Books recommendations about a journey

I just finished Brigands & Breadknives by Travis Baldree and absolutely loved it! It made me realize that I really like books that focus on a journey. Especially when there is almost a day-by-day descriptions of events. Not a lot of "a week later...". More of "the next day..." if that makes any sense at all. I would like to read more books like that. It doesn't have to be only fantasy, sci fi is alright as well. Although I really like the fantasy world Baldree has built in this series with so many fantasy races mingling together.

Other examples that is kind of like this are Kings of the Wyld and Bloody Rose by Nicholas Eames as well as The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman. And of course Lord of the Rings also fit in this category.

Looking forward to hearing some recommendations from you guys!

Recommend a Series Where the Law/Guards are actually a threat and not just background noise.

A lot of fantasy plots ignore the law because usually far more important things are happening like fighting a God or overthrowing an empire you know casual fantasy things and the guards are faceless mobs that get endlessly slaughtered by the powerful protagonist.

I would like to a read a series where the Law and Guards are actually considered and are a threat, I want to read a series where a good/bad guy gets taken down because he didn't pay his taxes or something like that, protagonists don't mess the guards because doing so would lockdown the city and they are stuck etc etc.

Don't recommend Discworld Guards, Guards, already on that series.

Is there a book where the main character' power is Super Mathematics?

I mean not just good but on the level of a super-computer that extends far beyond simple accounting but giving them other skills related to math like:

Super marksmanship by instantly doing physic equations in their head to calculate the perfect angle of fire.
Calculate running speed and terrain geometry to formulate a perfect escape route.
Use statistics and odds probability to make minor future predictions.
etc.

I've seen certain side characters with this power in some books but never the main character.

Looking for Fantasy recommendations for a Sc-fi enthusiast!

Looking for something that’ll pull me in and won’t let me go!

I read and love, love, loved the Hierarchy series (Will of the Many, Strength of the Few) recently, it gripped me and I loved the ancient feeling, but technologically advanced society and has a “magic” system of a sort. It inspired me to jump more into fantasy.

Other things I’ve read:

Blood Over Bright Haven which I liked well enough. I liked things not being what they seemed and a determined, gifted MC.

The Red Queen, which was okay, I liked the premise (oppressed masses rising against a powerful overlord), but I’m probably going to DNF book 2 due to the writing and it’s putting me in a slump.

The Broken Earth trilogy, really liked the world and “mystery”

I also really like Red Rising. And the last series that grabbed me this year besides the Hierarchy was Dungeon Crawler Carl.

Generally I’m a fan of the sci-fi, mystery, thriller, horror genres.

Somewhat lighthearted adventure books

Fantasy novels seem to be dominated by seriousness and dreariness. At least the most popular/commonly recommended stuff. ASoIaF, First Law, Stormlight, Mistborn, WoT, etc. Feels like everything that's not super dark or serious is either full on comedy like Discworld, or cozy fantasy(Which are great). Where's stuff with a balances both fun and high stakes intensity? I feels much more common in fantasy stuff within other mediums.

How are the works of Anthony Ryan?

Like probably many others on here, I was enthralled by Blood Song back when it was first self-published but felt that Tower Lord and Queen of Fire didn't manage to capture the same magic, and the author kind of fell off my radar after that.

Now, however, I see he has a lot more works out, including two more books in the same universe as Blood Song.

How are his later works? Did the author ever manage to find his stride again?

Help with a (non-romantasy) fantasy book rec for a 19 year old girl?

Hi all!

I’m in charge of finding some recommendations for a 19 year old fantasy fan for a Christmas gift! Her current favorite books are Scott Hawkins’ The Library of Mount Char, and The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman.

She enjoys fantasy, mystery, and thrillers, and is not particularly interested in the ACOTAR end of things. Any help would be much appreciated!

Fantasy recs for a lapsed reader

Hello fantasy lovers!

I’m hoping for some recommendations for more recent fantasy. I used to read the genre all the time when I was younger, but over time I ran out of steam and couldn’t find stuff that captured me in the same way.

In recent years I’ve mostly been reading literary fiction, so I’m coming back to fantasy with a bit of that mindset and I’m hoping to find books where the writing feels mature.

Authors/series I remember enjoying:
- A Song of Ice and Fire (I was obsessed with this series - not the tv series to be clear)
- Tolkien
- Ursula le Guin
- Patrick Rothfuss
- Garth Nix
- Trudi Canavan
- Alison Croggon
- Raymond E Feist
- Terry Pratchett
- Some Brandon Sanderson stuff. Was kinda hit or miss for me.
- Harry Potter (my entry point to the genre like many others)

I can’t remember all the books I tried that put me off the genre, but I think I bounced off something by Sarah J Maas. Possibly Throne of Glass since it’s on my Goodreads as a 1 star.

