2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup Preview #1 - New Zealand
Ah well New Zealand, one of the most consistent side in ICC tournaments but they have wow only 2 ICC trophies, none in World Cups. They've kind of under-achieved in the T20 WCs, making it to semis only 4/8 times. They made it in 2007, then waited 9 more years till 2016. They made it to the final in 2021 but lost it 30 minutes before the first ball was bowled and then they made it to the semis again in 2022, smashing Australia in the very first game but didn't have much else of note.
Overall T20I WC Performance: 42 Matches, 23 Wins, 17 Losses, 2 Ties
T20I performance since the last tournament: 36 Matches, 16 Wins, 15 Losses, 2 Ties, 3 No Results
Squad:
They announced their squad on April 29th and in the following table we'll see the performance of each player in their last 20 T20I games
|Player|Runs|Average|Strike Rate|Wickets|Average|Economy|
|:-|:-|:-|:-|:-|:-|:-|
|F Allen|542|27.10|161.79|-|-|-|
|D Conway|475|26.38|120.86|-|-|-|
|K Williamson|684|40.23|122.14|-|-|-|
|D Mitchell|407|23.94|135.21|1|6.00|6.00|

|J Neesham|262|21.83|140.10|13|23.61|9.30|
|M Chapman|289|24.08|138.94|-|-|-|

|L Ferguson|12|2.40|60.00|23|24.91|7.97|
|T Southee|49|12.25|128.94|30|19.00|7.93|
|I Sodhi|38|4.75|84.44|19|24.31|8.01|
*Henry has played only 17 T20Is in his career
From here we can see that the form of most of their batters barring Allen is iffy. Williamson has a high average but sometimes plays slower than required. Chapman's strike rate is good but average is a bit lackluster. Their spinners along with part-timers have done well and the fast bowlers are in decent form too.
Previous WC Stats for the selected players:
|Player [Matches\]|Runs|Average|Strike Rate|Wickets|Average|Economy|

|L Ferguson [5\]|-|-|-|7|22.71|8.36|

|I Sodhi [17\]|9|9.00|100.00|25|17.76|7.04|
Barring Mitchell & GP, their batters have sub-par stats for T20I World Cups. Their bowling looks well coiled with only Ferguson being kind of expensive. Bracewell, Ravindra & Henry will be participating in their first T20I World Cup.
Strengths:
Their spinners look well coiled and they've got options there as well. Santner will be economical, Sodhi is a good wicket-taker. Phillips or Ravindra (if they play him) could tune in with some overs too. Their fast bowlers look well oiled too. Southee has been hit or miss in recent times but they'll hope Henry can transfer his form across formats into T20Is too.
Weaknesses:
Well their batters in the middle doesn't have a high strike rate, but they can afford that since their opener [Allen\] up top has usually been explosive and their bowlers are capable of defending a par or even somewhat sub-par total. But even Allen gets out a bit early way too often and then it's usually been up to their middle order to both consolidate and keep up the pressure. Conway's form is also somewhat of a worry, in both 2022 T20I WC and 2023 CWC he started well but then fell off badly. The skipper will be an interesting watch too, but the slow pitches of the Caribbean should help him with his natural game.
World Cup Chances:
Their group stage is a relatively straight-forward one. They've got West Indies, Afghanistan, PNG & Uganda. Losing to PNG or Uganda could be the upset of the century and though Afghanistan has been

KKR won by 7 wickets (with 21 balls remaining)
Varun Chakravarthy, Player of the Match: It (the pitch) was holding a bit and you could see as the game progressed, it was turning more. (On the Rishabh Pant wicket and his match-up) The first ball, when the catch was dropped, I think that was a better ball. The ball that got him out, might have gone for six on any other ground. Cricket has become a game of fine margins. The Stubbs one (was my favourite). (On what happens in conversations between him and Narine) Silence (laughs). Mostly when something does not go well for me, he is always there. After conceding so many runs in the last game, it was a tough pill. Everyone, including Abhishek Nayar and Shahrukh Khan spoke to me and that was nice. (On him asking to spare a thought for the cheerleaders) Unfortunately that has become the trend and maybe they should dance only for the sixes and not for fours (laughs).
Shreyas Iyer, Kolkata Knight Riders captain: (On if he thought the pitch will play this way) Not at all, considering the last few matches. After the powerplay, the ball started spinning a bit, was helping the spinners and was tacky. Happy that we bowled first, we got an idea on how it was playing. (On having a chat with the openers beforehand) Sunny, not at all. Phil, he coms into the team meetings and he is completely engrossed into the game. Pure bliss to see the way he is performing. He (Narine) does not (attend team meetings), and I would recommend him to not come as well (smiles). He (Chakravarthy) was not at his best in the last few games. But today, coming in and delivering under pressure, that is what we demand. The way he turned up today was simply brilliant. We have been thinking about it (qualification) from match one, that has been our mindset. Just focussing on our work ethics and our performance.
Rishabh Pant, Delhi Capitals captain: (On his decision at the toss) I think that (batting first) was a good option but as a batting unit, we did not bat well enough. 150 was definitely below par. That is part and parcel of cricket. We have a long break ahead, where we can learn from our mistakes. Sometimes, it is just not your day. The way we were going, it was pretty nice. You cannot get away every time in T20 cricket. We were 40-50 runs short. (On the ideal target) I think anything between 180-210 would have been a good target. There was a lot of help for the bowlers but as a batting unit, we did not give them enough.
Phil Salt: Good to be contributing. We have had a good run of home games, nice to have that continuity of conditions. Had to bounce back from a tough last game. Pleased to see the bowlers put in that sort of performance, really pleased for them. (On his attacking approach) It is high-risk but it is also about putting the odds in your favour and not taking the risks you don't want to. You just have to keep backing yourself and keep taking the right options. Very helpful to keep on it first and see what it is doing. So, when you come out, you have a fairly good idea of how the surface is playing. (On his conversations with Narine) Off field, we have a laugh. On the field, not a lot. We usually do the talking a day before. He

rising, New Zealand will more than back themselves to beat them. Their squad looks stronger than Windies and since there hasn't been much of a home advantage for T20I World Cups, you won't think of WI as favorites just because they're hosting. Barring some calamity, New Zealand should make it to the Super 8s.
In the Super 8s their most likely opponents will be India, Australia & Sri Lanka. They'll back themselves against Sri Lanka. Despite being in trouble early on in 2022, they beat Sri Lanka by a good margin in the end. Problem arises with Australia & India. We know how poorly New Zealand performs against Australia and India in ICC tournaments, though in T20I WCs they've got respectable (or rather more than respectable) stats against both of them. Nobody will be surprised if New Zealand make it to another semi-final of an ICC tournament, but there's a real chance that their streak of 4 consecutive semis in ICC LOI events could be coming towards an end.
Conclusion:
Can New Zealand finally win a World Cup of any format? Perhaps not, perhaps yes. When the XI players come on to the field, you can be damn sure their performance will be better than the sum of their parts. But this time, even making it to the semis will be a challenge. But the same thing was said in 2023 CWC, heck even 2022 T20I WC but they managed to get to the semis both times. At the end of the day, it's frickin' T20 cricket and predicting the unpredictable game is a futile endeavor. But I sure hope they go far deep in to the tournament and perhaps even win the much coveted ICC trophy with their current crops of player, which will change drastically by the time 2026 or more likely, 2028 rolls on.
