Difficulty understanding the difference between communism as its own thing and socialism as its own thing

Hey Comrades!

Reading State and Revolution it seems pretty clear that socialism is posed by Lenin as a "soft communism" part of the "withering away" of capitalism and the state...

What I have difficulty with is understanding the difference between Socialism as Part of the Road to Communism and Socialism as its Own Thing.

I gather that communal societies go back to ancient history and that socialism predates Marxism, but what I don't understand is how or why socialism can, would, or does stand on its own apart from communism and even possibly apart from Marxism.

Can someone please clarify the difference?

I think another part of the issue is that today many people identify as "Socialist" but mean "Democratic Socialist" in America at least it seems like the "Left" (liberal left) is as confused and mistaken about socialism as the Right (who call anyone not a republican a socialist.)

I’m Trying To Choose Which Party To Join, HELP.

So I am currently struggling to choose what party to join. Could anyone help me out? I am a Houstonian, and a Marxist Leninist, although I don’t endorse dogmatic anti revisionism as some groups that call themselves Marxist Leninist do. I would prefer to join a party that defends previously existing socialism and doesn’t give into the whole “it was just state capitalism” bs. Also, this is crucially important, I WANT THE PARTY I JOIN TO BE BIG. I am not at all interested in joining a small party. I believe firmly that the current array of socialist parties needs to consolidate into far fewer ones in order for effective future action, so I don’t feel like it does much good for me to join a smaller party that I think should not exist. To my knowledge my current choices for these criteria are as follows...

1. Party For Socialism and Liberation (PSL) - I’ve heard a lot of good things, but I don’t like that many people have reported party members as being snobbish to non ML socialists/communists, and I think it’s kind of shady that they do a lot of their activism under non socialist names.
2. Communist Party USA (CPUSA) - Pretty interesting history, the people seem nice, i’ve heard there are a lot of old people though, and for some reason widely hated by everyone. I assume it’s because they endorsed lesser evilism? Honestly as an ML to me I think the future is in the liberation of the global south and the creation of class consciousness, in the mean time america is Fcked, so I don’t see how voting democrats really hurts us in anyway in the mean time. Also given enough political pressure democrats could continue to pass more ranked choice voting legislation, which could allow communists to run campaign to agitate the working class and get them organized.
3. Socialist Revolution (SR) - Seem like they aren’t super big, nice logo, not really sure about much else.
4. Socialist Alternative (SA)- Full of trots, so not exactly my crowd, more keen on reformism it seems, not sure on their position on historical socialism, pretty big so that’s a plus.
5. American Party Of Labour (APOL) - no idea
6. Workers World Party (WWP) - no idea

Which should I choose? Are there any others I should consider? Any help is appreciated.

I think communist should help other left leaning ideologies...for now

I'm gonna give you my unfiltered opinion.I don't believe we can reasonably turn the United states into a communist country,at least not yet. This bums me(an anarcho communist) alot. The US is way too brainwashed from the red scare and other far right ideologies infiltrating the government even before the 2016 election.
My solution? we open people up through social democracy, use this to create more unions and other social nets to help the working/middle class(this will open people up to other leftist ideas).we can also have people like Bernie work within in the system to make life better for a while.
Hopefully this will open up the way for socialism and maybe even communism if we gain enough support to change the system either through law or force.

We might never get to see our dream until after we die,but sometimes you have to pave the road so others can walk on it.
I also know not alot of us want to work with other groups. We need to create a better world and this is what I'm willing to do. I hope you guys can see were I'm coming from.you don't have to stop being communist.just also be socialist/social democrat.