I’m open to different tones and styles, I just want to find some modern fantasy that feels like it’s really high quality at the sentence level as well as the story level, and expand my reading.

Thanks in advance!

Book suggestions for a person new to reading and interested in Fantasy?

My sister wants a book for Christmas and she doesn't read a lot of books. I think she'd love fantasy books, but I'd want to give her something not too complicated, long or slow paced. A bit of romance is okay but I don't want to give a book with sex scenes. Does anyone have any suggestions? Or is this an impossible ask? haha

I have been trying to figure out what the difference between these two sub-genres is. Any amazing prose moments?

Have you ever been reading a book, and then you happen upon such an amazing, evocative paragraph of prose that you just have to sit back in awe?

I'm currently reading The Spear Cuts Through Water, and man, the first paragraph really impressed me...

>

>you remember your lola, smoking. You remember the smell of her dried tobacco, like hay after a storm. The soft crinkle of the rolling paper. The zip of the matchstick, which she’d sometimes strike against the lizard-rough skin of her leg, to impress you. You remember the ritual of it. Her mouth was too dry to lick the paper shut so she had you do it, the twiggy pieces of tobacco sticking to your tongue like bugs’ legs as you wetted the edges. She told you it was an exchange. Your spit for her stories. Tales of the Old Country; of ruined kingdoms and tragic betrayals and old trees that drank the blood of foxes foolish enough to sleep amongst their sharp roots; any tale that could be told in the span of one quickly burning cigarette. “It was all so very different back then,” she’d begin, and you’d watch the paper curl and burn between her fingers as she described the one hundred wolves who hunted the runaway sun, and the mighty sword Jidero, so thin it could cut open the space between seconds. Her words forever married to the musk of her cigarette and her bone-rattling laughter; so much so that whenever you think of that place, long ago and far away, you cannot help but think of smoke, and death.

Book recommendation with a vivid world, characters and interactions!

I would love a book series that really excels at immersing the reader in a vivid world and characters. Sometimes, I feel like I am just told that a character is smart or kind, rather than the book putting effort into making me feel a part of the world. A book that allows the reader to understand the world and characters for themselves.

I have very much enjoyed Realm of the elderlings, and Kingkiller Chronicles! They both hit the nail on the head for me, both from a story perspective(a good mystery and fascinating magic system is always a winner), but also in regards to how I felt a part of the world they created! I also loved the Hierarchy series, but did not get this level of "immersion". I often see Sanderson recommended, but I have not been able to get into his books, unfortunately!

I would love any suggestions!

Characters moving to the new place, separated from outside world, living there and discover its secrets.

Im looking for a book where as in title, characters for some reason are moving to the new place, they live their everyday life there and explore this new place, discover its secrets, etc, etc.

Genre doesn't matter that much.

It is important that the book is engaging and addictive :D

Action for example may take place in some mystery castle, research station, space ship, small town, etc, etc.

To better illustrate what I mean, Harry Potter may be good example here, cause everyone know this book. And it gave this kind of feeling, cause characters moved to Hogwart and they explored its secrets and riddles.

Any ideas? :>

Starting a book club with my husband and need standalone ideas…

This is a club for the two of us so we can get our nerd on. We both love sci-fi/fantasy and have read a lot of the genre. He leans towards huge fantasy series like WoT and Sanderson, and I lean towards space operas and fantasy romance, although he likes those too.

I’d love some out of the box standalone suggestions in the 300-500 pg range so that we can read something together while also having time to read our other series. Can be new or an older classic that isn’t often recommended.

Books/authors we’ve both enjoyed: Clarke, Douglas Adams, Weir, Scalzi, Martha Wells, cs Lewis, Tolkien, Expanse series, some Tchaikovsky, T Kingfisher, Fourth Wing (that was purely a hate read), Pratchett, Red Rising… he’s reading some Abercrombie right now. We both love Dungeon Crawler Carl. Hope that helps?

Throw it at me. Thanks!

Edit: some great suggestions so far, thanks! I’m also looking for creative ways to package and implement this so I can give it “boxed” as a Christmas gift. We’ll read the e books, but if you have thoughts about creative presentation or monthly “meetings” I’m all ears! I thought I’d choose and compile maybe the top 20 - 30 I find and let him pick, or we can alternate month to month..

The Mighty Nein (Critical Role's new animated series) has been fantastic so far, especially the latest episode.

I'm probably biased because I've been a Critical Role fan for a long time, but they really knocked it out of the park with The Mighty Nein. It's much more character-focused than The Legend of Vox Machina, and the longer episodes really make a difference.

Episode 5 was easily the best episode they've done, I highly recommend it! Even my fiance, who normally dislikes animated shows and fantasy, is loving it so far.

*A comment with 14 upvotes just said "The Ancestor Trilogy". I am 95% sure this is the series they meant, but I could be mistaken.

My comments:

\-The idea for this came to me because this subreddit famously has a general dislike for romantasy, so I thought it would be fun to figure out what types of romance users here actually like.

\-The sample size is small, especially outside the top 5, so please keep that in mind.

\-I've only read 3 series on this list. Kushiel's Universe definitely deserves to be near the top of the list. I wouldn't call the romance in Scholomance one of my favorites, but I definitely see how someone could, given its unique approach. I've only read The Curse of Chalion from WOTFG, and while I loved it, it's not the romances that make this book great in my opinion. That may change in the next books, though, as I think the romance in Bujold's space opera The Vorkosigan Saga is elite.

\-The top 3 were recommended in almost every post. I think it would be fair to call Bujold, Kingfisher, and Carey the big 3 of fantasy romance. 2 of them are my 2 favorite female authors, which means that I must read something from Kingfisher soon. If you have any suggestions on the best starting place in her bibliography for a fan of dark fantasy (Cook, Abercrombie, Zelazny), please tell me.

\-Several authors appear a couple of times, more often than on any other lists I've done. Shut out especially to T. Kingfisher and Ilona Andrews with 3 appearances each.

\-It is a big surprise for me to see Jim Butcher as the highest-ranked male author on this list. To put it nicely, romance is not the priority in The Dresden Files. It certainly puts Codex Alera higher on my radar.

\-Somewhat unsurprisingly, the list is dominated by female authors. Only 5 men feature, and most of them are very popular, while some books written by women on this list could definitely be considered hidden gems.

Final reminder: This list is NOT MY OPINION, please be respectful. The last time I did a post like this, it got comment locked, which is a shame. Instead of criticizing the list, I urge everyone to recommend a book that should have made it.

Thanks for

YA fantasy for 11 yr old

I’m looking for suggestions that would be good for a sixth grader that doesn’t have anything graphic. He loves Percy Jackson. He’s an avid reader so length shouldn’t be a determining factor. I’m finding some YA novels aren’t necessarily good for a pre-teens because of their graphic romance so I could use some help in my search.

D&D-like fantasy, for adults?

i used to love reading the Forgotten Realms books (and the odd Dragonlance) back in middle and early high school. i'm a huge sucker for the classic fantasy elements (elves, dwarves, wizards, magic, medieval/renaissance-era technology) and the heroic, adventurous ethos.

i got back into it lately when i beat Baldur's Gate III. it scratched an itch i almost forgot i had; a world that's frightening and gritty, as well as hopeful and clearly moral. there's a certain amount of wonder and mystery present there that i adore. i like the strong focus on believable characters, without turning them into Whedonesque quip factories. it was also nice to have queer characters constantly and casually in the foreground.

eager to dive in again, i cracked open some of my old R.A. Salvatore books the other day... only to find that i've definitely outgrown them. they're excruciatingly YA, and not in a good way. my tastes tend more toward Tad Williams and Ursula Le Guin these days, but there's still something missing in their otherwise lush work, for me at least.

i'm not looking for "the good FR books;" i'm sure they exist, but i'm interested in more mature works with a similar vibe. somewhere in the middle along the spectrum of grimdark to "cozy" fantasy, if that makes sense.

thanks for reading!

Honestly, I loved the idea of magical gunslingers for a long time. I can't quite recall where I first found out about the series, think it was an article or list. The best book I've read all year and my new favorite book of all time.

My favorite book of the year and my new favorite book ever made is Steven Erikson's The Crippled God. Without diving into spoilers, I'd just like to say that this book, to me, is perfection personified. Throughout the countless genres I have dove into and the plethora of authors I have tried, there always seems to be a paragraph, chapter, character, etc., that I may not like very much. Which is okay; things aren't meant to be perfect, but this book proved to me perfection exists inside of a book. It ends off the biggest fantasy series written with a bang. I highly recommend reading this series and giving it a try.
